    Worster,

Remembering Austin in the days when most of us had little to no money or had squandered the monthly allowance mom and dad sent. The days of the girl I was dating picking me up and taking me to Dirty's or that horrible burger place on Lamar between 34th & 45th; writing a hot check for the extra grease platter at The Plantation on 19th; MooreBurger, have been replaced with Sushi, Vegan, overpriced "fancy" dinners with 200 of your favorite fake friends.

You could always get your parents a room at the Chariot Inn because it was sooo far out of town, but now is "crack central". People in Austin thought if they lived farther than 4-5 miles from work their life had ended.

Progress can be wonderful, but our Austin has faded like my old Gant oxford cloths.

    WorsterMan,

You had me at Chariot Inn! Classic! You could have at least thrown in El Patio for good measure! I must have seen Earl in there 25 times!

    Hoff,

No problem. El Patio is my first or last stop in Austin depending on kickoff time. I'll miss the days of "wrestling" Jim Bob Moffett for a table.

    Sabre,

I'm old enough to remember Dirty's. Night Hawk restaurant was missing from your list..... Did you ever stay at the Villa Capri?

I remember Dirty's, Louie's, Scholz's Beer Garden the NightHawk. I stayed at the Villa Capri when I went to Austin for registration in '74 and ate at the NightHawk. Louis had Lone Star long neck beers for 40 cents all day every day. All beer, bottle or draft were 35-40 cents during happy hour. Place got demolished to put up a building. It was catty-cornered across the street from Scholtz's. Man, thems were the days!

Did you ever go to the Hoffbrau Steak House down on 6th Street? I would go about once a month, order the large sirloin and take it home. That steak would last me a week.

Villa Capri & Hoffbrau were for rich people. You could get a room at The Terrace Motel on South Congress for $7 but TV cost IIRC $0.25 for 30 minutes. If you went to the Terrace, it wasn't to watch TV.

I did frequent Gus' & G/M Steak houses. Louie's had the Jacks & Queens pinball machine and you didn't dare get close to it after 4 PM because Commissioner of Banking Robert Stewart had it reserved along with the them bringing him a cold Pearl.

Nau's on San Gabriel had a pretty good burger.

Are you old enough to remember "Gordon", the newspaper guy and his 1959 green Chevy Belair? The guy knew every good-looking coed on campus and where she lived. When you finally pried her name and info out of him, you got those infamous words, "She's a really nice girl so you be good to her".

Was he the old dude that hung out on campus, dressed well, wore a fedora and sunglasses, chewed gum, and would say "howdy" to the good looking girls then chat them up as they walked? Never knew his name, we referred to him as "Chester the Molester" but he seemed fairly harmless.

    Joe,

Not Gordon. Gordon wore khakis and regular shirt. I can't do it in print, but "Paypa, paypa, lady, paypa". Worked the West Mall all day and at night was down in front of Paramount Theater. Totally harmless.

Anybody remember Hecter's Taco Flats? $1 pitchers of beer & 10 cent tacos. I was surprised the Health Dept didn't shut it down, but great cheap tacos & beer.

Swinging fists in the Orange Bull…. Tequila night at the Hole in the Wall….
SchoPro lounge…. Damn, you fellows just caused a stream of memories.

    I don't know.
A lot of what I read after aggy left the B12 was screw them, never play them again.
I never wanted to see a game with them ever again unless we ended up playing in a bowl game.
I still would rather never play them again but it appears we will have to.

I'm sure Bowelsby felt "weird" not having Chuckie NeinASS there for Bowelsby to stick his head up his ***.

I actually like playing aggy at Pyle field the first time in the SEC. It will probably be a little bit like Nebraska in 2010. Nebraska waited almost a year to “kick our ***” after the 2009 Championship game and were pumped prior to that game. My two sons and I attended the game and in their fans mind, they were going to roll us. Pretty quiet after the game other than some fans telling us it was a classy move for Brown to take a knee at the end.
Well, aggie has had over ten years of waiting and dreaming of beating us. By the start of that game on their own field and being mustered up by their cult chants, they will be going full aggie with all the confidence of a sure victory.
I for one think aggie is most amusing when they hit the wall going full speed, like 2011 and 1995.

    Aggies...
I was one of those folks who hoped we'd never have to experience the oddball aggie athletic "tradition" ever again.

They will be in full froth for that first game. We really need to shut them out: I do not want to see corps turds tongue raping their girlfriends.

    Jeeesh.

Does anyone remember Slick’s Cafe (circa 1966-67) on Speedway north of campus? A true hole-in-the-wall, the guy there served steaks, which he would fry while you waited on a bar stool, whistling and swatting flies that were attracted by the aroma.

Short for Scholastic Probation Lounge, I suspect... just the kind of bar I would have fit in. I never was placed on Scho-Pro but I came dangerously close my freshman year....

My UT grad brother brags to others he made the Deans List his Sophomore year... the Deans listing inviting him to NOT return to campus if he didn't get his grades up!

    Worster,

The Bud was served in frosted pitcher with frosted mugs. It was so cold that their was ice on top. Beer selection was very limited, but Budweiser was on sale for (IIRC) $1.25 a pitcher. Rarely more than a few people in there because it was at 29th & Guadalupe (WAYYYYY FAR north).

I seem to remember ice forming on the bottom of the mugs at the ScoPro, except for my buddy’s mug because it never stayed full enough for Ice tto form. Ha! He was on and off probation for five years before graduating.
I guess I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to those fine young women at “The Sitting Bull”.
