Amina gets the ball off the tip and scores less than 3 seconds into the game. Jordana with a quick steal.

Amina with an offensive rebound and putback. Fouled on the next possession, 1/2 - she has the first 5 points for DeSoto.

Kind of shocked Cori Allen did not start for Montverde.

5:53 left in the 2nd quarter. DS 8, Montverde 15. Too many missed layups for DS (not Amina).

After getting down 8-10 for a lot of the first 2 quarters, DeSoto makes a run to end the half.

    Montverde 25, DS 21.

Just in case I forget to mention it later - Amina can flat out pass the ball.

We have the best recruit in this game in Muhammed. So fast, hustles, and athletic. Rebounds, handles, scores under basket well.

Agree 100%. Barker may be Top 5 - she has a really nice shot - but she’s usually the last player across half court and doesn’t play half as hard as Amina.

    DeSoto wins, 51-46.

I’ll post some thoughts when I get home.

Thanks @DFW_Horn and @NBhornfan for your in-game reporting on the matchup between DHS and Monteverde. There were a lot of great athletes on the court tonight so it’s impressive that Amina stood out.

    1. I’m still trying to figure out how Jamia Harris was named player of the game. She made some big shots late but Amina played every second except a minute or 2 after her 4th foul late in the game and finished with 16 points (team high) and 14 rebounds (game high).
    2. Thoughts on Amina:
      • she runs like a deer, often the first player down the court on both offense and defense
      • A slightly slimmer frame than I expected but she isn’t afraid to mix it up down low, got several rebounds just by wanting it more than anyone else and going after it
      • Biggest surprise to me? She can really handle the ball. She is fluid dribbling the ball unlike a lot of high school power forwards and made some great passes to find open teammates. She did fire one a bit too hard on a fast break late in the game but I can’t recall her making a bad decision on where the ball should go.
      • I honestly believe she can guard 2-4 in college ball - long arms, quick feet and plays with controlled aggressiveness.
    3. Sa’Myah Smith is really good on defense. Even longer than Amina and with good instincts when it comes to blocking shots - I’d estimate she had at least 6 tonight. Needs to work on her offense, missed a few layups and finished with 9 points and 9 boards.
    4. Jordana had a rather unremarkable offensive game, missed badly on a couple of 3-pt attempts but got involved late. When DeSoto was in man defense, Amina was often defending her. Her defense was pretty good with a few steals and pass deflections plus a block shot on Amina but I am sure she wasn’t happy with her overall performance tonight.
    5. Janiah Barker has a very smooth shot for a PF but her effort tonight left a lot to be desired - running at half speed or asking the ref for a call resulted in her being the last player from either team down the court quite a bit (actually gave me flashbacks of a recent Longhorn).
    6. I saw Vic engage with a few coaches/people courtside during halftime but April Phillips was like the mayor down there - usually surrounded by at least 3-4 people including other coaches and at least 1 prominent EYBL program organizer. Immediately after the game, Vic and April spent considerable time speaking with the DeSoto coaching staff.

Great observations. Did Cori Allen ever get any playing time? Was Barker the best player for Montverde last night?

It’s been a long time since we have had an assistant coach with the connections and charisma as Coach AP. I’m impressed that Vic was able to hire her away from Arizona.

Close played quite a bit but did not start. Barker was Montverde’s go to scorer - has range BYA and a good rebounder but the DeSoto bigs made her work harder than she is probably used to inside the paint. On a side note - I saw Herron a couple of years ago at the Texas@TCU game - I don’t know if she’s been injured but her ‘conditioning’ is not where it was then.

In the DMNews, the game only had a couple of paragraphs.....no box score. The article mentioned A.M. being leading scorer and rebounder for DeSoto.

The position versatility and length of the incoming class are what I like the most.

Well, we'll have to start tracking social media to see which point guard(s) are getting interest from Texas. Might be that it ends up being an upperclassman transfer PG who perhaps wants to come to grad school at Texas and is okay with any role she plays as long as she's able to contribute.

An experienced grade transfer might be the best option as someone who can come off the bench to steer the ship in order to give Rori a breather or if Rori gets into foul trouble. Not all players who enter the portal make a public declaration of their intent to transfer. Some players who enter the portal will do so privately, without any fanfare. They may initiate contact with schools to determine if there is reciprocal interest.

From looking at social media for clues about future point guard prospects, I don't detect any 2023 PGs who our coaches are actively following. Up until Ashley's departure, a 2023 PG (likely) wasn't a top priority.

For 2024, Jaloni Cambridge is a 5'6" PG from Tennessee who is rated as the #2 recruit in the nation by ESPN Hoopgurlz. Cambridge is followed by Coach AP, Coach McEntire and Coach Dee on IG and Twitter. Our coaches have liked recent posts by Jaloni so she seems to be on our radar. Jaloni only follows Coach McEntire on IG.

For 2025, to no one's surprise, Aaliyah Chavez, the 5-9 PG from Lubbock is on our coaches' social media radar. Chavez also follows our coaches. Although it's early, Chavez is currently listed as a top 5 recruit on ESPN Hoopgurlz.

With Rori getting national acclaim, Texas should be a great candidate for the top PGs in the country. Vic is picky so it will be interesting to see who he targets going forward.

From an independent view, I think Schaefer’s DNA has 3 parts that always surface. A dominant, quick, scoring point guard,…….pressure D…….and an aircraft carrier center. I think he has the first two in place. Still needs the last. To consolidate his wins on points 1 and 2…..he needs a serviceable quick, backup point guard. Right now it needs to be a transfer. In a year or two, it can be the NEXT great point guard from high school. I’m thinking a upperclassman transfer will show up soon.

I have zero insight. It just seems illogical that he’ll let that gap be there long. And regardless of other current options, it is a big gap. If the right transfer shows up, it could be “soon”. And I can’t define “right” or “soon” or “eligibility”. That’s above my pay grade. My job is to offer fair and biased opinions to Schaefer……and to critique after the fact decisions. And I get paid correctly for what’s that’s worth.

Based on our 2023 Recruiting thread, our staff extended scholarship offers several months ago to PG Reniyah Kelly out of Alabama, and PG Hannah Hidalgo out of New Jersey. Kelly has since verbally committed to North Carolina.

I think our staff was looking at signing a 2023 PG as more of a luxury rather than as a necessity; that outlook probably changes now that Chevalier has moved on.
