Southern is 2-4. They play in the SWAC. They've lost all of their games against P5 opponents this year, including a 53 pts loss on Thursday to unranked Oregon St. They are so bad that they passed the Bill Fennelly "cupcake smell test" for non-conf. scheduling (Iowa St's 2nd game this season). Vic could probably let one of the student equipment folks coach this game and we'd be fine. Especially because they'd probably play Sonya for at least 30 mins.
I’d rather win later in the season than early but this year I wanted both. It’s hard to build a fan base when consistency isn’t there. Lots of people wanting to experience the Moody are going to be one and done and that’s a shame. It’s a great venue full.
She didn’t come out to watch warmups Friday but did right before tip-off. Maybe you don’t recognize her she’s probably wearing glasses
Loving Andrea Lloyds commentary and overall summation on the teams troubles and ills. Great description of Morris and Gonzales play to this point. Hopefully some of the posters on here with their Vic needs to be doing this" or " Vic needs to be doing that" will just chill and let this season play out. Before the season started on one of these boards I stated we would have a similar record to last season. This was before Harmon going out. The sky is not falling.
Great overall effort. Rori makes everyone better, but especially Gonzales and Morris. We currently have five players not suiting up. I wonder what’s up with each. I know Taylor is day to day with back. Do we know the story with Masudi, Codio, the new walk-on (not sure of name) and especially Hunter?
Codio is redshirting this year. She tore her ACL again this summer so she’ll be out rehabbing longer than usual. I’d say about a year for her. Nobody knows with Hunter and the rest are just behind the depth chart.
Great win and much needed. Very happy to see Gonzales slowly but surely getting used to Vic’s system. We are by far from where we are going to be but each game we are making progress. This reminds me of Vic’s first season here at Texas. All he needs is to get his full team healthy for a consistent amount of time and we’ll be just fine. I don’t expect this team to hit its stride until mid to end of big 12 play depending on everyone’s health.
Absolutely agree. Vic has been extremely successful with his style of play. You just can’t expect him to change for a player. Which player do you change for? Does everyone play a game more suited for Morris? For Gonzales? For Moore? Nope. The players all come together based on what the coach wants. And Vic wants an extra pass (or more) on offense and lock down D full court. The only thing that makes Vic happier than fast break points is forcing a shot clock violation on the other end.
Ridiculous! I just sent off a note to John Bianco and copied CDC: Hi John, Every year, for most of the post-game press conferences, we write you and say, "Please give a mike to the reporters! We can't hear the questions!" And then you provide them with a mike they can pass around. And then, over time over the season, this gets forgotten and we're back to trying to figure out what the question was based on the answer. Today's post game WBB conference was the worst I've ever heard. Do you check the audio before you release it? [link to youtube video] It wasn't until the 5:50 portion of the 8:44 recording that the volume was finally turned up on the recording!
Today was such a good game that Vic didn't have to take off his jacket or stomp his foot. Three distinct times he was so pleased with the play of his players he did clapped, which is rare. He does this in an odd way, he has his program notes rolled up in his left fist and then he claps by hitting the top of his left fist with the palm of his right hand. He did this only with defensive stops like when we forced a shot clock violation and he was especially pleased with Deyonna when she was fighting for the ball underneath the Southern goal and got fouled. He pulled her out and made an effort to tell her he liked what she was doing there.
And once again…nobody criticized Vic or questioned his style. We discussed it and the obvious difficulties this team has had so far. Whether you realize it or not, EVERY great coach does adjust to his or her players’ strengths and weaknesses to maximize productivity individually and collectively as a team. Did you also notice that we did not run the dribble drive every possession? It’s not very effective against zones. So Vic is absolutely diversifying his approach and it was obvious in many areas. Please keep in mind how bad the competition was today. We still have a long way to go. Very encouraging to see Shaylee and Sonya play so well. Any time you lose as many key pieces as we did, either through graduation or portal, the coach does indeed have to adjust to the new talent as well. Vic has clearly stated that the responsibility is on him to get it right and that’s why so many of us respect him. Unlike a certain previous coach who repeatedly blamed players, he has never done that and totally owns his responsibility in the process. It’s not a one way street…
I got a quick response from John Bianco: Thanks for your note, copying Caten Hyde with our creative team to answer the question about audio from today’s event. He and his crew shoot this and they do utilize LHN’s feed, which provides wireless mic’s for press conferences that they carry live - which is currently only football. At this time, it’s not something we’ve been able to do that in other football/all sports availabilities. Hyde then responded on the same email thread: Thanks for your feedback. There was an issue with the audio cable from Bevo Video Productions at today’s press conference. As with all technology, it happens from time to time. I apologize for the inconvenience and it was addressed with them earlier today.
You're right. Yours is a voice of reason. But doesn't everybody at least sometimes question any coach's decisions? I am too much of a critic, even if I don't really know anything, to have a few thoughts of my own. I agree that Andrea is really insightful and gives a lot of good perspective on the team. (But I bet she also has thoughts at times that she can't express on the air).
Hmm. Wasn’t aware I said anyone criticized anyone. In fact, I’m pretty sure I was agreeing with someone. But if you actually go back and read earlier posts you might see why I posted what I did. But… “once again”…you do you.
Vic was obviously answering a question about Taylor's status at the end when he said "It's kinda another stress deal" and she'll be evaluated weekly. Taylor had an IG story up for a short time yesterday that (if I remember correctly) said something like needing to be patient when it was hard to understand things that were part of God's plan. Maybe someone here remembers it better than me? But my concern was that she was getting concerned about the injury keeping her sidelined for awhile.
