This is really motivating! I don't know how much Mack will allow him to do some of the things he'd like to, but if Mack does man will this be a fun offense.

I can not wait for August. Its going to be so nice to have a 3rd and 4 and not know what the play or formation is going to be.

I don't think Mack will impede anything that's successful. He didn't mind trying plays with Colt at receiver and Chiles at QB, he didn't balk at using a DT as a blocking back on the goal line.

The problem with the Chiles formation was that it didn't work. Some may put that on Chiles and be right, I'm not sure about that. I think the problem was that the approach was half-assed similar to our end around play. We always did the same thing as though merely lining up in a surprising way would shatter the minds of a defense.

I'm not an Xs and Os guy. I can recognize lack of imagination. When have we ever run an end around that was not just an end around? When we ran the Crazy Longhorn/Q formation or whatever it was called, who really believed Colt was going to be a receiver? Not much imagination.

The attitude seemed to be "we'll run this one play or two similar plays from our tricky formation and that's it." I think that attitude was GD's. Mack was fine with trying the formations, that's the strategic decision. The tactical parts of play-calling and execution fall to the coaches and players.

If Mack is still flexible enough to make these very daring hires after cleaning house of coaches that have been here for years, I think he's flexible enough let them do what they do.

This article about Harsin is indeed exciting.

There is an attitude emanating from it that I think is and has been much needed around the forty acres. Don't assume players need to be brought along slowly and eased into every new situation. Harsin's attitude seems to be that football is fun work and players can and want to be immersed and used to their full potential as fast as possible. I like that.

I tip my hat to Mack for still being able to self analyze and adapt. Not many people with long time success keep putting themselves and their operations through such tough scrutiny. He still coaches himself as well as others.

What IPLonghorn said. I've never played a down of organize football (unless intramurals counts [IMG]) and I even knew what play we were going to run at key points during the season.

Greg davis' philosophy was based on execution; it didnt really matter how you lined up if you excecuted then it would be successful. That will only work against inferior defenses. Our NC team's offense was so good that they didn't have to scheme to create mismatches, they just went right at you with vince behind that great offenive line. Remember those guys taunting defensive linemen where they were going to run it? Do you know how many formations we ran against usc? One.

That write-up / interview, pretty much summed up my take on the whole thing as I watched that entire press conference with Coach Major and "Harse."

This will be like putting Chuck Yeager in the seat of the most powerful jet aircraft ever built. Give the man the stick with the horses.... and you got a horse race.

    Harsin on the new system:

We’re going to try to put our players in the best position to be successful, and we’re going to utilize our players. I know we have good players here, and we’re going to utilize them the best way we know how in this system. I want them to have fun. I want them to enjoy coming out to practice every day – that we have something new for them. It’s creative. It’s innovative. I want them to walk up and go, “Hey, what are we doing today, coach?” I want them to be excited about that because I know if they are, we’re going to be just fine.

I'm really glad we ended up with Harson rather than Cryst. Frankly, we tried the old school, smash mouth run thing off and on for years, and were only good at it when we had Ricky and, to a lesser extent, Ced. I'm sure Cryst would have been effective (he is probably better aqt implementing and running that sort of offense than Davis), but I think Harsin will be moreso.

Plus, almost as much as winning, I want to watch fun football and be impressed/excited by the creativity of the offense. I think in this day and age you cannot expect to go 12-0 by winning every game 17 - 10. You have to be capable of hanging 40+ on anybody, because no matter how good your defense, with all of the high-powered offesnes running around these days, sooner or later someone is going to ring you up and you better be able to outscore them'

Frankly, its a little surprising Mack targeted these tow guys. It would be hard to think of two very hot OC's that are more dissimilar.

After Reading that, I actually have a concern.:

Its great that Harsin can design an offense that features so many different players in different roles and that he could do this at Boise with 2 star talent.

How will this go over here? where most of these kids were 4 and 5 star highly recruited, and well, several of them have egos, to put it kindly. I hope some of the bigger egos can handle giving up carries and catches, etc, to some 312 DT who runs at the goalline, or some 2nd string Safety who played a little HS QB whenever we need to run the triple option, etc etc...

Just sayin, seen it before at UT, infighting amongst some of the bigger egos...

We're kind of at an offensive crossroads. We can either be a school that puts guys like Jamaal Charles and Jermichael Finley in the league without regard to college results, or we could get guys to buy into a system that produces a great college dynasty. I'd have to imagine that 95% of the players would go with the latter right about now.
