The 1981 Longhorn roster (not team) which included Mike Ruether is listed as the second-best roster in the history of Longhorn sports. Thirty-seven players played at least one season in the NFL. Wow -that is a shame. He had the widest shoulders of anyone I can ever recall.

They were a necessity to support that beer keg chest he had. I remember Dana introducing him as the only player he had ever worked with that was thicker from middle of the chest to middle of his back than he was from side to side.

One of that great group that could bench 500+.

Someone that knows better please correct me, but I thought he was the one that stopped Bryan Mallard from throwing the TV out of the Lubbock hotel window when the station was televising Tech's Friday night pep rally.

When my daughter was about 2-3, we played Rice at Rice Stadium. She wanted the players to autograph her program. Ruether picked her up with one hand and handed her over to Mallard (also one hand) to sign her program & then took her back.

Thanks for the memories big guy and tell Fred & Danny "Hello" for us.
