InsideTexas is reporting that Ashley has entered the Portal but I haven’t been able to confirm that yet.

Well, the timing is awful when you lose your backup (true) PG midway through the season, and no other true backup PG on the roster.

If she had issues with Vic's demanding coaching style, she'd have left after last season. Perhaps it's all about having lost the starting PG battle to an incoming freshmen. Based on the COVID "redshirt" season, Ashley is technically a freshman eligibility-wise. So, in a sense, we had two PG's for the class of 2022; we know that never works with QB's in football; one always ends up transferring, and sometimes sooner rather than later when they realize staying put means being a backup for the next 3-4 seasons.

It's gonna be tough bringing in another PG who can accept being Rori's backup for the next 2-3 seasons. Hopefully, Vic goes international to bring someone in for next season.

Vic started Joanne in the atm game instead of Rori (and Ashley). Ashley logged two minutes

Now it makes sense of the JAT start. Vic may have known Chevalier was considering transfer portal. Or not. Or Chevalier seeing little time in the big games may have told her all she needed to know. Regardless of timing….For sure I am disappointed if this is true.

I'm not surprised. Just surprised it happening mid-season. But, she's not the first.

While something could have changed (personally), I don't think it's about being home sick or wanting to be closer to home. If that were the case, she would have transferred after this past season.

I can definitely understand her wanting more playing time, and wanting to be the starter. I'm assuming she has played her last game at Texas; but, I guess she could finish out the December schedule. Slim chance she returns in January. Don't think she can be eligible at a new school in January, but waivers happen all the time these days.

If true, this puts our season at risk. Bueckers is out 6-8 weeks for UCONN and it puts their season at high risk. Matharu and Taylor can play a little there but are not true point guards. Harmon sure needs to stay healthy and our 3 injured players need to get back to lessen the overall load on Harmon. You can’t manage the risk well as Bueckers was injured at end of game in a low risk scenario. Again….sure hope Schaefer can convince Chevalier to stay.

These days, if you're jumping into the portal before the end of the year, you kinda have a good idea where you would be welcome. Unless it's "I can't take this staff any more". Celeste knew she was going and so did Vic, but stuck it out. Really thought Ashley was a great PG#2. But maybe she wants to be PG#1 elsewhere? Surprising since both her parts are coaches.

Definitely don't blame kids for wanting better opportunities for themselves.

But, it does teach you that what people say and do are sometimes two different things. Ashley and Celeste were two who very vocally and prominently remained committed after the coaching change. I'm not saying that locks them in for life, but it's just a reminder that talk is cheap and everyone pays.

I see your point. It proves that things can change at any minute.

Ashley seemed all in (based on social media) after her first season at Texas, and looking towards her second season. She probably had every intention of competing (and winning) the PG position over Rori. Obviously, that didn't happen. Vic has talked a lot about Rori being "special" way before the first exhibition game of the season; her not having won the starting PG job from day one would have been a surprise.

I'm sure Ashley had confidence in her abilities, but as the season has gotten underway, it's obvious to everyone that Rori is not relinquishing the starting PG job at Texas for the next several years.

Chevalier is a really good point guard as a backup on a really good team like Texas that has top 10 aspirations or higher. She can be a really nice starting point guard on a lot of other teams. I imagine some Cali team would love to have her. Close to home and playing time. We’ll good for her. I imagine most if not all of us would do the same.

Did Vic ever confirm why Rori didn’t start at A&M?

Timing seems like this was the last straw.

I felt this was coming. Once I saw Joanne start at point guard I knew something was going on. Vic was getting a look on how Joanne would do and she didn’t do bad at all. Ashley’s on court presence just seemed a bit different this season. You could see it on her face but it sucks to lose your backup point guard in the middle of the season. I don’t think it puts our season at risk but we need to keep Rori healthy. Best of luck to Ashley:hookem:

When asked in his post game presser he just said…..coaches decision.

He said in his post game press conference that it was just a “coaches decision” and he thought Joanne did a great job with her time at pg. He did hesitate a bit when asked the question

Of course, you would hate to use Aliyah as a PG backup since she is so valuable at shooting guard, but she has shown well there in limited minutes.

I was never as high on Ashley as others have been. I'm just happy we did not need to rely on her as a starter. But losing her as a backup, yes, that stings.

Fortunately, the portal is a two-way street and this development changes the texture of our 2022 needs.

This leaves Shay as the sole remaining underclassman KA recruit. I believe Shay is more emotionally invested in Texas as a Texan than you could reasonably expect Ashley to be.

Our recent past agonizing and in-depth analysis and gnashing of teeth regarding lack of scholarships seems non-efficient use of our time. It always works out that there will be openings….although sometimes you don’t get to pick where. We always felt that there would be 3-4 or more per year. I focused on bigs. Now it’s bigs and point guard.

I sensed this was coming but hoped Ashley would finish out this season before making a change. I bet she and her mother had a heart-to-heart when she was here and her mother likely confirmed to her that her future at Texas was as PG2. I wish her luck and success wherever she goes. I wish another Kyra Lambert would appear at Vic’s door.

Gonna be a catch-22. Hard to sell a highly coveted recruit OR transfer to come to Austin as a PG when Rori is so damn good. It'll be interesting!

If JAT is now the backup point guard, minutes snd rotation will have to be adjusted. I don’t think JAT should play 36 minutes a game at the two. Harmon appears to have some fouling potential so is it just a quick switch and move of JAT when Harmon gets two quick fouls early in first quarter? Perhaps so. I’ll have to rethink this now. Just as perhaps Schaefer was doing in starting JAT at point in Aggy game.

Wasn't JAT forced to play point a couple times during KA's tenure due to injuries to Sutton? I remember she said it wasn't her favorite thing to do, but she did it.

Yes. JAT did play point some for KA. And you are correct that JAT confirmed she was a shooting guard early on when asked. I seem to remember that Schaefer recruited her at MST as a point guard. She can do it, but it doesn’t appear natural. I also seem to remember she played two in high school. However, she is the only real candidate for backup point. The others would be emergency fill-ins.

Well no thank you to Vic and his staff and some statements made in this makes me think there was some disconnect between the two. Not even going to speculate but, we have a special team and they are doing special things right now so best of luck to Ashley but it’s next man up:hookem:

As far as the pg situation goes, we still have Kyndall Hunter who could be used as the backup for Rori. Kyndall did play a lot of pg in high school so she could definitely be a great option once she gets healthy but it’s clear Rori will get most of the minutes so Kyndall can play the 2 because we need her shooting and the 1 when Rori needs a break.

I find it interesting she mentioned coach KA and her staff but no mention of Vic and his….I wonder if there is “bad blood.” She’s obviously unhappy and I truly wish her the best. Just my observation.

Yeah, reading that closer it was pretty obvious she's not a fan of the current staff. The part about mental health bothered me. Not for her saying but her implying that the current staff is affecting her negatively. But, we don't know what practice is like, so....

Already scrubbed from the online roster? Not sending each other Christmas cards, that's for sure. And yes, she's gone.

Having to replace the backup point guard in the middle of the the season is not good. I don’t have a problem with the transfer, I just wished she had done it at the end of last year. The timing also isn’t good because the only other guard on the team besides Joanne and Aliyah with some experience of playing PG is injured in Kyndall. And putting them at the PG position could take away from their much needed scoring. This team is going to need some improved luck to keep important players healthy and also get injured players back.
