    Hey All,

My son is a student here. I'm planning to bring the rest of my family to meet up and attend the Jan. 14th game with Tech. First time to see Moody and am not at all familiar with the layout. Looked at the seating diagram but can't tell what's upper and lower. For those of you who are regulars, what would be your recommendations for good seat location. Would like to have a decent view but don't need to be close enough to do any actual coaching. Would also appreciate any input on best places to park and nice hotels.

Lastly, County Line was a good place to go for ribs back in the 70's when I was here. Is that still the case?

Thanks in advance, and Hook 'em.

Nothing wrong with County Line, but you might want to try one of these places for BBQ:

Green Mesquite: the one just South of the river, near the Old Armadillo World HQ site and not far from the Original Chuys. Good smoked meats, Austin-freaky waitresses, and sometimes they have live music at night. Overlooked by many of the experts because there's more than one of these.

Franklins: good smoky meat, super popular with long lines sometimes.

Stubbs: an old-line bbq joint; been around for many decades; in addition to the usual stuff, they also smoke lamb.

Stubbs was 1 of the best BBQ joints ever...when it was in Lubbuttock. Mr. Stubbs was on premise at all times when the resturaunt was open. He personally oversaw the cooking & made the sauce himself with whatever was "on the island." It was never the exact same twice, but was ALWAYS fabulous.

When Mr. Stubbs moved to Austin & sold the "rights" to his name brand, the recipe was standardized & it, IMHO sucks. Went from being 1 of the best to only slightly better than Appleby's (maybe).

Too bad for Lubbuttockites, Stubbs was one of the ONLY benefits to living there at that time. Last time I moved to Lubbock, one of the 1st things I did was drive out to E. Broadway only to find that Mr. Stubbs establishment was shuttered...moved to Austin. I was sorely disappointed. Even more disappointed next time I was in Austin and ate @ Stubbs. Not the same...only a ghost of the former self...only slightly better than Appleby's (maybe).

Last time I ate at Stubbs was in the 1990s. It was good. It's still around after all these decades. They must be doing something right.

My #1 recommendation remains Green Mesquite. It will never make Texas Monthly list, but it's still my favorite Austin BBQ.

Did you ever eat @ Stubbs in Lubbock? Light years better than Stubbs Austin. Not sure exactly when Mr. Stubblefield sold his resturaunt, but when he did, it changed & not for the better. In Lubbock it was the best BBQ I ever tasted. Mr. Stubblefield is no longer with us (que Descanse en Paz) & his establishment is a ghost of its former self. He used to have a sign in his place in Lubbock, "No Loud Talk or Bad Talk in This Establishment" & he was always around to back that up. He was quite a gentle giant gentleman.

So I take it that it was good, right?

I recall it was above average. I didn’t have a choice. They had an arrangement with the hall. I certainly recall it was a good price.

George Bailey No beans in my chili, thank you

Moody is a great basketball venue. But it sucks for concerts, the acoustics in there just aren't good. I don't think there's a bad seat in the place. I prefer the lower seats in the upper section but that's just my preference.

Green Mesquite and Terry Black's, both on Barton Spring's, are my fav BBQ joints. I'd like to try Franklin's some time but I just don't do lines. Pinthouse Pizza on South Lamar makes a good pie, and I REALLY like their brews.

Hello Mr. George Bailey. I am happy to learn about all the awesome bbq venues but what I really am needing is Moody guidance. When you say "lower seats in the upper section" can you identify the section numbers? To everyone else, Thank You! and we will certainly not go hungry.

I'm not sure about section numbers. But it's the section above where the students are seated. Sorry if I'm not much help there. But just put yourself in a meat coma before you go, seats won't matter then.

I have season tickets for women’s basketball in section 104, across from the players benches, mid-court is approximately in the middle of the row of my section.

    Arena Maps - Moody Center
There is level 100 and level 200. For basketball, level 200 is closed. The seats closer to the floor in Sections 102-112 are The Corral (student seating for most games, during the semester break they sold these as GA). Section 105-109 by the floor is the Germania Club section which gets you in to the exclusive Germania club on the floor level. Section 105-109 gets you access to the Dell Technologies Club and Section 117-121 gets you into the Indeed Club.

    Phil,

The difference in price between Moody and other Texas facilities is that the company that paid the $375 million to build Moody gets the concessions there. The other facilities are controlled by the athletic department and Chris was hellbent on lowering those and keeping them down.

Not for UT Athletic events. Concerts and such are a different story, separate contracts apparently, I heard rumors about $40 for a double shot of vodka and soda during a concert

I went to the UT men’s basketball game tonight against Kansas State, disappointed in the outcome of the game, but the venue is outstanding and all the prices are reasonable, I happen to get lucky with fancy seats so that helped.

My German grandfather went there many moons ago. 1920s or 30s?
