Do we need a confessions thread?

Wait, no - I don't think we need that

We could use less focus on trig and pre-calc and more focus on statistics in our math classes. The former are great for those with a passion for numbers or are interested in fields where they'll need it. The latter is far, far more useful for the typical human to make better decisions in day to day life, and to understand the world.

I agree, but I'm not sure we put much focus on either one.

There was a time when Californians did too, though that hasn't been true for probably 25 years.

We should re-name the English language (as spoken by Americans) the "American" language and make it the National language.

Very interesting take. It got me thinking: if not Bowie, who?

Well, there is a camp of Baby Boomers that think the Beatles invented every form of music...

When you hear something like that, remind them that ALL OF THE BEATLES were actually from the Silent Generation. You'll get a long silent stare, then some mumbo jumbo about how they were actually Boomers just born a few years too early. (Dylan was also a Silent Generation guy...)

The Cars were early pioneers (late 1970s), but they followed Bowie.

And he could record a bunch of new wave music one day and then sing the Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby the next day.

The Rolling Stones -- what a great concert band!

But Paul McCartney's critique of the Stone has some truth to it: musically, they were mostly a blues cover band.

Since Bowie wasn't his given surname (he was born David Jones but his agent suggested he change it since Davy Jones of the Monkees was already famous), and since he chose the last name specifically after Jim Bowie, I will always maintain it should be pronounced the same way.

It would be like changing your name to Roosevelt but then pronouncing it RAW-se-velt.

I had a family friend who's a music and music history prof tell me that Blondie invented New Wave music. Apparently, they toured with Bowie early on, and he took in a lot of musical inspiration from Blondie...?
