VY shirted in 2002 while Simms started and played pretty well. It was the best production year for the "Big 3" receivers.

Rewatched it again and here's the main takeaways:

    1. Trench play is just messy.
On any given play, it was difficult to discern what the OL and DL were doing. Are they forming a pocket? Are they running a stunt? About 75 percent of the time, the ball would be snapped and everyone would just street-ball it out with some dudes confused and others confused-but-pretending-they're-not. I'm not sure if this was on the coaches, or just some kind of command to "play hard but don't get hurt" kind of thing. But when I consistently said "wtf is he doing?" at any given player from the OL/DL, that's not good.

    2. Nice to see TEs, but...
I just don't know if we're ready to unleash that position. I'll believe it when I see it in a real game and not a practice. I'd rather see how well they block, considering our RB statuses. And they did not block well on Saturday.

    3. Brains need to match effort.
Not much to say about it. I'd venture that over half of our losses are mental and not due to X's and O's stuff. We still seem to have good athletes who make dumb mistakes.

    Positives:
    • Both QBs seem to be better than what we had in April 2021. Card is improved.
    • We have skill position depth.
    • We have DB depth.
    • We actually have LBs playing the LB position, although not super-successfully.
    • Team speed has done a complete 180 from Strong's final season. We've gone from one of the slowest teams I've ever seen to a very speedy one.
    • Some of the young guys and transfers stood out... which I think will help others in the portal see that we're a good landing destination.
    • They seemed to be having fun and helping each other out.

2nd team O line looked atrocious. I hope like hell the freshmen coming in can take playing time away from those 2nd team guys, and do it almost immediately.

Nestor seems to be a senior, healthy version of Omiere. I hope Omiere plays some this year and replace Nestor in 2023.

If you're talking about VY, Simms was already in the NFL when VY got here. (actually VY redshirted Simms last year)
"As a redshirt freshman during the 2003 season, Young was initially second on the depth chart behind Chance Mock. However, Mock was benched halfway through the season (in the game against Oklahoma) in favor of Young. After that game, Young and Mock alternated playing time, with Young's running ability complementing Mock's drop-back passing."
    Vince Young - Wikipedia

So, there was no big decision to go with VY come hell or high water.

One thing that will come to fruition.
Whomever Sark names QB1, the UT masses will loudly disagree.
One cannot ever be proven wrong by stating QB2 is better, so actually genius move.
It’s like the sun rising in the East or geese heading South in the winter.

These experts have been to 0 practices, team meetings nor interacted during any game type environments with said QBs, however they know better than the coaching staff.
I respect 99% of the people’s opinions in this forum,,, and we all could make a strong case for either quarterback

    I trust Sark.

What does Sark know about being a successful QB?

Take the word "magically" out of this sentence and it seems questionable. "I don't believe Card became a better QB over the winter." Ok then - why don't you believe it? A lot of players improve over most offseasons, though of course not all players improve every offseason. Why is it that you are so sure Card didn't improve during this particular offseason?

I'm going into next season just like last, I don't care who starts. Hopefully one of them can put some W's on the board.

I recall a very heated debate last year. When the season started half were jubilant that Card was named the starter then two games in half was jubilant to find out that Card wasn't the guy and Thompson was named the starter. In the end we found out neither could make it happen consistently. I just want someone to step on that field with swagger, leadership and the ability to make some small magic happen when it needs to happen translating to some W's.

If we're going to talk about this let's at least get all the facts on the table. Casey was pretty damn good until he had to play with a thumb swollen to 3x normal size thanks to an OL that sucked big time.

Now a defense that couldn't stop grandma from crossing the road is a whole different story.

Recall during our swoon last year, it didn’t help that we had injuries in key areas such as QB, RB, WR, OL, DE, LB (just to name a few!).

Less injuries and better depth = 8-4 on its own.

    Yeah, Stat.
    I don't get the Card presumtiveness..and pessimism.
Very few freshmen/inexperienced Qbs come in ready to rock...very few. And on that team with that pressure and chemistry and that oline??
My view is opposite. i fully expect about 70+% of all raw college QBs to make nice strides after year 1...though remember he didnt even get a full year, so you could view that as positive or negative in relation to where he should be measured now.
My observation on HF is Qb analysis is one of the most emotionally subjective and inaccurate, irrational aspects of opinions/perspectives here.
Really intelligent people all of a sudden go dumb...myself included.
People like someone for who knows what reasons...or dislike them for who knows what reasons...and all sound reason, logic, and objectivity go out the window.
    a truly strange phenomenon.

I think we could have gone 10-2 even with the injuries last season. Arkansas and ISU were basically foregone conclusions (by mid-2nd quarter for the Pigs and mid-3rd quarter for ISU), but all we needed in each of the remaining games was one damn stop. Maybe 2 for WVU.

This team seems to have a better head on its shoulders than the 2021 version, but the biggest thing they need to wrap their brains around on D is the value of getting an offense off the field. It's not sexy to hold a team to a 6-and-out. But it wins games. Heck, instead of 1 stop, get like 3 or 4 against OU and we win by that many scores.

There were some unusual warm up exercises I noticed Sat. Made me wonder if they were related to injury prevention inspired by last years terrible injury rate.

I've been on this site for 21 years. The things I know are certain are death, taxes and a QB argument every off-season. I'm literally playing Switzerland in this not promoting one nor the other and someone still wanted to argue with me. I love Hornfans! :hookem:

I watched the highlights of the spring game on YouTube since I don't get the LHN. My observations are that Card will start with Ewers coming in before mop up duty and we will all be biting our fingernails off because our defense sucks. Meaning, we will have very close games where we could win or lose based on the play of our defense.

I would like to see defensive progression during the season and I am thinking a 7-5 or 8-4 record but won't be surprised if we have more than 5 loses.

Switzerland is Dallas, where he last coached and the local team won its last Super Bowl. That was before many on this board were born

and we will all likely be deceased before it happens again

Hiring Switzer was the final straw.

He didn't really hire Barry, it was Barry doing him a favor because NO ONE else would take the job. It gave Barry a residence in Texas, free of Oklahoma taxes. The second year was more difficult. Not sure Jones isn't still paying Barry.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

A little history: Jones, Barry and Jimmy Johnson were all teammates at Ark. 1964 season.

Agree, Jones hired low-life Barney to coach the Cowboys because nobody wanted the job and the bootleggers boy needed a new gig.... IMHO it was a new low for the Cowboys :(

    Worster,

I agree with your post except that Barry didn't "need a new gig". He had more money than he could spend and had extensive income producing businesses in spite of the fact that he was continually helping former players who were down on their luck.

He still does. I can paraphrase but not quote from one of our conversations - Some people you cannot help. Try to keep them from sinking without being an enabler. He has always been and will always be one of those people. He nearly tears up every time that guy's name comes up.

No coach ever cared more about his players than Barry.

Is that funny because Barry allowed his players to clearly break NCAA rules?
He did but what Sabre is saying is he also tries to help the ones now down on their luck.
Both things can be true. Barry was wrong to let them run wild but he also can care about the ones needing help now.
On the whole he is a POS but with a tiny good spot
