Isn't tonight the Banquet dinner where we're hosting the majority of next year's class? I can't blame Muschamp for taking the job, but (if I'm right about the banquet) isn't there a better time to handle this?
Why is everyone here shocked that Muschamp accepted the job at Florida? Surely you guys can't be so naive to think that Florida wouldn't contact Muschamp for the position. The reasons Muschamp bolted are obvious: (1) he's a SEC guy; (2) Florida is obviously a top football power in that conference; (3) Muschamp gets to be a head coach NOW not later (with a big salary increase to go along with it); (4) Muschamp probably was worried about what coaches Mack would hire as replacements; and (5) he gets to leave a program with a ton of other vexing questions facing it. It’s too much of a win-win for Muschamp to pass up.
Greg Davis is sitting on his couch in his underwear with a six pack of Natural Light and a bag of Cheetos belting out a maniacal laugh.
Thanks to Coach Muschamp for all he's done for UT football, and congrats on the Florida Job...It's a no-brainer. Florida HC is a great job, big bucks, plus no drama to put up with anymore.
After the way our D played this year I am a bit surprised a program like Florida went after him for HC. Yes, our 2008 D was pretty dam good but these were not his recruits. I can give him credit for what seem to be a few good recruits on D although they haven't shown a ton yet. In a way I am kinda glad he is gone, now all the coaches (other than Mac) dont have any restriction when recruiting. I hope the pipeline doesnt stop and dont think it will as long as Brown is HC.
This is a personal opinion and I'm sure it won't be all that well received here but... I think you guys dodged a bullet. I don't have anything against Muschamp at all. However, a program like Texas (and Ohio State and USC etc) should never be handed to a guy who has never been a head coach before. Are there examples where it's worked? Sure, but there are far more where it hasn't. Anyway, just one Buckeye's opinion.
so can we tantalize Harsin with the notion that he could become the new HCIW with a good year or two of showing?
This means Mack is not going anywhere for a while and can make some changes at both OC and DC for the longhaul. Sucks to lose Muschamp but this just means Mack needs to go out and hire best DC and OC he can find with no issue of is this a Mack hire or a hire for the next HC.
What scares me is that WM and Major appear to be about the only coaches the players had any rapport with this past season. Can you imagine a scenario where Mack chooses to go outside for a new OC and WM brings Major to UF to be his new OC? I can! Long term, as long as Mack isn't going anywhere I feel okay about this, and this is probably the case. Mack has a big job ahead of himself. It's too bad Mack couldn't have trimmed the fat, so to speak, a year or two sooner.
My thoughts exactly. Florida has done this before and we all know how Zook turned out. This could be a blessing in disguise. Only time will tell.
I think Shark4 has a valid point. Going with a coordinator worked out pretty well for OU, but most of the time you are better off getting a guy with former head coaching experience (Mack, Meyer, etc.). At this point, I think Mack just needs worry about coordinators and not HCIW. That was a one time deal to keep Muschamp around a bit longer. In my opinion, the biggest question is how this affects Mack's desire to continue coaching. Does he feel somewhat relieved that there is less pressure for him to step down so we don't lose Muschamp (a bs reason although one I think was present), or is he just fed up with the whole process?
Texas is not a job for an unproven head coach or coordinator. Mack will pull in proven up and coming coordinators, and Major doesn't really have that. Rice and 'bama with Saban don't exactly qualify. The challenge for Mack is bringing in so many new coaches without hiring a dud along the way. It could take a few seasons to sort this out.
Let's get Harsin and Shannon and move forward. Both quality guys that would serve the University well.
