Could/would OU players portal to USC?

When a coach moves to a new program, it's not uncommon for recruits to follow him there. In the portal era, could/would active players do the same?

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time in the portal era that a coach has moved from one bigtime program to another, so it's a situation we haven't seen yet.

It wouldn't shock me. I think Stoops is trying to rah-rah and blunt the turnover.

I suspect Caleb will be making his way to LA soon. The question is...how many will go with him?

In the era of the portal, one could rebuild an entire team in a season or two.

As I just opined in the other thread, when Mack took the Texas job he encouraged NC commits to honor their commitments. I doubt Riley has such an ethical compass.

Appears Riley has gone full douchebag. Schools are going to have to start adding non-competes in their contracts. Wonder if NLI contracts already have verbiage in there where if you leave the school, you have to pay back the money?

Surprised it hasn't happened already. This would definitely be a good tool to at least make it more costly for a coach to jump ship. Although you could argue it's unfair for the guys he recruited to not be able to switch and go to the new school, since they were sold on playing for that coach.

The issue with the non-competes is they are hard to enforce and soon will be uniformly not legal.

Mack didn’t have an ethical compass when his panties were in a wad over his firing. This is just such bs.

Riley should do whatever he thinks is best for himself at this point. The players do. Mack’s ego did it for him. With the transfer portal and NIL and everything else there’s no honor left in college football.

Show me someone who believes in a ‘fair’ fight and I will show you someone who is about to get their *** kicked. I doubt I will be caring about college football much longer.

Well, we just disagree. To me it is not cool to leave a school that did nothing but allow you to build your reputation, AND, then to subsequently devastate that program by — if he does it — pursue their commits and also welcome any of their portaled players.

    One word: Classless

Not to defend Linc, but he has a point that the new president and Castiglione made a decision, which directly impacts his job and performance without ever consulting with him or including him in the discussions. He has a point on that, then there is the money.

I saw Mack Brown‘s departure and thought the exact same word. Different scenario but similar all the same. Texas didn’t provide Mack the platform & resources to build his legacy? Lack of integrity or ethics re: your former employer.

So we will agree to disagree on this one this time my friend :hookem:

Hope y’all had a good Thanksgiving

As much as I don’t like OU, this was a BS move.
    1- against the players
    2- against the university
    3- against the recruits
    4 possibly his assistant coaches-

Just because you have the right to do something, doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

And…. I kinda get his point on leaving.

So I am happy and mad at the same time.

Sap, I was comparing Mack’s departure and his behavior when leaving NC for Texas. That move is similar to the move Riley is making. Riley is handling his move quite differently.

I would not defend Mack’s behavior when he was dismissed by Texas. His behavior at that time was classless, and he intentionally attempted to damage the program based on what I believe to be true.

I agree. My thing is he should have let them know sooner. I don’t buy their story that it happened overnight. Coaches indicate if was a noticeable change after the bye week prior to Baylor.

He also should not take any OU players on the roster. He should just flat out say “as a matter of principle, I will not accept any of you as transfers”. Commits is still sketchy but not as bad.

No problem with any of this. Riley is doing what is best for him and his family. Commits rethinking their plans to attend OU are thinking about what's best for them. Ditto for players who want to transfer. OU was caught by surprise and that's unfortunate for them but that's the nature of the coaching business these days. Coaches can't say, "yeah' I'm open to other jobs" or they'd get tarred and feathered.

His point was that you used Mack as a shining example and it turned out he threw the Texas program into the dumpster fire as he left. I don't give a rats *** what he did at UNC. He screwed us royally when he left.

I never have bought the “best for my family” story once ones income is north of double digit millions.
They don’t do it for their families. Pride, angry with staff, burned out maybe- but not so their family can have a better life financially.

I agree with your post. Given the realities of the CFB world, coaches, players and institutions have to be nimble.

To state the obvious, these coaches are egomaniacs who almost always care about themselves first, last and always. Their families? Bull Corn.

To be clear, I have no issue with Riley leaving OU or Kelly leaving ND. It’s all about how it was handled. From what I can tell so far, Riley took the low road and screwed a program that put him on the map. “Thanks OU. Now go F yourself.”

These coaches are expected to be leaders of men. Role models. Examples. Few if any are. (Sark might be one.) All they seem
to care about is who has the biggest salary, best guarantee, and most perks. (“Basically, mine is bigger than yours.”)

Apparently these self-serving jerks and their families would struggle surviving on $5,000,000/year. Poor souls. They must have $10,000,000.

When will someone show some backbone, set an example, and say enough is enough? Does such a man exist in the current landscape? Sadly, probably not.

But no one would begrudge Campbell for taking a different job. He was a hotter commodity last year and has hurt his "stock" by delaying. The thing people have issue with is the "how". And to be a little fair to these guys the new recruiting deadline has changed our world.

Not to derail the thread, but did we ever figure out why Stoops abruptly retired in June 2017?

Makes Sarks move and grabbing a couple assistants after the fact...which some frowned on...look completely and totally unremarkable.

My take is he was tired of recruiting and wanted to play golf and enjoy his time watching his kids do college. He had also had some minor health scares that some his age do when they're performing high stress jobs. At the same time he saw Riley as his heir apparent and he was being mentioned for bigger and bigger jobs and didn't want to lose him for the program. So, he stepped down when he did to set up the program. I think that's why he's taken such a leadership role now. He feels like maybe he didn't make the right choice at that time. He set up LR and the program has slowly gone downhill since.

I have wondered if Riley was no more than a reasonably competent manager of what Bob built. He hasn't had any experience building a program himself. If this is true, USC is going to be in for a rude awakening when they discover wonder boy was just a hyped up placeholder in Norman.
