Just like BronBron and "The Decision," it's not what he did, but the manner in which he did it. A man does have to do what a man has to do. That man also has to live with the consequences of his decision.
^ ^ YOU TELL 'EM!!! I'm sure that will make his family utilize and appreciate the extra 1.25M over the next 3 years a lot less!
Whatever. He hardly had time to do anything here and will earn more in his lifetime than most of us. He doesn't need or deserve our well wishes.
^ ^ I've posted on this topic about 20 times across several different sites, and somehow, I've never managed to state it the perfect way you just did. Well put.
Good luck to Jerry! A promotion from a position coach to an NFL DC is too good to pass up. He was way overqualified for the job we gave him.
The last time i changed jobs for a $900,000 raise i had a big smile on my face. Still smiling...........
I just cannot get behind Jerry Gray on this. He has been in the NFL far too long (and has been succesfull), and has way too many contacts to not know people would come callin. Why he took the Texas job I don't know. He had a job in Seattle and Carrol offered him a raise if he'd stay if I remember correctly. This "oppurtunity" just didn't come out of left field. This was a bad hire from the start ( I'm a Jerry Gray fan, his carreer path didn't fit here) and anyone who has hard feelings toward Gray are justified. I'd like to know what he and Mack talked about prior to his being hired.
Cry me a river. You people have no idea what his family responsibilities consist of. Its good to know that there are so many people here willing to turn down a raise out of loyalty. Maybe we can solve the states budget crisis. I won't hold my breathe on that. I don't understand the angst, he never coached one practice. So, he didn't exactly waste a lot of UT's time.
Good Luck? More like, Congrats. I wish someone would hire me away at 3x. Its not like he hasn't expressed interested for 10 years and we finally offer him a D-backs job with NFL D coordinator exp as well as mastery as a college player. All of you trying to place blame on him are nuts.
Don't disagree with his decision based solely on the comparison of our DB job vs. Titan's DC job. Yet I do think the consequences will carry a heavy price. No doubt the bridge has taken severe fire damage. With all we as Texas fans had to deal with since summer, it was an awful time to make promises and commit to help right the ship, and then bail a month later. I understand what he did and why someone would, but also grasp that he is likely not welcome back. I wouldn't be enthused if his name comes back up down the road for a Horn's opening. Sorry Jerry, the 2010 football season as a Longhorn and Cowboys fan was just way too taxing for maturity to prevail on this one. Was already burning out on supporting the Titans these last few years, now they're in my bottom 5 and get zero love on my end.
Evidently, Jerry can't say NO, and when he does, he does not mean it. Good luck hanging on to your extra cash, Jerry.
There's no way I'd trade Diaz for Jerry given the chance. The youth, excitement, and book on Diaz within the college coaching ranks says the sky is the limit for this guy. I'm more than ready to see what he's got in store. That MSU team was scrappy as hell in a conference full of serious offensive teams.
Everything works out the way they do for a reason. Not trying to overplay a cliche just saying that we can't jump to conclusions and act like this is irreparable harm. It's not. We're Texas and we are one of THE finest institutions to come to work for. Mack is highly respected amongst the field and whose to say that we don't have a badass DB coach waiting in the wings? Let's just allow things to play out as they are. I have a very confident feeling that we will land on our feet. As we always seem to do. Good luck Jerry. Would've loved to have had you for a season or two but it simply isn't to be.
Agree with HousHorn. The issue is not that he left - they are all going to leave at some point. The issue is he basically begs to come back to Texas; Mack makes room for him by telling Akina the job is filled when Stoops shorts him; and then he bolts in the middle of recruiting. Best of luck to him; just don't come back.
