That's not controversial at all, unless you are a college "professor" who makes a living teaching useless crap to academically mediocre kids, and needs to have an ever greater supply of mediocrity to keep his/her job.

I will take your ahem, ahem, cough, cough, "opinion" into consideration as I prepare for my lecture in Theory of Transexual Dance in the Upper Volta circa 1817-1852 class.

Another controversial opinion. Who cares about performance enhancing drugs? Let's let athletes do whatever they want to see how good they can be?

Crappie is the best freshwater table fish in the South.

Walleye is the best freshwater table fish in the North (followed closely by any variety of trout).

Gaido’s (Galveston) “Red Snapper Michael” is the best restaurant fish dish in Texas.

That'll get an opinion out of @SabreHorn pretty damned quick. I have no idea if he will concur or contradict, but I wager he won't stay silent!

    SN,

It is hard to beat. Time was when I would have argued that Floyd's was better, but the last couple of trips to Floyd's when the wayward coonass wasn't walking around in shorts and his golf shoes, the redfish and red snapper were not edible. In fact on one trip, I needed a steak knife to cut the fish. (That hurts to say because I've been friends with Floyd for over forty years.)

Of all the seafood restaurants in Texas, I would submit that none has maintained its consistency of excellence as well as Gaido's.

Catfish is only decent if it's farm raised. Otherwise it is a bottom feeder **** eater and tastes like that too.

Problem is this would quickly become the same as mandating them.

But yet it wouldn't be a mandate. Each athlete would have to decide for themselves how far they are willing to go and set their own goals accordingly.

We should change our state flag to that blue flag with one big white star; it spells out T E X A S in between the star’s points.

Gaido’s Italian Weddimg Cake is one of the top 3 desserts in Texas. The other 2 are Coconut Creme Pie at the Capital Grille, and Cherries Jubilee at The Old Warsaw.

And speaking of The Old Warsaw, it was the best steakhouse in Texas. And I don’t want to hear any blabbering on about that place South of Abilene in Buffalo Gap... :beertoast:

I’ve heard that they may have recently re-opened Old Warsaw after the building was razed to build an uptown Dallas skyscraper. I’ll have to try the new spot. Not sure if they can replicate the atmosphere or the food.

I only ate at Old Warsaw half a dozen times and was never that impressed. I'm sure I missed its heyday. But I have had many steaks at different places that exceed what I got at Old Warsaw.

Perini's? Best prime rib I've ever eaten.

The Hobbit was even better than the 3 Lord of the Rings movies. Of those 3, The Two Towers was easily the best.

Fantasy lit giant Michael Moorcock (who in recent years moved from England to Bastrop, Texas) has a very controversial opinion about The Lord of the Rings: It's "Epic Pooh"!

"Moorcock criticises a group of celebrated writers of epic fantasy for children, including Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Richard Adams. His criticism is based on two principal grounds: what he sees as the poverty of their writing style, and a political criticism. Moorcock accuses these authors of espousing a form of "corrupted Romance", which he identifies with AnglicanToryism. The defining traits of this attitude are an anti-technological, anti-urban stance which Moorcock sees as ultimately misanthropic, that glorifies a vanishing or vanished rural idyll, and is rooted in middle-class or bourgeois attitudes towards progress and political change."

Tolkien was definitely anti-technological, not certain about anti-urban (some of the "good guys" had vast cities), and I have a hard time connecting either of those traits to misanthropism, though I don't doubt Moorcock managed a tortured logical route to get there.
Tolkien definitely glorified a rural idyll, though again, connecting that to middle class or burgeois attitudes probably took some tortuous leaps of logic.

Tolkien's and Lewis's critique of the industrial revolution doesn't make it "epic pooh". I disagree with them on the subject but they did notice the things which were lost due to industrialization and liberalization. I think really what they were mourning was the growth of the modern state and its voracious appetite for war and destroying objective moral values. That comes through clearly in Lewis's "That Hideous Strength."
