I have watched the 5 second call several times and they call it with the arm going back while Joseph was calling a TO.

Then you get an obvious hack job on Johnson on the rebound at the end.

Texas didn't play a great game and I would have considered them lucky to win for most of the game and 2nd half. However in the last 15 seconds Texas got hosed twice and it cost them.

I timed the 5 second one. From the whistle it was exactly 5 seconds. From the time Joseph got the ball, however, it was more like 4. I'm not sure why the ref was so eager to call it, as they usually go 5.5 before even thinking about it. I guess with the game on the line, you try to be more "by the book," unless it's foul calls.

TNT just said the rule is no timeout can be called after four seconds... Didn't know that.

Whatever... Life sucks and then you die.

It isn't about the actual time. The ref doesn't have a stop watch down there. It is about where his arm is when he is counting out the 5 seconds. You can argue it was a slow 5 if you want but the 5th second never happened b/c his arm never came forward.....it was on the way back when Joseph clearly looked over and called the TO.

That timeout/5 sec call hurt, but our best free throw shooter should have been on the line shooting to to win after getting fore-armed 2 feet off his line going to the bucket.

And all the idiot analysts on TV can do is replay the Johnson rebound.

Like the Director of Officiating said yesterday after the Butler game, that is a foul in the first minute of the game and it should be a foul in the last minute of the game.

And why is there an already proven incompetent and disgraced Big East ref calling ours or any other of these games?

I'm so pissed off right now I can't think straight. And to make it worse, I live in Tucson and our phones started ringing off the hook as soon as it was over. [IMG]

if you're a ref, you better be darn sure on a call like that. Unless it is obvious, why not just give the team the timeout?

imo, the call could at best be considered borderline. why change a game on a borderline call, mr. referee?

Exactly... he is showing his time with his arm. He wanted to be the show and dramatically called 5 as he was starting the 5th second. He never gave it to the horns, and essentially decided that he wanted an impact on the game.

catfish, are you sure this is one of the refs who failed to see that play in the big east? If so, Deloss needs to file an official protest.

I'm almost positive on that ref, I think I heard the announcers mention it during the game as well. I've been wrong before though.

I like Barnes, I really do and I really appreciate what he's done with the program since he took it over, but maybe it is time for a change.

There is one guy out there that just turns me on when I watch them and I don't think this guy is a fluke at all, his track record is too stout, but the Butler coach really does it for me. I'd love to see what he could pull off here.

I call BS on the "no TO w/4 second" rule. The game should have never been in the hands of the zebras. This was the perfect storm of choking away a game: Hamilton's TO, 5 second call, the and-1 lost this game. [IMG]

That four second call was quick. WE DID GET HOSED.

We also contributed to the hose job by making a dumb time out call. Also, we waited too long to adjust to the inside defense Zona was throwing against TT.

Not sure about Texas getting hosed but the only one who played in the 2nd half was Brown, Texas was a one man team in the 2nd half.

we put ourselves in a position where all we had to do was inbound the ball within 5 seconds or call timeout. we did that and called the timout at less than 4.5 seconds by the refs own motion he changed the outcome of the game. Barnes said postgame that he hopes for the sake of that guy and the game that he did not screw up the count as it seemed but we watched it several times at different speeds and he either lost count or something!

Cory definitely called timeout after he had the ball 4 seconds. Now if the 5 seconds starts before the ref hands him the ball, it might be questionable. TNT did say you had to call TO by 4 seconds, but then they came back and overuled whatever genius said that, and did say you have 5 seconds!! Hate to lose this way!! [IMG]

Don't put yourself in a position to let the refs decide the game.

Those 10 first half turnovers hurt, don't they?

Nobody here is in Kindergarten. We know that there were things we did and didn't do that caused us to lose.

But in the NCAA Tourney, you should, at the very least, be able to count on competent officiating.

This year, the guys in stripes are ******* up all over the place.

Not just our game....which was ridiculous....but in multiple games.

These old, white, part-time, beyond middle-age half-*** losers aren't getting the job done.

Jim Burr is the old fat ref that screwed up the big least tourney game and then magically works in the game today.

If we don't brain fart our way into 10 first-half unforced turnovers, this isn't an issue. I'm not the least bit pissed at the officiating. I'm more inclined to feel like the team got what they deserved.

I also thought we were a little casual bringing the ball up court with less 8 seconds or so left. Rushing it down court would've given us another second at least, which may have been critical. Whatever, a great comeback. A marvelous display by J Brown. However, the sins of the 1st half were not forgiven. We'll miss Balbay, Johnson and Hill but next yr should be fun with the growth we've seen from Brown, Thompson, Hamilton, Joseph, ect... If they all come back we could be scary good. Certainly one of the teams with a chance to cut down the nets.

OK, can someone point me to where the rules say you can't call TO on an inbounds after 4 seconds? This is the refs excuse. I can't find it in the rulebook.

It has been confirmed that there is no such rule.

The official statement from Dick Cartmell (the ref who blew the call) was that five second count happened before CJ called time-out. Obviously, he hasn't taken time to watch the replay.

Really good discussion about this on 1st and 10 today. Andy Katz took the pro establishment side while Bayliss said Texas got robbed twice.

Katz said the count was close and even though he didn't really disagree that Texas should have gotten the TO he thought Texas melted down in other ways that cost them the game....Hamilton not coming back to the ball for the imbounds....Hamilton clearing the way for the last shot by Arizona....JB taking a poor shot near the end of the game.

Bayliss said that the count was fast and mentioned the 4.76 seconds that Sportscenter showed last night. He also said the ref said after the game that the 5 count expired before CJ turned to call the TO. This is obviously false. I am wondering if the ref miscounted at this point. Bayliss thinks that Miller (coach of AZ) was upset about a previous no call and was in the refs face during the TO. He thinks that the ref was looking to make a call the other way and just got overexcited. He also thought Texas got robbed on the foul call.

Experts are focusing on the phantom 5 second call and not on the choice to call TO by Barnes or the last second no foul call on Johnson. I think the ref miscounted and thought he was on 5.5 seconds or something. I also think it was just another bad call in a tournament of poor calls late in games. Texas wasn't the only victim of this officiating this year for sure.

The five second call was blown. That is clear now, its all over the airwaves. Yes, this has been a banner March for blown calls.

But I have to say, I don't feel any better that other teams also have been hosed. I only care about the Horns. Our Horns got hosed and it cost them the game.

Now you could justifiably say that the time out contributed big time to the loss. I agree. But even so, the ref hosed us royally and without that we win this game.
