Hypothetical Question from Position of Almost Pure Ignorance

I know next to nothing about the new rules for allowing players to make money off their names, so there is a 99% chance this is a stupid question, but here goes anyway.
Suppose you are the top-rated recruit at your position in the country. You have been waiting to the last minute to decide among Texas, Alabama, and Ohio State. Finally, you decide you'd like to go to Texas, but Texas already has given out the maximum number of scholarships allowed that year and has the top-rated class in the country. Might endorsement money at Texas be so high that you would go anyway because the value of those endorsements would dwarf the value of a scholarship? Okay, feel free to dump on me--I can take it. P.S. "Endorsements" probably isn't the correct terminology, but I meant to refer to whatever the new source of income is.

I believe a volleyball team member may be forgoing her scholarship to help the team because her NIL money is enough.

Stanin I think you have simply listed one of 232 possible issues with this whole can of worms.

I think it’s a great question, one that had not crossed my mind until now.

There’s another way to look at it. Let’s say some conniving program like that cult school 90 miles to the east persuaded two or three top recruits to forgo their scholarships because of the NIL money, thus enabling the school to offer scholarships to additional players.

Like nashhorn said, what a can of worms.

I guess a broader way to phrase the question is: will the new rules result in the top schools being less constrained (or even unconstrained) by scholarship limits?

Until some rules are passed and enforced ‘everything’ is possible and I can assure you, being discussed.

I believe Ricky Williams gave up his scholarship because he had baseball money.
So it's not really something new.

Ricky never had a scholarship. The Dodgers were required to pay for his education. He wasn't the first at Texas, nor D-1.

"If it weren’t for the scholarship I got to go to the University of Texas, I wouldn’t be where I am today."
Throwback Thursday: Texas' Ricky Williams - Textbook Ricky

So, was he offered a scholarship and then the Dodgers had to pay for the scholarship?
Did this keep the scholarship tied to Ricky or open up a scholarship for another recruit?

Article says he played for the Phillies, not Dodgers.

My bad, I think Cedric Benson was the Dodgers. Unless the rules have changed, they are on scholarship paid for by MLB team. It was also my understanding that this counted against the total (walkons) but not the 85 limit

There are no limits I know of on how many walk-ons a team can have. Heck, with this question it makes me wonder if the money gets big enough will football scholarships be a thing of the past some day.

Lady in the Google box says NCAA D1 teams may have a roster total of 118.

    85 scholies & 33 walkons

    A missing piece here.

IRS comes knocking, illicit drugs, making it rain … without some direction this could create problems.

Amazing thread title. I couldn't help but clock it to find out what the topic was about.

My biggest concern is what if the NIL money has already been spent for the year? Does a recruit wait to the end anymore if they are that highly rated?

    I don't think there's a limit to NIL money.

There may be a limit as to how much supporters are willing or able to pay.

From this article, it sounds like there is no limit to the number of players at a particular school that can receive NIL money, no limit on the available NIL money at a particular school, and no tie between NIL money and a school's scholarship limits--it's just whatever amount(s) of money (if any) that each particular player (regardless of whether he is a scholarship or walk-on player) is able to negotiate with an entity (or entities) outside the school for the use of that player's name, image, or likeness (NIL) --https://www.si.com/fannation/college/cfb-hq/ncaa-football/college-football-nil-rule-changes-what-you-need-to-know

Any business/individual can pay NIL money to a player if they want said player to support their product or service.
They don't necessarily have to be a supporter.

Right, but the market for such services is not unlimited.

    Excerpted:

“Two things remain disallowed by NCAA rules: 1) you can't pay a player, and, 2) no quid pro quo.

Players aren't supposed to get any compensation tied for performance, and recruits cannot sign any NIL deal contingent on going to any particular school.”

Good luck enforcing that last one. What a joke.

Jimbo Fisher has no idea what NIL is.
“They have a guy” that knows, but he knows nothing.

I heard Aggie recruits talking about this, I guess they didn’t get the memo.

But of course UTs doing it as well.

Until I see evidence to the contrary, based on what I believe to be true with respect to how Texas conducts business versus how The Cult conducts business, I’m going to assume that we are following the spirit of the NIL ruling, and that they are doing anything and everything they can do to abuse the ruling.
