    Happy BD # 28

An incredible, insperational person and great football player.

Read his book: I Play to Win shortly after it was released in 1971.

This thread caused me to pull the book off my shelf to read / skim again this weekend.....

It gives me a special feeling just thinking about Freddie.

    What numbers are retired?

    10. 20, 28, 34 & 60 (honorarily used)? Any others?

No, I think your keen mind on UT football got 'em all.

Only second thought was #22 Bobby Layne.... but don't think his # was ever officially retired.

    Actually, here's the list:
    • 10
    • 12
    • 20
    • 22
    • 34
    • 60
If anyone is added I think is ought to be 16 and 28.

You know, while they hadn't retired 28, the scoreboard was always for him which was fabulous. Now with all the updates on the SEZ I'm not sure if there's anything left for Freddie, and I would think retiring his number would be a great substitute.

Those with more knowledge and/or money than me who spend time down there may know of something symbolic that has taken the scoreboard's place, but even with that there's nothing the general fans can see. Those same people may have the inroads and ability to start a conversation with the appropriate folks in Belmont...

Unless recently removed, Freddie's plaque & photo are still there for the players to touch with "Hook Em" on the way out to the field.
