I don't think so. As I understand it, there are three possibilities, but most likely Seawolf Park in Galveston. Wish it would go back to "protecting" the Monument.

For a little humor, I was told that Jefferson County put in a bid because everyone knows there are sooo many tourists looking for a reason to linger in Beaumont, or maybe an added attraction to the "never will be built" casino in Port Arthur.

I don't get why it can't go back to it's former home near the San Jacinto monument?

I dont think it was getting the traffic it might at a more accessible location...............there was alot of money spent on this so I guess they want to maximize the ROI........

    LaHorn,

When I was a kid, we would visit relatives in Houston, go to the Monument & visit the Battleship. Back then, you could crank the smaller guns up and down, & 360 degrees. As a 6-8 year old, that was huge fun. Last I read, The Battleground was still the most visited State Park in Texas, followed by Dam B between Woodville & Jasper.

In spite of the numbers, I really think that over 90% of the population didn't know it was there and closer to 95% have never visited it.

While I much prefer the location on the Ship Channel, there are huge maintenance costs caused by the wakes of ships going up and down the Channel. The Texas was stuck there will no ability to rise and fall with the waves, and really limited access to the hull since the silt had replaced the water.

Another factor is the "casinos". For multiple legislative sessions, there has been a rider placed on some very popular bill that is sure to pass. That rider, which has yet to make it to the floor, allows for casinos to be built and operated on any man-made island in Texas. There are only two - Pleasure Island in Port Arthur and the old loading dock in Galveston. Several years ago, the loading dock in Galveston was moved to the other end of the Port leaving that old "island" primed and vacant for Tillman's casino. If you have been in the San Luis, you realize that George Mitchell built it to be a casino. The rider has failed approval 10-12 times already, and doesn't look favorable for 2023.

Like your comments Sabre I visited with my son right after my work transfer to Houston done 21 years ago. We were the only two there and literally had the run of the ship. He, well both of us really, played with the guns and ran up and down the deck ladders. It was great. He’s grown now and I’ve heard him tell his siblings about our adventure on the ‘Texas’ ship.

(She may have been slow, but she packed a punch! A great platform for shore bombardment; and keeping surface raiders away from our convoys.)

Inspection by Sec of the Navy 1931. This is where the XO gets all the tall, in-shape, guys with very squared-away uniforms to polish their shoes to a high gloss shine, don dress uniforms, and go topside to put on a show for the visiting dignitary...

Plenty of poor new unqualified bodies spent the better part of the past 24 hours polishing the brightwork and swabbing the decks, etc. A real dog and pony show. The real stuff that counts is below decks in the engine room and the gunnery skills as shown in the paintings posted above. But if the Secretary leaves the ship thinking "Wow, what a squared away command!", then the command comes away looking good...
