OU is bummed they missed out on another chance to cheat. They got cheated. The consolation is they were under probation when it all went down so there is always that. Don't worry, cheaters, you will be again one day.

watched marcus dupree on espn last night. my wife happened to watch it with me. when marcus' mother asked for and received the double-wide, my wife went crazy. she couldn't believe that ou would do that. i told her that was nothing compared to some of the things that have happened at ou. i think her dislike for ou just increased by an order of magnitude.

Starchild, that was a pretty good movie I thought as well. I shows many folks that we don't just exaggerate about blOwU just for the fun of it. They truly are a renegade program throughout history.

Starchild, I did the same exact thing with my gf last night (a TCU grad) and I think she had the same realization. [IMG]

it is a very good documentary, and it is truly eye-opening to people like your girlfriend and my wife. my wife wouldn't have believed me if she hadn't seen that last night. ou sucks for a lot of reasons, and that documentary definitely highlighted some of the reasons.

ou would have certainly paid more than $200K for cam if they hadn't been dealing with their own ncaa problems at the time. [IMG]

as i mentioned on another thread. if he had came to OU we wouldn't even hear about this story. no one would have had anything to gain by the story because he would be backing up landry jones unfortunately. not because he isn't a better qb, but because that is the way we do it.

hate to derail the thread, but stoops has only changed starting qbs for performance twice. paul thompson after his first start and loss against tcu. jason white/nate hybl, but that one was given back.

anyway, football aside. i'm really glad he didn't come here. it was really more about us and auburn, and not MSU. which means one of the following happened IMHO.

    1. We didn't offer cash
    2. We didn't ensure the starting qb job.
    3. We didn't do both
    4. He thought Auburn was a better opportunity.
    5. Auburn offered cash.
    6. Auburn ensured him the starting qb.
    7. Auburn did both.

i'm trying not to be naive here. But it seems to me as talented as he is, it is possible the potential for national attention at OU or Auburn...and the subsequent NFL money that would follow if he was successful at either school this and next year, might have outweighed the signing bonus schools like MSU were offering.

and as far as us not offering cash. since i am sure loop and a couple others probably got a chuckle of me listing that as a reason.... i really believe we do not do that anymore. i know it still happens. bomar, peterson car, all suspicious stuff. not huge, like back in the day... but still serious.

as ohio state rb robert smith stated, if you want that stuff, it is available. he said he never received anything during his time at OSU (early 90's era) but that it definitely went on, and that if you wanted to find... you would. simple as that. does that surprise anyone?

if extras are a big priority, even the bomar gig (no show job) is small potatoes when competing with some of the SEC schools.

I know we didn't assure the starting job, even though surely he would have beaten out landry eventually. if not, we have the worst coaches ever. but i know he wouldn't be promised a position. in fact, i feel more confident in that, than i do that someone didn't at least listened to a cash request.

i believe auburn did offer the opportunity to start at qb. in their system, with that OC, that is a better offer than MSU and 100K in cash if you ask me. did they offer cash? it wouldn't surprise me, but i don't think it would be a blatant thing where chizick knew anything about it. he might have gotten something, but i think most of that type of stuff goes on behind the backs of the administrations. just opinions. i don't have any other information than anybody else. just looking at he possible scenarios and trying to determine what are the most likely.

i acknowledge these possibilities, because MSU was never REALLY in this thing. money is the only way he was going to go there, and auburn and us could simply offer a real shot at the type of success he is having now. and we could offer more cash. MSU couldn't do both.

obviously, it is just guesses. but even if we all offered cash. i'm still not sure the coaches and administration knew.. boosters, agents, and friends have a way helping this stuff happen "outside" the workings of the administration. i believe that is the way it is done today. i did back in dupree's day too, but barry knew, mccartney knew, sherrill knew... even osbourne knew, but i would be surprised if he wasn't insulated like the situation i talk about above.

the 30 for 30 was good. i was young, so there were a few things in there i didn't know. what a freaking amazing talent. a couple of highlights from a sooner fan.

    1. who knows what it cost us to get him.
    2. it seems that he had cash offers from a LOT of schools. you would have to assume that all the usual suspects had something to offer.... ole miss, tennesee, bama, msu, etc.
    3. in the end it was three teams.... texas, oklahoma, and southern miss. do any of you think that we were the only one offering offering something out of those three? not saying you or southern miss did. just after watching the whole thing and the constant theme of his recruiting i really don't think money was a biggest factor in his decision.

if it was, then the top three likely would have been something like: ole miss, any SEC school, ohio state, etc. he had over a 100 offers. that means every cheating school in the nation offered him. yet he chooses a final three that included southern miss ( a school that couldn't outbid any of the othe big programs if that was the priority) and texas. texas is obvoiulsy one of the best programs of all time. no question. but you all were on top of the world at that time either. and yes, i know akers had some good teams.

so what does that so about you? it seems that every major program in the nation with a tradition rich in football AND cheating tried to get him. do you think he thought texas was so freaking awesome that it was the one school (since southern miss and OU are assumed to have made a deal) that didn't play the game? i know you think highly of your program. so do i. i don't believe you all were real active in the "game" being played in those days, at least among your peers. but, i'm also not a ******* idiot and neither are you.

all that said, we did provide the double wide. i'm sure he was given other things... .cash, maybe a car, hell.. how was he flying back and forth all the time (they mentioned his trips home a few times)? none of that really surprises me. but if you watched the whole thing you heard him mention that he was upset that "so and so" was getting this (implying benefits) and "so and so" is getting an apartment etc.

so on the one hand, he implicated the widespread illegal benfits being handed out (no secret), but at the same time said he wasn't really getting that. or at least not as much as others. which to me, means there wasn't a setup system that so many people, including myself, thought was in place for all stars at OU. i guess, just like robert smith said, you'll find it if you want to. and back then at OU, it seems like you would have had to try NOT to find it. but maybe not as clear and absurdly easy as i imagined.

so i didn't come here to defend OU. our record speaks for itself. and i didn't come here to accuse texas, your record speaks for itself. i just wanted to raise a few points that maybe some hornfans might have overlooked depending on the level of bias you started from.

i won't say that 'everyone' was doing it. but according to dupree, everyone was doing it for him.

Let's not facts get in the way. From Dupree's comments on ESPN's website regarding Ken Fairly's accusations:

"In the film, Fairley claims Dupree told him he never wanted to go to OU in the first place. And he accuses the Sooners of giving Dupree's mom a double-wide trailer.
"None of that was true," countered Dupree, who in the film suggests Fairley as his agent later stole money from him, then got him involved in several law suits. "His whole interview was basically a lie."

I think the s-o-o-n-e-r-s around here have gotten their panties in a bunch. OUE, of course we're going to razz you... that's what rivalries are for! Besides, have you seen this message board so far? It's practically the off season for a bunch of our fans so what better to do in the off season than poke fun at Sooners?

while cheating has happened everywhere, ou is the poster child. that legacy will never die. it would be like asking people to remember oj as just the football player--it ain't gonna happen.

    Non sequiter,

While I do not say that UT never cheats, that is the same old tired argument that OU always rolls out. "Well, everyone else is doing it!"

The history of cheating by OU occurred in all their NC's with the exception of the last one (I hope).

OU cheated because they had to to become on the same level as UT. Bud had businessmen come to him and offer cash to players because Oklahoma had just suffered through the "Grapes of Wrath" days and needed something to prop up the state.

Do not even need to bring up the "Bootlegger's Son" who admitted he cheated many times in his own book and interviews.

DKR, and OU All-American, quit coaching at a relatively young age because he was tired of recruits coming with his hand outstretched and he wouldn't lower himself to some of the things that were happening at OU and SWC schools.

You can deny this all you want or you can say, UT does it, but we didn't to anywhere the level that OU, SMU, A$M did it. It is like jaywalking vs. murder. They are both crimes, but at drastically different levels.

At least now, in the Internet age, it is becoming harder and harder to get away with things. So just accept your sordid past, be glad you have cleaned up quite a bit (though 3 teams are still on probation? or maybe football is off now), and be glad you can compete with UT and others on an even basis.
