Yea, some of these players committed to Strong. They loved that guy. So much that they couldn't beat Kansas to save his job. Some of these players committed to Herman. He also inherited the disgruntled Strong players. Then came pandemic, social upheaval and players threatening to not play if things didn't change on campus. Hermans handling of this, as much as mediocre seasons, led to his firing. Enter Sark, who has yet to really recruit a class yet beyond Worthy. He inherits what's left of Strongs disgruntled class and Hermans radicalized class. This locker room had plenty of fractures before Sark got here. I do agree with you that the OU loss seemed to be a gut puch that has stuck with them. Yet they have shown up and played hard in their losing efforts. We are at a point where it is going to take a number of recruiting classes to get back to where we want to be. I suspect it will be at least two.
Bravo guys. Two great, sensible posts that are all too uncommon here. Whatever the issues we face are...they arent as simple and straightforward as the knee-jerk pigeonholing most of us try to do. There are many factors and many nuances and countless cause and effects in play and to hash through would take not lines, not posts, not paragraphs, but pages probably. Just isn't popular these days to take long deep, rational looks and apply deep critical analysis.. especially not on fan forums. Games can go sideways...a call..a play....a sequence...so can morale, so can leadership, so can mentality, focus, so can a team, and so a season. Things are rarely as good as they seem when you go 10-2 and things are rarely as bad as they seem when you are 4-7 (or 2-7). There's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip...and seasons are one and lost by most teams - save a handful each year- by moments..one leading to the next. We just have too many issues right below the surface to withstand many of these at all and it can go south in a hurry. In a word...we are soft...for many reasons. We have to build a team that can withstand the little nuances of competition and weather the inevitable storms without imploding.
And unfortunately that doesn't happen overnight - it takes time. And for Texas fans, that means we need to show some patience - and patience is a trait that most of us lack.
Yep. I know it isnt popular around here..but everyone from the fans, to leadership, to coaches, and players must accept who and where we are -quit pretending and trying to jump there overnight thinking it is easy cuz "We're Texas" like we arent what we are- before we can work to be something different and better.
Yet they have shown up and (except for the Arkansas game) played hard at times in their losing efforts. I fixed it for you. If they played hard they would have won the last two games. If they would have played hard and smart (coaches included) Arkansas would have been the only loss.
A game or a player can turn a program around. One could argue that Ricky did that in 1998. My point being that we don’t necessarily have to wait 2-3 years — and have fabulous recruiting — to make a quantum leap. Someone on another board speculated that had we won in Dallas, we might have run the table and finished at 11-1. Sure, there’s no guarantee that had we beaten OU, we would have run the table. But psyches are fragile and momentum is a real thing. So had we beaten OU, this team would’ve believed, and belief is a very powerful thing. (After all, they now probably believe that they somehow will lose Friday, and they have probably believed that they were going to lose for the last several games.) My point is that obviously right now we are in a deep rut. But it doesn’t have to take years to get out. A big and unexpected win, or an unexpected breakout player, can make a tremendous difference. Our first opportunity to have a momentum changing game will be Alabama in Austin next September. Now I’m not saying that we will win that game or that we have a good shot. What I am saying is that if we were to win a game like that, look out. The decade of mediocrity could then be over in one Saturday.
The lack of patience should be with that nebulous, ether that is Texas Football. Who or what is in charge? How long has it been since we fired Mack? That's a pretty long time and what we have in front of us (Alabama will probably handle us the way Gonzaga handled our basketball team) is a potential beat-down of epic proportions which will poison the season and the spirit that we so desperately need. I hope I'm wrong.
Texas fans are often fans of winning. When that doesn’t happen many become adept at pointing fingers and demanding answers and heads to lop off. My favorite coach got his head severed because he lost two shots at national championships but we didn’t get close again for 15 years I say be patient
I have to say, I grew tired 45 seconds in of his use of some word that sounds like "alright" but comes out "aight". Very annoying. Aight?
Channeling his inner McConaughey? BTW, I am more than willing to look past any speech shortcomings of a HC that can win 13-15 games/year at Texas.
Well he's got several national championships and playoff berths to back him up. He has every right to complain about Bama's fanbase. They are the reason he almost ended up here and it sounds like he's fed up with them again. If he weren't so close to retirement I could see him bolting to somewhere else just to prove he's the best ever....again.
