IMO the football management at Denver is very poor. That starts with John Elway. HOF QB, sure. But think Peter Principal as the President of Football Operations.

Aside from the coaching carousel, their selection of Russell Wilson - and what they gave up to acquire him — is Jerrah-esque. Anybody who follows the game closely could see that Wilson’s best days were well behind him as they watched Seattle last year. He had become a liability.

His ineptitude in Denver was absolutely predictable. Not sure what the heck Elway and his GM were thinking. True, Elway brought in Peyton Manning at the end of his career and won a Super Bowl, but that was Peyton Manning, and he had a team around him.

I wouldn’t expect much out of Denver as long as Elway is involved in affecting the personal decisions. That is, unless they get lucky and find the next John Allen beyond the first round.

North Texas will hire longtime Dallas-Fort Worth High School coach Justin Owens as the new director of recruiting, sources tell Rivals.

Under new head coach Eric Morris, North Texas placed an early emphasis on recruiting the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and the hiring of Owens, aka Coach O, reflects that agenda early on at Denton.

Owens, who has served as a running backs coach, special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Ferris High School for the past two years, has a long history as a coach and evaluator at the Metroplex.

His football career began as an offensive lineman at Dallas Kimball, where he graduated in 1999. He then played at Cisco Junior College and West Texas A&M before graduating in 2004.

His coaching career began at Dallas Spruce after college as an offensive line coach from 2004 to 2007 before being named offensive coordinator in 2008. Owens then served as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Dallas Madison from 2009-10 before returning to his alma mater at Kimball as offensive coordinator from 2010-12. His last stint in his early coaching stint was at Prime Prep, where he served as offensive line coach from 2013-2014.

I think Elway left when the Waltons took over.

Thanks. I was not aware. I wonder who orchestrated the trade for Wilson. Basically they mortgaged the franchise for a few years, and accelerated Seattle’s return to relevance.

If I recall correctly, by the time the Wilson trade came about Slash was basically a figurehead and the GM at the time did the deal.

He built a top-level program at Arlington Martin. I believe he came from New England to Texas to coach in a state that cared a lot about HS football.

He did have one of the biggest high schools in the state to work with. Still, plenty of HS coaches have that sort of advantage and never get it done. He got it done and was a program builder at a very high level. (General Burnside had all the advantages General Grant had, but he just didn't get it done)

This may help NU somewhat in recruiting DFW, although I don't see them re-establishing the sort of cherrypick-the-best sort of scenario they used to have in their glory days. They may nab a few 4 stars a year from Texas, a few more from California, and get a bunch of Midwestern guys. But they're just not the national brand they used to be. UT stomped that program (NU) into the sod.

The predictable reaction is displeasure. It will always be because change is disruptive.

Let’s see who Sark hires. Might be an upgrade, we just don’t know.

Let me add that maybe the new WR coordinator can help Worthy with his football catching skills…and I’m not being funny.

Those can be a problem, but they’re not nearly as bad as pre-Madonnas. (Debra Harry, Pat Benatar, etc)

Some randomness on the WR coaching search...

    - rumor on IT that Sark wants Emmett Jones from Texas Tech

    - TFB saying Sark anticipated Marion departing and has talked to Ra'Shaad Samples this week, but is also looking at Justin Johnson from Baylor

    - a outside-of-the-box name mentioned is well-known WR trainer Margin Hooks, who played with Sark at BYU and has trained guys like Evan Stewart

Emmett Jones - Football Coach - Texas Tech Red Raiders

    Ha!

And I was just joking after the meltdown TT fans had back when we poached Beard. And here we are again: we might actually poach another Tech coach!

Samples is a knock out recruiter and young coach. He would be my first choice with Jones next.

Wasn't Samples an ace DFW area recruiter here...?

(I could be mixing him up with someone else...?)
