I’m ready to hear thoughts on how to play Iowa State. I don’t have any good ideas that I would represent to Schaefer. Ashley Joens is a nightmare matchup. After watching Vivian Gray of Tech (similar to Joens) work over her defensive matchups……and remembering the good games Joens has had against Horns……I’m not expecting a lot of success stopping her. Also it appears that ALL the Iowa State players can score the three ball. LSU did beat them by about 6 or 7 but it was close. I’m interested in how Schaefer plays D. Expecting a tough zone against horns. Thoughts?

Obviously there's a clash of styles. I think it comes down to whomever executes theirs the best. If both teams are playing really well, it could come down to the team that has the last possession. If we don't play well it won't be pretty.

Not expecting a repeat of our 70-59 victory in Ames on 1/23/21, especially since the attendance at that Covid-impacted game was only 1026.

How many ISU fans will risk attending Wednesday? If it's less than 3000, that has to be tough for a team accustomed to playing in front of 3X that.

If a 16-1, 5-0 record doesn't get the Horns dialed in, nothing will.

Edit: I see they had 11K+ fans attending vs Iowa and 9K+ vs WVA. Probably 10K+ vs Texas. We can only hope the Horns will absorb some of that energy, if those numbers reflect butts-in-seats vs ticket sales.

Fun Fact: Texas beat ISU 3 times last year.

We tend to do well against teams that rely on the three.

We also tend to play well against highly ranked teams. I know we lost to the Vols, but we weren't overmatched.

One of the main style features of Schaefer teams is deny in bounds after made baskets. Early on this season…..terrific. As the season has gone on, some good coaches háve implemented strategies that have negated some of the effectiveness. For example, running the baseline ….or passing the ball to a teammate crossing the baseline out of bounds…and parallel to the baseline….then the ball is reversed back to the original player who has crossed into fair territory. Simple but effective. Another tactic is once successfully inbounded, the ball is given to a big who has a good handle…..then everyone clears and the big brings the ball down the court unimpeaded. Best example was Vivian Gray of Tech. She is a tremendous ball handling big. WV did some of that as well. Ashley Joens can do the same. I will be watching to see how Fennelly implements his press breaker.

will this game be on TV anywhere? I've got choir rehearsal and if I can only listen, I'll miss most of it.

I think Texas will be fine.Iowa St. tend to not handle pressure well.If we keep them of that 3 point line, like we normally do.And bring the game we had against W.Virginia. We will win.

The offensive game plan we utilized against West Virginia isn't going to work against ISU unless Fennelly gifts us a victory by playing man to man defense. I'm a little surprised with all the basketball minds on this board no one recognizes a big part of Saturday night's success was the fact we weren't running offense against a zone defense. Our defense was more dialed in for sure but we weren't struggling on offense like we did against Tech and Kansas because we weren't facing a zone.

What Fennelly has in store for Texas will in all likelihood not be a man to man defense. He’s famous for his “junk defense” that is usually some form of zone tailored specifically for the opponent.
Anybody hear Vic say he had a zone in his back pocket against WVU but didn’t need to use it? Or was that to keep a future opponent guessing ? Lol

I didn't want to take the wind out of our sails after that much needed win over WVU. But I did expect us to perform much better going into that game for the very fact that they strictly play man-to-man defense. That defensive strategy plays right into our hands in what we try to do offensively.

So, how do we beat the zone? Kyndall and Audrey shooting 3's? And maybe Joanne? Can we use AMoore and Deyona against Joens? I truly don't understand how you attack a zone, other than shooting well from the outside.

You need post touches against a zone defense, even if it doesn't result in an offensive move by the post player. Working the ball inside out gets the defenders in the zone to move and shift out of place creating scoring opportunities from different places on the floor. Another effective way to attack a zone defense with post play is with some high/low action. Baseline action, overloading one side, or attacking the seams of the zone off the bounce can also be effective.
That said, matchup zones can be particularly difficult to attack because they are harder to read by the offensive player. The defender is up close enough so that there's no good clear- cut open look, but the defenders are backed off just far enough to make dribble penetration more challenging also.
Bottom line... It takes more patience and execution to be effective against a zone.

Flashing a big or wing to the elbows or free throw line middle are helpful most times. Or short corner during overload to one side is good. Lots depends on whether it’s a 1-2-2 or 1-3-1 or 2-3. The one I liked best to use is match-up and hated to play against also. There are holes in all zones but it takes movement and good passing and patience to find those holes. Zones are notorious for poor rebounding. Fennelly is tremendous using the correct one against the opponent.

Yep. Which is why I think Iowa State wins. We all know that Fennelly is going to run a zone. He's run zone practically every time he's played against Texas teams, until /unless he was absolutely forced to play man to man. And Vic's Texas teams have obviously struggled against any kind of zone. Hopefully Vic has done a better job of coaching and preparing the team to play against zone. And hopefully Kendall gets some playing time because they can't just rely on Matharu being the only option from the perimeter.

I’m thinking……yes being dangerous again…..that Iowa State should be the favorite. Who we got to cover Joens? Zone, away game, 16-1 and 5-0, three point shooters, passionate fans, biased referees, snow, etc. Horns propensity to sometimes not be able to throw it in the ocean….but can to the defense. Lots of reasons to be negative. ON THE POSITIVE side, the Horns are a tough matchup for anybody. I’m “thinking” the Horns just might sneak away with a win tomorrow night. Just like KState did tonight to the Horns men. That’s why I’ve got my hot chocolate ready, anticipating sticking my feet in the fireplace, watching my 85” HGTV and yelling at the refs on a 37 degree/21 mph windy chilly evening in Dallas. Schaefer vs Fennelly…..can’t find much better BB strategists than that. That’s the cat’s meow for a Wednesday night of Horns basketball. Hook ‘Em Ladies

Don't see it. And unlike with Beard, Fennelly can actually coach.

And Iowa State plays Baylor Sunday. The standings “could” really be jumbled up soon.

I'm not disappointed. I think Iowa State still have plenty of fire power. Suddenly being at a disadvantage could be a spark for lesser-known players. Our team needs to beware and don't let their guard down.

ISU played zone against us last year and we beat them three times. In Karen’s last or second to last season we swept them also if I’m not mistaken. We have had lots of recent success against the cyclones. They always seem to struggle against us. Although, they are deeper and better than the last few seasons. I don’t think you can pencil in a loss for us, as you always seem to do, quite yet. It could go either way.

ISU will play inspired tonight. They are still very capable and they're still at home in front of 10k fans

Recent success is true. The 2 conference games were by about 15 each. The conference tournament game was a tremendous game….a 2 point win…..I believe it was OT…. on a neutral court. Regardless of score the games are competitive and fun to watch because of different styles of play.

I’ve seen teams play really inspired minus their best player(s). Look no further than Mizzou’s recent upset win over South Carolina with 7 scholarship players (I think) and missing their leading scorer and rebounder.
Would I prefer to play them without the Joens sisters? Yes, but it sure changes the scouting report on very short notice (post shoot around I’m assuming).

So I agree that the absence of the Joens sisters doesn't mean a cakewalk for us. It is, though, disappointing that we won't be facing their full team. If we win, there will be the "what ifs". If we lose... Covid s*cks!
