A lot could be said about this.
For one...people should listen to him.
The other relevant issue here to me is with all the portalling opportunities, guys who want to be "the man" will not be patient very often. The pressure for coaches to appease these egos and their desire to play so as not to lose them will be enormous...will make Mack's situation with the Simmseses's look like childs play.
And another factor is the fans. It isnt just players mentalities changing these days...It is fans, also. I see it even on HF.
The days of grooming a talented QB who may yet very well need a little more time are dwindling. Everyone makes quick...and often rash...determinations of what they believe should happen and what and when to conclude X about each guy ...and sometimes wisdom goes out the door right behind patience.

Truth is no one here or anywhere knows at this very moment which of the 3-4 QBs should be expected to start next Fall...ALL things considered for the ultimate greater/greatest good.

I do not know Quinn nor to what degree he and his situation will fit my take here...but we as fans should be cautious in drawing hasty conclusions about whats what and who's who and what should or shouldn't happen with these guys coming in or that are already here.

He is possibly the best high school coach I've ever seen and I've actually thought similarly about Ewers since he got here. And he coached against Ewers in the state championship game two years ago so he has direct experience developing a defensive game plan to stop Ewers. That defense also made Ewers look pretty pedestrian in that game.

However, he failed miserably in college going 6-37 as the North Texas head coach so maybe he doesn't know exactly how to handle talent at the college level. I think I'll leave it up to our current coaching staff to make that decision.

I don't think Todd's record at UNT reflects as much on his ability as the nature of the school.
What he is saying does reflect on his experience coaching HS athletes and their general ability to transition to big time college

I think Sark will play whoever gives him the best opportunity to win.
That being said, if there's no real separation between Card, Ewers and Murphy, but Ewers has all the upside, then maybe you start him and let him take his lumps.
I can't imagine Card can't beat Ewers out same as he did Casey in spring and summer.
He's been in the system awhile now and lights seemed to be coming on at the end of last season.
Ewers hasn't played a game since his junior year in high school.
But perhaps Ewers is that guy that steps on the 40 acres and just takes over.
Or Maalik says screw all you guys and out performs everybody. :)

    i agree with you.

i think Dodge's comments should more affect BON's expectations more than Sark's decisions. Even if he gets the start, maybe don't expect Heisman quality performances.

Todd is an outstanding coach and a great offensive mind. Todd is not a recruiter, and while I've likely known him longer than anyone on this board, he is a different personality. His personality, coupled with the kids he could get interested in NTSU resulted in his W/L record.

Face it, Darrell Dickey was one of a kind in Denton, and the dumbass AD that fired him while he was having open heart surgery deserved every bad thing coming his way, including the immediate visit from "the mattress king".

While philosophy Dodge is right, it’s all about circumstances and context. In other words, do we “really” have a choice?

OK, Card looks great in workouts and is exhibiting leadership qualities. That and $1.80 will get you a Tall coffee at Starbucks. I watched Card last year. Outside of a miraculous turnaround, he is not the answer. And sure, I’ll be happy to be wrong.

If Casey was still here he should start. But unless Murphy is light years ahead of where most predict, do we really have the luxury of waiting to play Ewers? I don’t think so.

You might be surprised how much of a difference it makes to go from year one to year two as a high school kid transitions to college. I'm not saying he's going to "get it" but I'm not going to rule him out next fall because he struggled last year. He flashed some solid QB play in short/rare occasions so he has it in him. We'll see what happens.

Sad but the portal potential is a definite factor in these decisions.

Card was damn near as high a recruit as Ewers.
He still has a lot of upside.
Ewers may come in and take charge and that would be awesome.
But I'm not writing off Card for next season yet.

I don’t want to belabor the point, but we could play 2 QB’s at once if we switched to the 10 yard minimum offense. Given that Card once played WR in HS, seems like we have the personnel to run it.

While I would agree, with most QBs you can quickly and clearly see the potential. Assessing the “it factor” can take more time. Maybe.

With Vince and Colt it was obvious, almost immediately. Sam was magic, but perhaps a lesser version of Farve — a gunslinger that had magic but also made a ton of poor decisions. Sam was a miracle waiting to happen, but also a game losing turnover on the verge. That was until his junior year.

As an aside, Sam’s coaching staff inexplicably failed to recognize that he was concussed on many occasions. Oddly, you could see it — immediately — from the sideline or on the television, but Tom and his staff were simply oblivious. Perhaps on purpose. Talk about a horrible disservice to the young man.

Sam’s legacy was cemented standing on the field after the OU game. That will live as an iconic image. But, I digress.

I don’t dislike Card but frankly I saw nothing in his performance last year outside of perhaps a handful of plays to give me any confidence.

His nervousness in the pocket was palpable. He has no clock in his head. His inability to see the field is troubling. His occasional turnover meltdowns were also a problem. And, he missed more than a few long passes that would have gone for touchdowns. (Sure, so did CT, but he was dealing with a major thump injury.)

If Card ends up being a great quarterback at Texas, I’ll be thrilled, and happy to eat my words. But to me, that’s a huge longshot. My biggest issue, again, is his obvious lack of comfort in the pocket. Sure, the line sucked, but I didn’t see that level discomfort in Casey Thompson, a player that was injured for much of the season.

Agree completely. Was an issue I had with them (the coaching staff) more often than one ought to have. Most obvious to me was the 4 qb runs vs Ga at the goal line. On one, I think the second run, it was obvious to me he looked out of sorts. In fact even my Boise State Grandson committed “don’t you have anyone else that can run inside the 5 yard line? He looks hurt.”

My list of QBs that UT fans clamored for the second string-
    1. VY- don’t argue with me here, this forum was on fire for VYs first two years “Great runner, bad passer”
    2. Colt year 1 and 2… ( see notes above as they were identical) people demanded Sneed or Chiles.
    3. Simms- and ummm was harassed at UT and that doesn’t line up with the records book and by the way -played pro ball.

Card is good, folks. Really good. Ewers is as well- but I’ll be shocked if Card isn’t QB1 opening day.
We, the UT fan base, needs to learn from the pressure put on these 17 year old boys, like Swoops, Ash and Gilbert.
Let’s let Ewers get his feet under himself and let Card focus on being a QB- not Moses.

NR, you and I see this very differently.

VY was an amazing talent. True, people weren’t sure about his passing, but few wrote that part of his game off.

Colt was so good in his second year that before the injury — on that sneak against KSU — many believed that he would be invited to the Heisman ceremony, that year.

Simms, a great talent, lacked the “it” factor, and he was a shrinking violent when it mattered the most.

We’ll see about Card. But I think you are overrating him.

You and I agree on the assessments of the former QBs.
My point was more directed at an unusually high number of fans who clamor for QB2 once the freshman savior doesn’t live up to their expectations.
