I bought an HDMI cable for my HDTV recently and when I hooked up the HDMI cable to the HDMI out on my cable box and put it in the HDMI in on my tv, I am getting audio out with no other audio cables going on. I didn't realize that HDMI had audio out.

BUT it is super crappy audio and keeps breaking up. Should this happen? What I am doing wrong?

another hdmi question. i have a samsung dlp. hdmi from cable to tv. on non-hdtv channels, i get the side gray bars. no bars on hd channels.

I've tried the cable box zoom feature, but it cuts off people's heads on the screen and ****.

when I go to the tv menu for that input, I don't think I have the aspect ratio option that would fix this.

someone told me that you have to do some 4:3 override on your cable box or some such ****.

it's a TWC hd box, by the way.

Scott, I don't have the same TV as you, but on non HD channels on my tv menu I have the option to stretch the screen. But I never use it because I think it looks horrible.

by horrible, do you mean cutting off the picture and kinda making it look shittier quality too or what?

****** up thing is, I have a friend with the same set up, but he uses component cables and he doesn't have this problem and the picture doesn't look ****** up at all. i think it's the hdmi that's incapable of doing this maybe.

if you have time warner, hit the # on the remote and you can stretch such that nothing is cut off and it is just stretched from the gray bars on. but when you go to HD channels it is sitll stretched and you need to hit # again to get back to normal mode.

I have Grande, so I don't know if we have the same box (Mines a Scientific Atlanta). I'll tell you how I do it on mine.

But there is a button for "settings" or "options" or somesuch thing on the remote that if you hit it once you get a short list, and a second time you get a longer list with all the options, audio output being one of them on the longer list. Navigate to the audio output options, and select digital audio out. It's pretty easy.

Make sure your TW cable box is properly set up. With my Samsung DLP and HDMI cable, I had tell my box to only do 1080i, 720p, or 480p. Apparently it wont do 480i via HDMI.

Random Horn - How does the 480p help the picture? Does this help eliminate sidebars?

I have the Pioneer HDTV with the HDMI. I still get sidebars on a lot of channels. I'll try the 480p option. thanks.

I followed the instructions on this deal. what it does, is you hit b or whatever, then the screen may go black, then it goes back to the menu screen and tells you to hit select to add that one. then it cors in that res green.

I selected all that popped up, except the 40i or whatever the poster said.

MY ******* SIDEBARS ARE ALL GONE!!!! THERE'S NO LOST PIC FROM ZOOM OR ANYTHING.

This has been bothering me for months.

maybe I should try the same ting on my friend's plasma. he gets top and bottom bars when watching the hd channels only. this may fix it.

scottsins - So adding the 480p allows your TV to auto-size the screen correctly? You don't have to change anything on your remote? I get sidebars on non-HD channels and even on the local channels (KXAN, etc) that are HD. I stretch the screen with my remote, but it looks like ****.

For the audio question, I had a similiar issue. I called someone with massive experience and he walked me through a quick setting on the TV where I selected audio options. The factory setting was not the one I should have been using. The sound change was instant and it now sounds great.

I just tried to do this with the Scientific Atlanta boxes (one with DVR and the other without), and I got some different results. Enabling 480p widescreen eliminated the letterboxing on the regular channels, but created letterboxing on the top and bottom of my HD channels. I guess it wasn't able to automatically resize. Any help?

^^ check your settings on the cable box - with the tv and box on (like you're normally watching tv), hit the settings button on your remote to bring up the big settings list. look at the 'set: picture format' setting and make sure it's set to auto. beyond that, you've got me - I can only tell you what problems I faced with HD, HDMI, and my Samsung DLP and how I fixed them.

Like Random just mentioned, make sure the picture format on the cable box is set to Auto / HDMI. This is the step I forgot previously. After I enabled this function everything is looking good.
