Hmmmmmm... Better add to that job description: "Watch games from the press box, develop and present adjustments to the head coach, coordinators, and team at halftime."
HIC, Speaking about jobs, I see that your airline will start flying to Houston in May. If you have a layover maybe Sabre, you and me can have dinner.
Great idea. If he flies into Hobby, we can hit Floyd's on 45. If it's IAH, we can eat wherever the National Guard has the most people. (Either Humble or Woodlands)
Isn't that the head coaches job? All these assistants to assistants to assistants are just bloated useless overhead. We consistently lose a lot of games with way too many people on payroll. I mean, I'm not paying for it, but why waste the money? If we wanted Patterson then we fire coach K and make Patterson the assistant head coach in charge of defense or something.
Are our defensive coaches coachable? I still fear the "too many Chiefs" syndrome. Just like most Bills that go through Congress. By the time they go through all the committees and become law they are either worthless or do more harm than good.
Patterson does not want to be on the road recruiting. He does not want to deal with other aspects of the job of defensive coordinator, or "assistant head coach in charge of defense" as you called it. He doesn't want 18 hour workdays all year long. He wants to do more than just a traditional analyst, and said he wants to do for Sark what Dick Tomey did for Mack Brown. So that means *if we want his help* we create a position that doesn't actively recruit, but may advise on kids to pursue (or not pursue). We create a position that advises, self scouts, and does a lot of what Jerry Kill did for Patterson at TCU. We let him enjoy a well paid, semi-retirement role, and we take advantage of his wealth of knowledge and experience without asking him to go beyond what he is willing to do. Or, we fire coach K, try to force the DC role on Patterson and watch him walk away too.
Patterson has knowledge and connections in Texas football circles that is uniquely his. I am fine w Coach K. He has and deserves my support. But Patterson is a unique opportunity to make our football knowledge more better. Funny thing is that Patterson would never have left TCU for the head coach job in Austin. TCU just gave us an unattainable gift horse.
I can see how an offensive guru at head coach would want to learn from how a defensive guru and head coach manages game plans, defensive strategies, and performance improvement. so maybe coach K is at risk, but mostly I think this is helping Sark learn how to be the head coach in a way that improves the defense WITH COACH K.
I hope you are right and agree with your assertion. However, I am sure we all know that this situation has CDC's finger prints all over it. My guess is the true motivation lies there.
