Hmmm. Did he try to help Marcus Dupree (other than buying his Moma a double-wide)? I believe he tried to make Dupree play on a bum knee. Did he see Dupree as one who couldn't be saved?

Actually, I'm glad to hear that he has some redeeming value...although the Red River still isn't sacred enough to baptize him into my good graces.

Marcus quit on Barry, not the other way around.

FWIW, the "buying of Marcus Dupree" had nothing to do with housing nor automobiles.

Obviously I don't know the whole story. From what I've seen & read neither one is lilly white (but then, who is?).

Don't believe anything from ESPN (if they knew or know the truth, they couldn't afford to reveal it), and certainly not that book some guy wrote white washing the whole thing. Suffice it to say that the truth will likely never come out, at least in my lifetime. That said, Marcus NEVER wanted to go to Oklahoma, but Barry & Scott (not giving much credit to Selmon, although I probably should since he may have been the one to find "the way" to get Marcus to Norman) were able to find the "soft underbelly to get it done.

Like them or not, Barry Switzer & Scott Hill always did their homework and found the best way to "sell" the family on the Sooners. I learned from them about thoroughly doing your homework in any business endeavor.

I really wanted Scott to be a Longhorn, and Texas was his dream school until his recruiting visit. Certain people in our program I will never forgive for ******* that up. FWIW, Scott's dad played at Tech, but they were a fallback choice.

It looks like Barry and Scott thumbed their noses at NCAA regs to get the players they wanted

More a case of "catch us if you can".

Ask yourself, if everyone involved in recruiting (both alums & staff) knew what everyone was doing, why did the NCAA pay private investigators who could find NOTHING.

Cuz okie wanted a winning program more than they valued following the rules????
Their identity is tied up with football, NOT a first class academic institution.

Two quotes from Norman will live in infamy:

The president of OU saying, "I want to build an academic institution that the football team can be proud of".

Switzer saying, "I didn't create the monster, I just have to keep feeding it".

Have to hand it to Coach Bud for being the best college football coach of all time and building an empire.

There was a coach at Clemson being interviewed on ESPN and he was talking about game day there. Then he gestured off toward the Academic buildings and said, And I know they do good stuff over there too"

I was part of a study several years ago that reviewed the major schools that are now part of the P5. It covered about 30 years and showed there was a direct correlation between the number of football games won & success of the program and the amount of money donated for academics to that university

I wonder if NIL will change that. But going forward there may also be a high correlation between NIL money and academic donations.

Dr Boren spent it wisely when he was there, mostly feeding egos by putting people's names on new buildings and "recruiting" students (not athletes) from Texas. At one time, the three most popular schools for Texas Exes kids were SWT, TCU, & OU.

The swift move on firing Schnellenberger after his colossal *** show sent a message to donors & potential donors that NO individual is more important than our donors, and your honor and that of your family will be protected by this administration

Arkansas is now the non-UT school of choice for Texas ex’s kids—and OU ex’s kids, too.

At last check, Arkansas has more kids from Texas than from Arkansas. For quite a while they would waive out of state tuition for Texas kids. Not sure if they still are.

When Johnny Tyson and the Waltons built the new XNA outside of Bentonville, major airlines started flying death darts nonstop to and from Dallas, Houston, LAX, Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, NYC, DC, among others

That makes Arkansas much more appealing because the kids are no longer "stranded" in Fayetteville.

Schnellenberger! I remember when he was at Okie, someone asked him about Oklahoma and he responded with something like “ I’ve never seen so many people missing teeth.” I laughed for days.
