Not if it means Rori getting killed. How many times does she have to get knocked flat for a foul to get called?

I don't think think anyone knew what to expect from OSU. Hoyt did a great job in the portal. Without the transfers they got they they would be down at the bottom with tech and tcu. They also lose a lot after this year just like blowu. They'll have to have another good portal year to continue the be at this level.

 

I thought that crew did an OUTSTANDING job calling the game. They maintained that fine line between letting the teams play and not letting things get carried away. That's the way WBB should be called.

 

That is the one stat that drives me crazy!

 

Charges are a part of basketball and calling for the player leading the team in charges taken to not take any is not really a winning strategy. You can tell by the reaction of the entire team that charges are highly valued. And why wouldn’t they be? Not only is the opposing player given a foul, any score negated, but it’s a turnover.
I get the concern about how important Rori is to the team, but what else in her game do you want to take away? No more hard drives to the basket? She takes a beating doing that too sometimes flying through the air. Pretty darn sure that Rori, Vic and the entire coaching staff know what they’re doing and you just can’t play D1 basketball with faint of heart and less than 100% effort.
And guess what? Rori will be taking charges in the WNBA someday as well. Is just a part of the game. She’s going to give you 100% on the court, she’s a fierce and competitive player and wouldn’t have it any other way.

 

You know for the men's game, they'll have backups ready to go. Because, you know, they're more important.

 

Most players who take a charge do NOT smack their heads on the court like Audrey Warren was wont to do. The concern over injury is overblown. Personally, I was far more worried about the elbow to the face than the charges Rori took.

 

Wow, what a great "put down" post. According to you, everyone on this board that has opinions which differ from yours is ridiculous, uneducated, old and otherwise wrong in their opinions. Yep, I fall within one of your categories and I do take it personally because it is wrong for you judge folks as if you are the only person who knows anything. You do sound knowledgeable, but your opinion is not the only one that matters. It would be nice if you would only critique the team instead of the folks that participate in this forum. First, we see the refs whistle to stop a play because they note that the shot clock didn't move. They try to fix it and then on the second try, the whistle again because the shot and/or the game clock isn't moving.

Then, we notice that the Texas-side clocks above the basket are just gone. Black. And then they try to get it going and then it works, and then it doesn't. And then they try to bring the large old floor clocks online. Then they decide that it's less than 2 minutes let's try to play through it. And then they have the announcer counting down the shot clock over the speakers! And as they're doing this, it's still not right and Texas loses possession due to the shot clock violation with a working clock on the OSU-side bucket. What was frustrating was I was watching the shot clock and I saw it go 8-7-6-4-3-2. Wait, what happened to 5! And when Texas was whistled for the shot clock violation, the shot clock facing the players on top of the basket said "3" but the shot clock to the side of the bucket said "0". And the Texas players were like, "Hey, we still have time". The refs were like, "Play ball! Let's go!"

Halftime they had guys trying to figure it out. And then they couldn't. At one point, they had this out on the scorer's table:

Then, they pulled it away and put each of this on opposite sides of each other


And even then, it took them a while to try to get it set up on the play-by-play side and I think they asked Andrea to manually push the buttons on the back to update the score! (you see her head in the picture above)

And then I guess on the corners you had this:

Some players on both teams in the post game comments said the clock didn't affect the play. I found they started playing with more hesitation as they had to slow down and look up at the old clocks, ooops! They're out and then look to the floor clocks to see how much time they had left.

Before they went to the floor clocks, they had the Texas-side clocks working, but obviously for fairness, they turned it off so that both sides had to use the floor clocks. The displays at mid-court did not keep time, just the score.

 

Cynt, I share your concern about Rori. She is so important to the team and we know what happened in the past when she was unavailable. I steady myself now with the belief that Shaylee and Sonja are much more familiar and comfortable with Vic's system and can handle the ball and play more effectively than at the beginning of the season. I think there have been several games where Texas had a big enough lead that the two of them could have handled play and given Rori a rest. I've seen lots of other teams pull their stars and I don't think the coach or staff have been criticized for doing so.

 

Hard disagree. I will never give kudos to an officiating crew that allows this sequence of events to happen:
1) Team A player drives into the paint, gets displaced and knocked to the ground. Basket goes in. No Call.
2) Team A ON THE VERY NEXT PLAY is defending 30 feet from the basket and gets whistled for a touch foul.

That is piss poor officiating in my book and exactly what happened after Rori was knocked to the ground. I don't care if Team A is Texas or a team I hate. That **** goes on far too often in the women's game and any officiating crew that does it, is terrible.

 

Just because others have opinions that differ from your yours, that does not make their opinions "uneducated". That garbage comment makes you sound like someone who believes they are always the smartest person in the room; you're not.

Rori was injured to start the season. So, obviously, her health should be of concern to all as the season progressed. Rori took quite the spill late in the game at Baylor. Rori's health again was of concern. If we had more depth at PG, she would get more minutes of rest throughout a game.

If Rori has to play all 40 minutes in 3 consecutive games in 3 days in the Big 12 tournament, we won't be winning it. And, unlike other conferences who hold their tournaments one week earlier, Rori and her teammates won't get the benefit of an extra week of rest prior to the NCAA tournament.

 

Do you have data or links which support or substantiate that comment?

Can you prove that "guarantee"? Have you spoken with Rori directly?

 

We can all take isolated plays and point out where the refs got it wrong... they're not going to get it perfect any more than the players or coaches are. But I stand by my opinion that overall they called a really good game. Unless, of course, you're one of those who prefers to see the whistle blown every fkng 13 seconds. I'll take last night's crew any day over some of the other SH*T we've gotten previously.

 

I liked the officiating last night as well.

Something bothers me (in general) about the way refs call fouls on Faye and fouls on Faye. It just seems to me she’s on a very short leash by the refs every single game but I often feel when she’s on offense she gets mauled and there’s no call. I share the exact exasperation she appears to have and feel for her.

I’m sure I’m wrong and looking through burnt orange glasses, but it just seems she gets the double standard treatment often. I suppose it could be she’s fouling more with her body than I’m seeing. She could really have some special games if she could stay on the court.

 

Game stories are appearing in my news feeds and on texassports.com as "RV Texas women's basketball .." What is this - a computer quirk or a ranking of some sort?

And, pondering rankings: I've concluded that voters/Charlie probably don't watch many or any Big12 games. They've not noticed new, young coaches at Wva, OSU and OU that have made the league so competitive ... IMHO. Putting my trust in the committee. (And in our ability to maintain/increase our current relatively high level of play. )

 

RV means receiving votes. I.e. You are not in the top 25, but you were on at least one ballot.

 

Honestly... Hadi has not quite perfected some things that get her called for fouls, such as that additional last split-second movement that she sometimes commits when attempting to take a charge or set a pick. Also, seh often seems a bit out of control, which cause an official lean towards blowing the whistle. I know these things are very minute and subtle, but they really can make a huge difference. Once Hadi cleans these little things up maybe it won't be so rough for her with the officating.

My isolated plays have happened on more than one occasion by members of this same crew. In addition, it was piss poor at the end of the first half to have the PA announcer countdown the shot clock and then ignore him to call a shot clock violation on what was very obviously a malfunctioning shot clock. But by all means continue to heap praise on the three stooges. For the record, I am absolutely not one of those people that want fouls called on every possession. That type of officiating is worse. It does not mean I want to settle and laud the efforts of the crew last night.

 

In the Big 12 tournament last year Rori played 35 minutes against OSU, all 45 minutes of the OT win against ISU and 40 minutes against Baylor to win the Big 12 Championship and be named MVP.

 

After watching the game again, this is me continuing to laud and heap praise on an officiating crew that allowed the women to play and didn’t whistle every 20 seconds in anticipation of a foul. If it’s a foul, call it. If you’re not sure, don’t. And for the love of God, contact does not equal foul.

I am absolutely certain there was a direct correlation between the lack of calls and the higher shooting percentages. The women were allowed to play!

I liked the refs in the OSU game. They aren't perfect, but they also weren't 6 vs 30 free throws awful. They were letting them play. On one play, we had the ball and nudged one of the OSU players who flopped onto her back while everyone else was heading down the court in a hurry. The ref just shook her head, as a message to the other refs that it wasn't whistle-worthy.

There's one male ref we call the "traveling ref" who aggressively looks to call traveling. That guy, drives me crazy.

 

I can't stand the ref's that constantly call ridiculous touch fouls. And Texas seems all to often to be on the wrong end of those. I also can't stand the ref's that allow our players to be mauled and abused and them after a while they realize they haven't called a foul in a long time and call a foul on Deyona for breathing on another player.

 

I have to agree with WCBBNUT and brnkj about the officiating. It has been so frustrating to watch a game where the women are trying to play basketball (a physical sport) only to be interrupted because someone touched someone else. It's almost like the refs think that's not ladylike, or something. The OSU game flowed well (er, except for one notable issue). They were allowed to play and all of my frustration was focused on defensive lapses, rather than intrusive calls. I hope we get these ladies again.

 

And, she did not start her freshman season with a toe injury which kept her out of several games like happened this season.

 

Which means she should have more stamina with 5 less games played this season. Last I heard, Rori is 100% since the injury so I’m not exactly sure what you are trying to say when you say we can’t win the tournament if Rori plays 40 minutes per game which she basically did last year. You also referred to rest in the post i responded to. Where’s your data to back that up?

 

I definitely respect your right to have your own opinion about the officiating, even though I couldn't give a rat's *** whether it aligns with mine or not. Last night's crew was far better than that **** crew we had in Stillwater that made those "carrying" calls and failed to call an obvious offensive foul (plays that BTW cost us dearly), and most of the other crews we've had.

 

Are you kidding me? Her missing the first 5 games means she should have "more stamina" the rest of the season? If that's what you believe, you should text all the head coaches out there telling them to purposely not play several of their superstars in random games throughout the season so they'll have "more stamina" late in the season. Let me know how they respond to that suggestion.

Where did you "hear" that Rori was "100% since the injury"? From Rori or Coach Schaefer? Just because a player is "good to go" and plays does not mean they are 100% healthy.

If there's a college player out there who averages 40 minutes a game (not including any OT games), I'd love to know their names.

 

No I’m not kidding but you’re not making sense to me and I can see you refuse to reason about it. Commentators who have talked to Vic & Rori mentioned she was 100%. Less games indeed do mean less wear and tear on the body so go ahead and act like I’m crazy I don’t give a damn. We’ll have to agree to disagree.
