Totally agree, WorsterMan. The first time I went to Palmdale for business, it took 3 hours 30 minutes to fly from DFW to LAX - and another 3 hours to drive to Palmdale.
I learned quickly that it was much easier to fly into Burbank - it didn't make the freeway traffic any easier, just mean less freeway to get to Palmdale.

When I lived in Laguna Beach there were 3 or 4 USC staffers and professors within a 3 block radius. None seemed to be over worked.

    4 decommits after the news
Five-star QB and No. 3 prospect Malachi Nelson among Oklahoma decommits following Lincoln Riley's move to USC
Five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson, the No. 3-ranked prospect in the ESPN Junior 300 for the class of 2023, decommitted from Oklahoma on Sunday night, one of four commitments the Sooners lost in the hours following the news that Lincoln Riley had accepted the head-coaching job at USC.

Nelson, from Los Alamitos High School in California, committed to Oklahoma in July but wrote on Twitter that he was decommitting "in light of the recent events and changes."

"One of the things that attracted me most to OU, other than the rich history and amazing fans, was the stability in the coaching staff and their ability to develop the QB position," Nelson wrote.

Also decommitting on Sunday was class of 2022 linebacker Kobie McKinzie, and ESPN Jr. 300 receiver Brandon Inniss and running back Treyaun Webb, both of the 2023 class.

This weakens OU in every way. And has the potential to be very good for us.[/QUOTE]

Sounds a little “Aggie” to me.

    LH,

My personal experience is that the worst anywhere is the 405 from the Orange County line up to the Getty Museum - 24/7 bumper to bumper SLOW.

I have frequently taken Lincoln from LAX up to Venice on way to The People's Republic of Santa Monica. I have basically quit flying into greater LA.

While I appreciate the elevated competition level of the new league week in and week out, I don't like ditching traditional state and regional rivals.

Sure does. My closest comparisons to LA would be Atlanta (on a bad day) and DC.

The move makes some sense. He gets to rebuild a moribund program in his own image, so to speak. Stoops had made OU a perennial power. Riley did a great job continuing it, but probably wants to prove he can do it on his own. I have no idea what, if any, shadow Stoops continued to have over the program.
And finally, Riley's star most likely would dim in the SEC to some degree. USC is the big fish in the Pac 12 pond. Recruiting has become national. But I suspect he'll get first choice over a ton of California talent, while also using his Texas pipeline to attract some from here. It's a gamble on his part. But I see the attraction.

USC, when they're decent or better, utterly dominates California recruiting. Most years, California recruiting runs 2nd or 3rd with Florida, behind only Texas. His athletes will be a large step up from the competition. He'll also have his choice of plenty of top QBs to choose from. The competition out there has been weakened in recent years, with Oregon the top dog to compete with USC.

Unless he was OU for life, it makes good sense.

Riley made a good move, he will recruit top players, start winning at USC and if he wants to go to the pros the door will be open.

You think that gives OU the best chance of continued domination over Texas, do you, POS?
Luke will be winning conference titles in the new B12. Not so in the SEC coaching ou.

If it is true that Riley is going to USC because he is scared of being in the SEC, then he's a wuss who should be given no accolades if he wins at USC and by default makes the playoffs.

Sounds like he's a titty baby running off from the big bad SEC!SEC!SEC!

OU has had good luck plugging in assistant coaches: Stoops, Switzer, and Riley. I imagine they’ll continue doing that. Hopefully they’re due to pick a clunker. Riley came with the Bob Stoops seal of approval and that helped him make a smooth transition.

@Pomspoms, why do you disagree with this? Aren't coaches and athletes normally praised for taking on difficult challenges, not running off to the easiest path to victory?

I think this is a smart move by Riley. Word is he was irritated to not be involved in the decision making to go to the SEC. I can't imagine that he's excited about that level of competition combined with living in sourthern california, only having to compete in the Pac-12, etc.

I think he handled this poorly. He left under the effective cover of darkness with multiple coaches and likely a few top recruits. This has to be something done after you meet with your players to tell them face to face if you're going to be forthright about it. I think he tries to encourage Caleb to stay but I don't know. I think Caleb is such a team guy who's ingrained into Norman that he stays but I'm naive and a glass half full guy. Rattler is "peace out girl scout". I figure ASU or some other Pac 12 school. Heck, he might be a good fit for USC. He's more of a drop back 7v7 guy.

That said, we've all seen some screwy things in the last month or so from Riley. They literally pooped the bed in Waco. I figure he made the decision during the bye week before that. His attention to special teams was questionable (see the OSU game - negative 14 points in a 4 point game). And, to be a top coach/recruiter we should have more than 1.5 RB's and a better OL given what we have had in the last decade. I'll trust Castiglione to make a good hire.

    You are making assumptions.
I don't know his reasons. Scared, i doubt it.
He is going to make good money at USC.
MAYBE his wife is super excited about living in california
Maybe he is tired of Oklahoma and wants new scenery.
    Your negative assumptions disgruntled me.
But you have a right to them.

If you're ultra wealthy certain areas in CA can be really nice. Although nothing close to the USC campus. If I were ultra wealthy I'd certainly consider Saratoga or around Lake Tahoe.

I didn't make assumptions. I read comments from pundits and posters suggesting he was taking an easier path to The Playoffs, and that if those suggestions were true I made my comments saying that makes him a wuss and titty baby.

I stand by that, which gruntles me.

Now, if he just hates Norman and thinks LA will be better, well, hell, who can blame him for that?

I doubt we will ever know but as a springboard to bigger things (NFL) LA will give him a lot of exposure. USC fans understand and follow football, in my opinion, more so than UCLA or other west coast teams. If you are not the head coach of OU, Norman is an acquired taste. FWIW, I personally like the east side of the state.
I have several friends in California, they seem to like it but college football is not the reason. The traffic and taxes are BRUTAL but HS football is a big deal.

I listened to a podcast yesterday when I was staining the deck. Sanchez was being interviewed from a while back. He was talking about potential coaches at SC and how he had some big time culture shock after leaving southern california. He said their fans were much more laid back. Combine that with an easier league. Make sense.
