That is the bright side of this….. any OU players that transfer to anywhere is good.
You let the Sooners slip next year and maybe another year and the trend will flip.
Those Okies are going to go nuts and these native Texas knuckleheads who love OU- will start wearing GA or Aggie gear. ( your kids go there?, I’m not talking about you)
Unless, as I predict- Aggie is 100% sold on them finally winning a natty- 3 years from now when they have won 7- 8 games a year- and this class has a 30-40% portal rate… they will go back to the Aggies of the 70s. Lose against ranked teams, and win a big game every year or so.
Texas will be Aggies game to win every year. Sad for them. And I truly mean that. To care only about one game? Really weird stuff.

To me this is a very poor reflection on Riley. Sure, he can coach wherever he wants. But to knowingly decimate his former employer — where he developed his reputation — is classless.

Yes, I am saying that he should discourage those players from joining him. Very bad optics.

Whatever, its the wild west in the NCAA. Dont be offended by anything that happens. Coaches can leave, players can leave and there's absolutely nothing anyone can do about that. Adapt or die until the useless NCAA figures out how to handle this mess. If they don't there will eventually be a huge destruction and rebuild of the entire collegiate system.

Yes this does put Riley in a bad light. However this is a dog eat dog business in a dog eat dog world.
A big time coach has to do what a big time coach has to do. Who cares about ethics.

I know this is the usual banter against the Aggies but
I predict the Aggies to be very formidable, perhaps winning a natty in 2 or 3 years.

Well, I do, and I always will. And any Texas HC who fails to exhibit ethical behavior will lose my support. That’s what separates our program from…Aggies.

    :idk:

I guess i meant in a situation like this.
I am a real believer in ethics in general.
So if you were in Riley's place you would tell your former players something like this, "you committed to Oklahoma not to your coaches so stay there?"

Pompoms, yes, I actually would. Or at least I would tell Williams that it would not be appropriate for him to come to USC. I believe that Riley owes that to OU.

Riley is selling his reputation for a potential short term gain. If Karma is a real thing, he will regret it.

After more thought i think the NCAA should make it a rule that after a head coach who quits his current position and goes somewhere else as a head coach he should not be allowed to bring his players with him. At least not for the first season. Then the players can portal out to his team in the following years if they want. This will help the former team to not be so decimated so quickly. Also it will give time for the current players to like or not like the new coach coming in. Of course they can portal to a different team if they choose as is the normal case. But we need some kind of stabilizing rules.
However, if a school fires the head coach then all bets are off, players can follow their coach immediately if they so desire. But i think that has been the case.
I am just wondering how much more money did USC off Riley to be their head coach and did OK try to match. Maybe i missed this info.

But most players do commit to their coach.
Or the position coach that recruited them.
    The school is usually secondary.

I think how and why a coach leaves a school matters. If a coach gets fired and escorted out, then lands another job, I think all bets are off. If he steals recruits and existing players want to follow, then neither party would have showed much continued loyalty. However, if a coach on top leaves a school for more money (say $110MM), then I think it is pretty bad form to poach the existing player ranks, or the ranks of committed recruits and leave your still loyal employer even more in the lurch. Leave for more money if you must, but why screw over your employer further while doing it? Loss of a coach and staff is major upheaval, but when players start transferring out en masse and recruit decommitments become the story line, it harms the school and team immeasurably. I don’t know why you would have any to do that to people who love and care about you, and who is anted you to stay.

"Don't choose a school because of a coach because chances are he won't be there as long as you are" - OA Phillips when recruiting Steve Worster to go to UH instead of Texas. True to his word, Bum wasn't at Third Ward another 24 months.

True for those not chasing an NFL career.
But the high calibre athlete is looking for the coach that will develope him.
Of course the school that gives him the most visibility comes into play.

Back to the portal, I’ve heard crickets re Sanders, Mathis & Williams (WR). Don’t they have to enroll Tuesday if they’re coming to Texas?

If you mean Mario Williams he is committed to USC.

Right now the stars (and their families) are committing to the money. A highly ranked player out of high school that stalled out as a freshman can regain that luster in the transfer portal AND negotiate the NIL as if they had rocked their freshman year on the field.

Once again, it's selling your potential and you get a reprieve in this golden era (which will surely be regulated further in the future as everyone learns from the human nature impact of the current rules) by transferring so there will be much testing of the waters.

The only loyal people are the fans and the skill-set of the coaches/BMD's has taken on added importance: negotiating the $$$. But we love KD even though he was a one and done right? It's year to year and Burnt Orange is what you should focus on, not who's wearing it.

My take - given low % of college players that make the NFL, those that have been with their schools are looking to make some $$$ while they can and the while the NIL and their eligibility windows are open. Once in a lifetime for the majority of these players to make some considerable money, so why not?

BTW - aggy butt hurt over the accusations that they’re buying talent in this morning’s paper. Saying it’s a slap in the face of jumbo’s recruiting prowess and not because aggy and angst-ridden BMDs are buying recruits. Interesting how they’re back to the high road after the LLC paperwork & signatures are dry. Great recruiting class, but let’s call a spade a spade - bought and paid for. Legally, but bought and paid for.

To me Sanders would have been a much more significant get. We need immediate impact difference makers on defense.
