The Red River Rivalry SHOOTOUT begins Saturday at 11 A.M. CT.
    TV = ABC

The Land Thieves come into the Cotton Bowl sporting a 3-2 record and coming off a blowout by TCU, 24-55. The week before they lost to K-State 34-41 at home. Makes ya wanna cry, don't it? Yeah, tears of joy! Now it's the Horns' turn to open the faucet by booming the Sooners.

"Since the end of World War II, only five Red River Shootouts have matched two teams unranked in the AP Poll: 1966, 1967, 1968, 1997, and 1998. The 2022 edition will join that group this Saturday."

Obviously 1968 and 1998 were good seasons for Texas. Maybe 2022 will be as well.

We need somebody in the front row in a TCU jersey like we had back in 2005...

Hudson Card just played the best game of his Longhorn career in a 38-20 victory over West Virginia in which he had a 208.7 quarterback rating.

And now, it’s possible Card’s encore will be handing the ball to Quinn Ewers, who had fans salivating after going 9-of-12 passing for 134 yards against Alabama before having his shoulder driven into the turf by Dallas Turner late in the first quarter.

“I’m not worried about that at all. That’s Coach Sark’s decision,” Card said after completing 21 of 27 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns against West Virginia...

While playing through a sprained ankle suffered against Alabama, Card struggled to connect on deep balls and struggled to connect with Worthy - period - immediately after replacing the injured Ewers. But against WVU, Worthy had a breakout game as Card hit Worthy seven times for 119 yards and two touchdowns...

Card repeatedly showed improved pocket presence, stepping up to make some of his deep-ball throws instead of his propensity last season to duck out the back of the pocket when he sensed real or perceived pressure.

It was the fourth straight game in which Card made a critical play with his feet to pick up a first down to keep a scoring drive alive.

Against Alabama, it was a 20-yard run on second-and-19 in the third quarter to keep alive a drive to a 24-yard field goal that put Texas up 16-10.

Against UTSA, it was a 32-yard run on second-and-22, keeping alive a drive to a touchdown that put Texas up 38-20 with 9:36 left to play. After that play UT running back Bijan Robinson asked Card, “Are you even hurt?”

At Texas Tech, it was a 22-yard run on third-and-10, sustaining a drive to a touchdown that put Texas up 31-17 with 4:27 left in the third-quarter.

In five games this season, Card has completed 74 of 107 passes (69.2 percent) for 923 yards and six touchdowns with one interception.

Eventually - maybe this week - Ewers could become healthy enough that Sarkisian will be faced with a decision based on which quarterback - Card or Ewers - gives the offense more upside.

No matter that decision, Card has proven to be a tough, gutsy warrior who has given everything he has to help the Longhorns enter this week’s Red River Shootout with a winning mindset.

My preference would be to tell them both that 3 will not play this week. Don’t upset the cart and give 3 more time to heal before returning to QB 1 practice reps. Following week back in DKR against Iowa State would be good time to make the switch.

Yeah, I feel like you're always playing with fire when you pull the hot hand in favor of the starter who gives you "upside" but is probably going to be rusty, and may take some time to get in sync with the offense. I get that at some point, Sark wants Quin back in the starting role, but it would be nice to be able to ease him back in a little. I don't know if that's even possible, but tossing him into the biggest rivalry game of the year after being out for three weeks seems a little shaky.

If he’s been throwing all this time in practice and Sark feels he’s ready then he’ll start but for me I’d be inclined to start cars and replace him at the first sign of indecision or poor judgement. But I haven’t watched any practices so as I said before, I’m going to allow Sark to make the call without my input.

Thank you for posting Sark's pressers.:hookem2:
Sark said the QBS were as healthy as they have ever been.
Glad I don't have to make the decision.

Big Questions Heading Into Big Game

Davis Beville didn’t exactly shine in relief of [Okalahoma's] talented quarterback. Texas has shown to be way more capable of winning with their backup quarterback to this point.

Texas has shown to be way more capable of winning with their backup quarterback to this point.

Ultimately, Oklahoma is going to play with their hair on fire defensively with uncertainty on the offensive side. The Sooners’ best chance to win involves aggressive defense that leads to a low scoring game. Card has improved against pressure but reacts a little slower than Ewers.

I would be curious to see what quarterback Texas prepares to face. Beville certainly struggled in relief against TCU, but facing a right-handed Beville may differ from defending against a left-handed Gabriel. How hard Texas players practice is another variable. Last week’s win could make it easy for Texas to start feeling comfortable. They will need the same urgency as last week.

Texas should be the more confident team considering how both teams performed last week. There’s a difference between confidence and arrogance, and the Longhorns need the former.

Best I can tell, this is the first time since 1998 with enter the game unranked. That in itself is rank.

I will be flying, mercifully, so I won't be tempted to watch. Hope Texas wins. I end up in LAS. @mb227 will you be there?

Inside Texas reports that ou QB Dillon Gabriel was jerseyed and throwing at yesterday's practice. He's still in concussion protocol, though.

What that means for any ou player in the protocol is that they are limited to half their usual amount of illegal drugs and two 18oz bottles of bourbon per 1/2 day.

I thought concussion protocol meant no physical activity / practice for a few days??

This game has caused me consternation over the years. In 2003 when I took my kids, they were almost crushed as we tried to make our way to our seats at the beginning of the game. When we moved back to Texas in 2012, I sat in a section that had the most foul-mouthed longhorn (can't use the word fans because of the way they acted) posers that we decided it was enough. This one game gets my blood pressure so high that I now spend the weekend doing something else and listening to bits and pieces on the radio. This year, I'll be decorating ceramic pumpkins with my grandkids. Maybe someday I'll be able to watch this game again live.

There is now proof that aliens from another solar system have visited Earth. They were patrolling the skies with their powerful electron telescopes and stumbled onto our solar system. Their attention was immediately focused toward Earth.
They noted "This little planet has a lot of water on the surface, water vapor in its atmosphere, oxygen in its atmosphere, a tilt to its axis of rotation, giving it seasons - it might be capable of supporting intelligent life."
So they sent an exploratory mission to Earth to hunt for intelligent life. They landed in Norman, Oklahoma, found no evidence of intelligent life, and went back home.
