This could just be professional courtesy given that new rule the NFL has in place about interviewing a minority coach.
^^^ Perhaps, but it's my understanding that the Rooney Rule only applies to the head coach position, not coordinator or other assistant coach positions.
Not good. You would think they would have picked candidates that wouldn't go for at least a year. Actually to have required it in their contract.
Hearing Tenn has raised his salary to 1.3 million. I do not see any reason to bad mouth Jerry Gray if he takes the Titan job or not, No reason. I wish him the best and i think he would be nuts not to take 1.3 million.
He shouldn't take it because he made a commitment. Not just at any school, but HIS school, where he wanted to work and retire. He could have told Mack, it is a huge raise, and it may be something I will have to consider if it comes along again in the future, but for now I will stand behind my commitment. Mack would understand that because it would not leave him in the lurch with recruits. This whole thing just feels wrong. There is a reason for that. There is such a thing as loyalty.
My random thoughts on the Jerry Gray issue. We the fan base accept when high school kids who have committed to us are encouraged to not visit other universities. We collectively say that Mack will hold their scholarship as long as they don't interview with other schools. They have given a commitment after all. Yet Jerry Gray is sending the message to the recruits that a verbal commitment means nothing and you should do what is best for you and your family (nothing wrong with this philosophy). I wonder, if it is okay for a coach on staff to ignore his commitment then why should 17 and 18 year olds be held to a higher standard? I really have no major issue with Gray interviewing but I really think Mack should cut him loose for doing it. Gray has sent the message that he is not committed to being at UT but rather will only hold this job until a higher paying job comes his way. I hope Mack told Gray to go ahead and interview but that we will be looking for his replacement.
I love where I work and all, but if someone offered me 3x what I make now, I would have to take it or face a divorce. ALL of you throwing stones would do the exact same thing, if you say otherwise, YOU are lying. Please stop with the negative comments.
Good Luck in Tenn Mr. Gray, Bring on Willie Mack Garza. Hearing it is a done deal and I cannot blame him, Yep My wife would have left me also if I turned down that kind of money, good for Jerry.
multiple sources, including burton, ketch, and memphis news folks are indicating that gray has accepted the position with the titans.
I think Horn fans will have to get use to this, when you have good coaches they will get promotions and move on. You want a coach who stays forever hire Greg Davis back.
Honor your contract or you have no honor. You got a lot of money, but no honor. Good example for the new recruits, & possible setback with any we are currently pursuing. HOOK 'EM, Texdoc
Whether he couldn't turn down the money, the opportunity, or even if it registered as an ethical dilemma on his radar is now irrelevant; but the simple fact will always remain that he screwed the University-especially if the Akina wanted to stay-and more importantly, he screwed a group of young, talented DBs that had the opportunity to change their commitment after Akina announced he was leaving but Jerry sold them a bill of goods to stay committed. Not much honor in that.
I agree that it was too much money to turn down. I agree that Gray has burned this bridge for good. Who's next??
Leave it alone. Gray did the right thing for his family and his career. If he is successful at Tenn., he will be in line for a Head job in either the NFL or college must faster than staying a DB coach at Texas. Anyone faulting Jerry for this is simply selfish. He did the right thing here. He always wanted to coach at Texas and he took it when it came open, despite Carroll offering him a raise. But, no way in hell does he turn down this job to be a DB coach at Texas. Face it, college football is the minor leagues for the NFL. I made it clear on page 1 when everyone was saying he was staying, that it was not over. Well, its over now and God Bless Jerry Gray and all his efforts as a player and his short time holding our DB recruiting class together as a coach. God Speed Coach Gray and maybe one day you will come back as the Head Coach of The University of Texas
I'm not sure you can burn your bridges by taking a promotion with 3x pay. Had he taken the DB coach with Titans with a small pay bump, I'd say they're burnt...
I don't know if he's burned any bridges, but I would be very surprised if Gray is offered another job here while Mack is the Head Coach.
What about Mack's next job (AD)? The only problem I have with Gray is he's "campaigned" for years to get back to Austin and be a part of this staff.
