Why did he wait? Why didn't he ask right after Beard was fired?

Why did the thread title change to thanks Beard? Is Holland going to Ole Miss now?

Ole Miss doesn't make sense to me. It's likely he's a one and done, and I don't care who's the new coach they're not going from 3-15 in the SEC to FF contender in a year. They've picked up one decent player in the portal and none of the remaining uncommitted players are considering Ole Miss.

Doesn't make sense unless the only thing he cares about is $.

I think the point may be that the roster would not have fallen apart and Holland would still be in the fold if Beard had made better choices and was still the head coach.

Maybe or maybe not. Kids all over the country are asking out of their obligation and going somewhere else. It's really hard to read these players minds.

I did not realize there were that many kids wanting out of their NLI.

Beard is a great recruiter of talent, but hasn’t always been a great retainer of talent. So in this wacky world of NIL, all bets would be off even if Beard had kept his hands to himself.

Regardless of how you phrase Beard, he won on his own. Our new guy has not and now we have lost both top recruits. One makes sense for the NBA but the other doesnt. Like some of you have said, behind the scenes recruiting or negative comments caused this since Holland isnt going pro. Every team would love to have him so he will get paid for sure!!!

But RT made it clear he was a big reason these guys came or signed. No point in blaming Beard now.

    Will he be released?

Normally, very against holding students hostage. But, I really think the way this was handled is in poor taste. I'm sure there's more to this story, though.

It is up to the new coach to recruit and retain talent, do not blame the coach that is longer here. As for better choices, we are where we are because of the poor choice made by the UT administration to fire Beard.

Beard made the choice knowing what would happen to him.

In the world we live in today, the UT Administration had no choice.

HA HA HA Hoggies - you didn't get him either! They tampered and didn't get the guy anyway. Love it.

Personally, I have no interest in 5 Star MBB recruits anymore. Too much drama and problems with roster management. They can all go to the G League for all I care, where a large majority of them will quickly learn they made a bad decision.

Some guys don't need to be in college. Is Holland one of those? I have no idea if he is a good enough student to succeed at Texas or any other decent college. But if this is one of his personal challenges then he probably made the right decision to take the pro money now instead of a year or two down the line.

Probably best he went G-League. Academics (yes what academics) would have been a struggle even for a high-profile basketball guy like Holland.

Agree with ATX to a degree - spending capital on MBB 5-Stars probably isn't the best for the school or the player.

If this was 2003 and he was coming out of Duncanville HS, he'd probably be a top-5 pick.

I know it can't happen because basketball is set up so differently from baseball especially with the International option, but with the NBA having a legitimate minor or developmental league, it would be nice if college basketball could go to a system similar to college baseball.

I'm not sure how it would work since a player could go the international route at any time and there is nothing that could be done there. But at least as far as the NBA and G-League, a player could go to either out of High School, but if they sign and accept a scholarship then they cannot go to either one of those for (ideally 3 years but no way they could get that through) so two years. No one and done in college ball. Not sure it would make any difference with the portal, and the wild wild west that is cbb recruiting out of h.s. and portal. I assume that it is not the ncaa that would do this but through the collective bargaining agreement between the nba and players union and I guess the G-league. As I said, given the nature of basketball now this would most likely be an exercise in futility.

I would love to see the end of one and done in college ball, but even if that happened the portal would allow a transfer after one year, so it would look just the same from the school's point of view. You noted that issue in your post too. The reality is that the players have the power while the schools, coaches, and fans are screwed if they wish to watch a kid develop and grow over a career

Unless they put the sit out a yr into this equation then its just a further slide down the slope. The money is no longer under the table, its just straight paying of the athletes with no boundaries. Not good for college sports in my opinion.

How much money will he likely get?

Minimum for the G-League is $40K, but that's with zero added on for incentives, endorsements, 2-way deals, etc. If he ever made the 15-man roster for an NBA team, the minimum is something like $87K.

The guys I've talked to who work in the Texas Legends promotions department said that pretty much everyone is paid the minimum plus incentives (get in at least 50% of the games and it doubles the salary or whatever). And they get a ton for their likenesses on the ads... that big Indian guy (Satnam Singh) was still living off of his NBA draft bonus several years later and making something obscene for the real estate ads and building supply ads in the arena... $15K-20K per ad.
