David Crosby Has Died

I'm late to the party on reporting this - he died Jan. 20th IIRC, at 81.

Iconic 60's rocker. Interesting, very flawed guy and life to say the least. Founding member of the Byrd's (on my Rock Mt. Rushmore) and Crosby Stills & Nash. Was known to be hard to get along with. Is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with those 2 groups.

Sperm donor to Melissa Ethridge and her wife - had 2 sons by him. Crosby got busted in 1982 by the Dallas Police for drugs and a weapon in a nightclub. I was living in North Dallas at the time and remember it being a big deal in the news. He did a year or two in prison I think.

Long time drug use and booze took a toll on his liver - had a transplant and got hepatitis but the liver bought him some time.

I had some of his solo work back in the early 70's. Here is a tune I liked from his album: If only I could remember my name.

 

Very weird guy, and I despised his politics. However, he was a great talent and put out of a lot of great music for many years - with the Byrds, CSNY, and on his own. He'll be missed.

 

He always seemed to me bitter and angry.

 

I suspect that he often was. He was a bit of a mess. Lots of drugs, skanks, and got into quite a bit of trouble. By contrast, Keith Richards, who might have been an even bigger mess (though I've heard him says he was never as bad as his reputation), always seems kinda cheery.

 

Yeah. Crosby was a weird duck, sometimes anti-social, admittedly a politically liberal dude, sober or otherwise. I did not care for his public persona or troubles back in the day.

I do however appreciate his significant music contributions to the Byrds, CSN & CSN&Y, plus solo efforts... that is where it ends....

 

After some years of reading, I believe CROSBY by himself drove Neil Young away from CSN&Y. Bad for the group but good for Neil.

Young had a great solo career. I'm not a fan of Young's Lib politics but I do like his work over the years. HARVEST and a f/u Harvest album are 2 of my favs from him back in the day...

 

I worked with some people who had been a CO at the intake facility...once the mustache was shaved and he got his 'high and tight' haircut, they said he looked like a chomo...

As I recall, he did all of his stay at what was then the Diagnostic Unit in Huntsville. His receive date and parole were in '86 and my career didn't start until mid-87.

 

Good music. I won't miss him. I never hung around him, and when was the last time he put out music? What's to miss?

My daughter had to go up to Boston for business this week. She gets in line for the gestapo, but unfortunately the guy in front of her was Steven Tyler with (her words) "his twenty-two bodyguards & eight hundred cameras". Said it took a while for him to get all the jewelry off.

I have a big picture of you holding the plane for a guy that takes t wo hours to clear security.
