Why, back in my day...

Yeah, I'm old. I've started yelling at neighbor kids for crossing my lawn. I'm wearing my pants up close to my nipples now. I'm buying analgesic creams and stuff to stop itches. Laugh all you want. But you know what? I never had to worry about my favorite three Longhorns leaving. Tommy Nobis, Chris Gilbert, and Darrell Royal weren't ever going anywhere.

But yeah, I can see my Horns on any one of several stations now. I can listen to them on Sirius/XM. I can read about them ad nauseam on the internet. I don't have to wait on my parents to take me on a yearly pilgrimage to the Co-op to buy a burnt orange t-shirt, I can walk in Academy or Walmart to do that now.

I still have hope every year for my Horns, even today. But all of this ou, USC, LSU, Florida, etc news today just reminds me that football isn't as much fun as it used to be...

    Meh...
I don't listen to much outside noise.
I enjoy the crap out of college football, especially the Horns. (of course)
Coaches and players come and go.
Politics, social upheaval, money, money, money doesn't bother me.
I just want to be able to watch the game every weekend.

    I've got to ask ....

I am a man that takes pride in his lawn. I resodded with zoysia last summer and have painstakingly gotten it near golf course quality over the last 18 months.

Why can't people walk on the lawn? I understand when it has rained and you don't want it to turn into mud. But otherwise I am confused.

Just trying to prepare for my early on-set old man syndrome.

It is fun when you win. Period. I don’t like the attitudes, tatts, hair, showboating, but I’ve learned to overlook it for the sake of winning. Some players have to do things to get a mental edge.
Hell Vince listened to Rap music and so did Mack.

Why? Because it's MY lawn. And I'm getting kinda cranky due to all the itchyness...

I hear ya. I know it’s all just change and what I grew to expect from college football was different from what the previous generations grew to expect so I should know nothing lasts forever.

But Multi-million $ coach salaries, transfer portal, mega conferences, NIT deals, it all feels like it’s going to crap.

Perhaps I would feel differently if the Horns were on top. It feels like all this change is coming at a terrible time for us when we are not able to capitalize on it while other teams are.

How do you like that zoysia? I have been thinking of over seeding with that.

Wasn’t there something reported about a Texas position group ‘sharing’ the NIL pot or some such thing? Seems like it was the WR group but I could be just wishful thinking.

    It is going to crap.

The game that all of us are talking about, the one that we grew up loving, it’s dying and no one is going to put the genie back in the bottle now. Too much money. Too much ego. Honestly these kids are given far more credit and attention than they deserve.

They were supposed to be student athletes loyal to a school that they chose over many others. They were supposed to be loyal to the University they committed to and pursue their education and athletic goals with education being foremost. Only a fraction make it to the NFL and regardless of what level you play at you’re just one ACL, chop block, collision, or freak accident from working 9-5 with rest of the world.

Athletic pursuits are so brief and fading.

Too much is made of the sport and these kids.

College football is a cutthroat and honorless semi pro farming organization at this point. Call it for what it is and take the word ‘college’ out. It would at least have more meaning.

TCU had Sonny Dykes land in a helicopter at their stadium. Think about that for a sec..

A&M had Sumlin land at HS games in a helicopter. Helped recruiting but not his coaching.

@SabreHorn you would probably tell me that my observations are the way that it has always been it just wasn’t as transparent as it is now.

let me ask you something though… do you think it meant more back in the day ….
When a kid would just hear that a big name coach was maybe, probably, in the stands to scout them that night. The butterflies…that extra step in pancaking that lone safety that was the difference between him and the end zone.

I just wonder if things were better when it was based upon effort and determination versus swag and visibility. These kids are treated like they’ve accomplished something before they have.

I can remember taking my young son to Tully Stadium to see Beaumont Hebert play Waco ??? It was a cool night, and I wore a Burnt Orange windbreaker with TEXAS in white across the back. (Same windbreaker that Jenna McEachern wore during the 1984 OU monsoon.) As soon as the Hebert parents saw us sitting up near the top, we were surrounded by the blue & gold with rapid fire questions about players and who I was there to see. Word spread rapidly down to the field that "TEXAS IS HERE".

"Icebox" had a great game, played NT and fullback. Unfortunately he stopped in Highland Park on his way to the NFL.

Then there is the night Fred & I went to Charlie Dyer & Delmar Stadiums to watch four HISD teams. One had a great athlete, but after Fred talked to the team before kickoff, he had a miserable first half. WE walked across the parking lot to Delmar thinking this kid was a waste of time. He popped for nearly 300 yards in the second half. Wound up playing for the Giants.

Not sure us being there ever mattered, but the Aggie "Swagcopter" was a big hit.
