That is why I have been hoping Vic can bring in someone for this season who is a "natural" point guard. Hate to call it an "insurance policy", but it would be depth at that position if Rori is unable to start/play in any games, regardless of the reason.

Unsubstantiated rumor that she will grad-transfer to Stanford. That would be huge for them not having to depend on a true freshman PG this coming season.

    Hold the damn phone!

Saw these 2 posts (different posters) on the UConn message board:

    - Per The Ball Out, Shaylee Gonzales is reportedly down to NC State, Texas and Oregon State.

    - Saw that on Benny's House

And here’s the deal @Moooooo…..she would not be coming to Texas just to backup Rori. We are talking WNBA material so I’d believe she would be playing the 2 and 3 spots at times. She would most likely get major playing time. This would be a huge pickup for us….. Thanks for the investigative work…

I am not familiar with her "natural" position. or how she was utilized at BYU.

If she comes to Texas to play the 2 or 3, then that means less minutes for Matharu or Morris, which would seem strange to me, especially as Morris could play the 2 or 3

I think she was a PG, but a player that good would not come here just to back up Rori. She is 5’10” so she could play other wing positions. This girl is no joke and from what I’ve read WNBA material. She ain’t just a backup so I have to believe Vic would utilize her skills at other positions on the perimeter.

I would think her route to most playing time would be through Oregon State, most wins and deep tourney run potential would be NC State or Texas.

I'm honestly shocked that we are in contention for Gonzales. She has 2 seasons of eligibility remaining. I was assuming she would be a grad-transfer, but not positive. BYU did have a head coaching change a few weeks ago, so she'd most likely be eligible immediately at her new school.

I peeked at her Instagram page yesterday. The only Longhorn connection was an odd one -- former A&M hoopster and Longhorn grad-transfer hoopster, Danni Willaims recently started following Shaylee, and vice verse.

And, looking at Danni's IG page, she was recently practicing in a Nike KD Longhorn shirt and shorts. So, that was nice to see.

    And, that's a logical assessment.

When a transfer is (supposedly) down to 3 schools, they're most likely familiar with depth charts, how they'll be utilized, etc. If they didn't like those specifics, those teams wouldn't be in their final three, IMO.

If Vic is really pursuing her to play at Texas that means he is willing to sacrifice 1 or 2 or possibly even 3 of his young guard/forwards. The less established guards would not want to hang around another 2 years. But on the other hand Gonzalez is a can’t miss player who would make an immediate impact on the team in that pursuit of a National Championship!

If we do get Gonzales she can play 1-3. Now she would definitely see more of the 2-3 spot unless Harmon is in foul trouble. My prediction would be..

    1. Harmon
    2. Gonzales
    3. Morris
    4.Moore
    5. Jones

Of course this is hypothetical and that does take out Matharu but, Matharu is going to get plenty of minutes. She came off the bench last year and it was beneficial to her in my opinion just because she does play hard and sparks a fire off the bench. She can also shoot lights out so Matharu is a great 6th man. Gonzales is the real deal so you don’t pass her up if you make her top 3. Bring her home Vic and let’s go win a natty!!:hookem:

Well again a player this good would not come just to back up Rori. She’s capable of playing 1 through 3, so you can bet Vic would utilize her in any of those spots….BUT she ain’t comin to Tx to sit the bench…. She may come off the bench, but she would play major minutes….

Exactly! Case in point, there was this team about 20 years ago that had two natural PGs both capable of starting. Their names were Nina Norman and Jamie Carey and the team was Texas and interestingly enough that was the last time said team made the final four. #justsayin

If she has experience playing (starting) point guard at BYU, that's a great player to add to our roster. With her size and shooting ability, being able to play 2 additional positions is a huge bonus.

I'd prefer to look as it as Vic wanting to improve the roster, and promoting more competition in the practice gym. And, potentially adding more experience at some positions.

But, there are always trickle-down effects when you bring in new players (high school signees and transfers). For all we know, the pursuit of Shaylee Gonzales might have impacted Kobe's decision to transfer out.

Looking at Shaylee Gonzales' 2021-22 stats, they aren't totally what I expected:

    - 49.5% from 2-pt land
    - 22.7% from 3-pt land
    - 83.3% FT

So, I guess she's better at driving to basket, or a very good mid-range shooter? For someone who shoots free throws very well, she is definitely not average level at 3-point shooting. Still, seems like a very good all-around player.

49.5 from 2 point land is excellent…..22.7 from 3 is terrible. I thought I saw better stats in her from 3 point land…..ugh…

Well, based on those stats, we're not recruiting her as a 3-point specialist.

But, if hardly any of her 18 points per game were coming from long range, that must mean that she is finding other ways to score, and able to create her own shot; and doing that well at almost 50% shooting. You don't average that many points if you don't have a scorer's mentality, especially playing at the point.

18PPG, 4.5APG, 1.7A/TO ratio and her career 3PT% is .306, which includes last season, so she has been better in the past.

These are really good numbers. She is the WAC player of the year and would be a huge asset even if not from behind the arc.

    Shaylee:
    2018-19 .351 from 3 54 out of 154
    2020-21 .311 from 3 38 out of 122
    2021-22 .227 from 3 22 out of 97
Weirdness. Shot less each year and her percentage dropped as well. Seems like a coaching staff might want to take a look at that.....

Very quick hands, can use some work on positioning. She attempts to take a lot of charges and has a tendency to sometimes be just shy of where she needs, but overall has a good IQ and a lot of potential with a possible two years under Vic. Already averages 2.3 steals per game, Rori averaged 2.4.

Here's a video that demonstrates Shaylee's quick hands, high-motor, and her ability to drive to the rim. She is a great ball handler and has a nice pull-up jumper and floater. This is a 15 minute video but her skill set and talent will be evident in the first 5 minutes.

Gonzales is a really solid player, but I don't see her starting regularly in front of Matharu.

Not sure why they caption it “for the win“. For the basketball players on that list (7), only a few (Bueckers, Van Lith & Gonzales) would be considered real difference makers at their actual sport. Also, it’s an incredibly pale group relative to the sport they play.

This is based solely on the number of social media followers they have. These athletes have large social media followings, regardless of their level of performance or what might appear to be a lack of overall interest in their sport. I attended a conference a few weeks ago where an entertainment lawyer from LA spoke for an hour on NIL. I was pretty surprised how much what an athlete can make is tied to the number of social media followers they have. However, what this chart doesn't show is the compensation an athlete might be able to command solely because they are perceived to be a star athlete in a significant sport, where a booster or a collective really values them being a member of that school's team. That is far better compensation than what the athlete could get paid as a social media influencer promoting someone's product. And yeah, I know the booster scenario sounds like pay for play, but you know its going on because we've seen examples of it in the news.

After watching extended video of her, I have to agree. I had read somewhere WNBA prospect, but not so sure about that, I think this is Matharus year to shine.
