I definitely wouldn't want a state income tax and doubly wouldn't want one if property taxes were not constitutionally eliminated. And even then I wouldn't want one. I would just hate it less.

However, there has been too much emphasis on avoiding certain kinds of taxes (and things politicians call taxes) and not enough emphasis on controlling spending (especially by local governments). If the government spends a lot of money, it's going to take it out of us somehow whether it's by income, property, or sales tax.

Many Texas cities are loaded up with debt too, and many of them aren't even cities that we tend to think of as liberal. It's these stupid bond elections they hold every year. People just mindlessly vote for them or not vote at all and let them pass, and they forget that it's deficit spending that our kids and grandkids will have to pay off.

Granted. I recognize some non-liberal cities are being stupid about spending. However, I can't think of a single one run by lefty libs that isn't a complete financial mess.

Believe it or not, Austin has a lot of debt, but you can do worse - Dallas and Houston.

My taxing school district of Thrall ISD just passed a $65 million school bond with a total of 601 votes cast. This with a total city population of 1,046 and total school population from k thru 12th grade of 777 kids from the surrounding area. This is following them passing a $15 mil bond just a few years ago that turned into a $20+ mil school boondoggle.

This is how dumb people are, the ISD sold it on zero tax increases and the people bought it. The school and most of the teachers are awful.

The budget for the entire city was $580,000 last year. WTF do they need $65 million for schools? People love debt and shiny new things.

Did they do the math on that? That's $81K for every man, woman, and child. That's more than the per capita national debt. I hate to second guess you, but are you sure about those numbers? That's just insane.

It's absolutely stupid. People are incapable of thinking for themselves, they just believe the liars in charge telling them what they want to hear.

"You mean we can get a $65 million new school system and not pay anything for it?" WHOOOOO!!! Luckily they had a SECOND bond for $4 million in new athletic facilities that failed. I can't believe $65 million doesn't already include that.

Let's let this sink in. There are an average of 60 kids per grade level or two classrooms of 30 each per grade. I can't even figure out what they need $65 million for except pocket money.

I'm a big believer in sales tax over property or income tax. I served on 2 city councils in my day and on both we were able to reduce the city's property tax to 0. It solves a lot of problems: IRS goes away, property valuation by the government goes away, the definition of "income" goes away, tax loopholes go away. Also, people are encouraged then to save, re-use, upcycle, freecycle, barter, trade, etc. There's already mechanisms in place in every state to collect sales tax.

You'd have to figure out how small towns, counties, etc. get funded if there is limited retail/wholesale in their jurisdiction. And yes I'd tax both retail and wholesale otherwise people just start their own "company" to buy tax free wholesale.

That is absolutely horrific. Frankly, I'm surprised they could get the credit to borrow like that. They really need to reform the bond election racket. What they should do is require a percentage percentage of the public to vote on a bond initiative before it can be approved, and they need to cap the per capita debt. What Thrall ISD borrowed is insane.

    Easy boys, easy now....
It may be bad, but $65million will buy you three elementary schools, a Thrall sized high school, or a middle school and an elementary school.

If the district is buying schools, those schools last 30-40 years, or longer, so you need to consider how many kids will be served over that period of time, not just how many are in the system right now.

That's definitely a point to consider, buy damn, that's an assload of money for a district that small.

    What the absolute F????

This is like terrorist who celebrate in the street after the killing of innocents.

How many of these protesters wish their parents had aborted them? I used to work with youth in our church. I never looked at a single one of them and thought the world would have been better off if their mother would have killed them off.

This is going to hurt dems in that this will be their main focus of May and June. July is vacation month. By mid-August, folks are returning to office and school, looking at their schedules between then and the holidays (or elections). At some point reality is going to set in for the dems. When a 50 seat loss is going be realized, not sure what they will do. Likely whistle past the graveyard. In any event, there is no upside in what they are capable of doing.

They moved into a $20 million high school two years ago. All I know of for sure is they are building a new elementary school and admin offices. The middle school is about 20 years old and might be getting updated. I bet we see athletic facilities improved even though that bond failed. I'm guessing the $65 mil will turn into $75-$80 mil making the tax payers $100 mil in debt for a new HS, middle school and admin building. For a town of a little over 1,000.

Eric Adams blasts pro-life 'radical extremists,' says women have 'right' to abortions up until day of birth

These rabid feminist men (I didn't say effeminate) are basically kissing women's a**.

NO RESTRICTIONS EVER ON ABORTIONS. That's what Adam's said. And he's saying it with an arrogant FU tone.

Well, that's a Liberal mentality folks and that's why they must be voted out.

The only thing he has going for him is he's against defunding the police but it's only because he's accountable for crime now.

I'm curious how you view the Underground Railroad. We have the luxury with hindsight to say the Underground Railroad was absolutely 100% morally correct. However, it's entire purpose was to violate state law, federal law, and the Constitution itself (Article 4, Section 2, Clause 3)! But the Railroad worked in part because it had the support of authorities in locales that supported abolition. I hope you say you're glad these folks without constitutional authority intervened to free slaves...

Are you sure you're a Democrat with your love of the Constitution and hatred of the liberal mindset?

Not comparable. The Underground Railroad was an act of civil disobedience largely by private individuals though public officials did sometimes look the other way. Even when public officials helped, they didn't claim to be acting with the authority of law. That isn't comparable to the Feds coming in without any constitutional authority to force its will on a state that is acting within its constitutional authority.

Accordingly, if pro-life activists want to go into California and try to stop the abortion agenda, that's fine. I'm all for it. However, does Congress have the right to step in and say California cannot permit abortion? No. That is abusive and tyrannical.

I'm not sure it's the right argument, but in a court where the judge is looking for a way to enforce the statute on the protestors, I think it would be a winning argument. If the judge is looking for a way not to enforce, I think would lose.

We were the other direction for 50 years. I condemned it, and if we go the other way, I'll condemn that.

Saw a similar effort in Klein ISD a few weeks ago...they tried selling it to seniors as no impact on them due to the freezing of taxes and regular homeowners as only up to a dime per hundred of valuation.

At least the law requires them to break each major project into a separate proposition...so we had four of them, including a chunk for a shiny new athletic complex and a shiny new performing arts center. Also one for new construction plus extra buildings to be added to existing campuses (oh yay, more temporary buildings that never go away). I think the fourth one was basically tablets for every student.

I voted against all four. Not sure if mom voted for any of them. Two passed.

As to Thrall, remember that the rural ISD's are not just limited to city population...the service area also tends to include a lot of people OUTSIDE of the city limits, as evidenced by your population of the city barely being four digits but with almost 800 students.

My default position on all bonds is to vote No. If something is truly necessary and a good use of money, I'll vote Yes. However, that has only happened maybe two or three times in the 28 years I've been voting.

But the property taxes of schools not in city limits go to public schools, right? Those people also have the right to vote on these things.

The turf football/soccer fields get me. A decade ago it was $1 million and we saved the football coaches mowing it year round and striping it 3-4 times per year. Poor investment as it's bad for kids and the environment.

Yes... I want the Liberals to move on. The Democrats used to be rational. Liberals are not what I'm about. I am as repulsed by them as I am about religious zealots and believe me, I've dealt with the zealots in my personal life. The take no prisoner, refusal to compromise, hateful/judgmental, obsessive mind-sets are a cancer on our country.
