SMU is making its case to join a BCS conference and said it has appealed to the Big 12, the Dallas Morning News reported on Thursday.

SMU athletic director Steve Orsini and president R. Gerald Turner told the paper that they believe they have a program, currently in Conference USA, ready to compete in a BCS conference, noting that the Big 12 makes the most sense.

The comments come at a time when conference realignment is at the forefront of college athletics. Texas A&M notified the Big 12 on Thursday that it will explore other conference options, a likely first step to joining the SEC.

That could open a spot in the Big 12 for another school and Houston and BYU are two schools that show up in various reports as possibilities. The Mustangs want to be sure they are considered, especially in light of TCU moving to the Big East, a BCS conference, in 2012-2013.

"We are pushing for it," Turner said, according to the newspaper. "We want the city to know we're pushing for it. We need as much help as possible, even from non-SMU alums. We believe it's good for Dallas."

The Mustangs' football program has seen a resurgence under coach June Jones. They are coming off their second consecutive bowl game and finished as the runner-up in Conference USA, losing to Central Florida in the title game.

Before those two bowl games, SMU hadn't been to one since before the school incurred the NCAA's "death penalty" in 1987.

And I'd like to express interest in Mila Kunis.

I'm not sure the Big 12 is Mila Kunis level these days. Maybe a worn out 45 year old version who can't be so choosey about whose limo she climbs into.

Maybe SMU could join the SEC with aggy. They certainly have the "pedigree" to join that league. [IMG]

As for the Big12: They add nothing to the league, no footprint, no following to fill stadiums, and nothing to pull TV ratings. Maybe a few cute coeds, but that's not enough. Pony stay home. [IMG]

Watch the video. Craig James saying how SMU has a "history". No ****, Craig. SMU has a history like a convicted rapist out on parole.

He also talks about the rivalries between SMU and Tech, Baylor, Texas, and TCU. (Aggy strangely missing here.) TCU is the only one that I see as a rival to SMU. The rest of the schools couldn't care less.

Take your douchy school and your douchy self and stay away.

The Big 12 may not be what it once was, but of course SMU would be interested in joining. A 2007 Acura isn't as nice as a brand new BMW, but I would take it if I was driving a 94' Cavalier.

And I'd be happy as hell to show off the keys.

Perfect. They would indeed fit right in and give ag a new rival. Ponys and Ags T+2 - maybe the Sunshine Network could pick it up.

Hopefully, the Big XII does not express any interest in SMU.

I would take Rice before SMU or UH. Seriously.

And I wouldn't really consider Rice, so that tells you where SMU and especially UH rank.

I would only be interested in adding TCU or possibly UTEP. Cougar High and the Ponys would add zero value.

This may be contrary to most on this board but the best thing Dodds can do is get on the horn with ATM and work things out. Keeping them in the Big 12 is the best for the conference. We cannot replace them. Notre Dame, seriously? No way in hell they would come here. BYU, who cares?

Work out a way to keep aggy. Thanksgiving day goes on as usual and 100 years traditions continue to exist.

Seriously folks. I'd like to hear what other option is better for the conference and Texas.

What other option is better? UT, OU, Tech, and OSU to the newly-named PAC 16, as part of the PAC East, with the two Arizona schools, Colorado, and Utah. Mizzou goes to the SEC with agricultural, which I think they intend to do if offered, despite anything Alden's said to the contrary. KU and KSU go to the Big East...KU's basketball program will fit right in with the great Big East programs. Iowa State might be invited to the Big East, but more likely winds up in the Mountain West. Baylor...hmmm...C-USA?

Making nice with agricultural is a non-starter...you can't have a rational discussion with a closed mind.

I have no interest in going to the Pac whatever. Texas vs the Ducks...what? It has no appeal to me. I think things can be worked out with the Aggies. Just my opinion.

I would love to have a thriving Big 12 with aggie sticking around. This would require two nonexistant things:
    1) leadership in the B 12 offices, and 2) reasonalble aggies.

Beebee brain is not up to the job. Aggie is absolutely sure that the grass is greener to the east. I honestly believe they would (most of them) rather be a perinial also ran in the SEC than live in our shadow for one more day. Even though this move all but gurantees they will never play for the MNC, and probably never even have a viable shot at a conference championship, it seems to be the only thing they are living for. How can you argue with them when they are so stupid? [IMG]

If they figure out how to win games they get out of our shadow. In the '80s they were nationally ranked most of the time and we were not. That can happen again. What is the value in moving to the SEC. I just don't get it.

aggy has no intention or willingness to "work things out". They are on a roll.

They have worked themselves into a frenzy about how great they are now, how everyone covets them, and how they are teaching TEXAS a lesson. Next stop a National Championship.

They will completely ignore history, statistics, words of warning, and reality in general once the rhetoric has reached this level. These are the folks who gave Fran a massive salary increase AFTER loosing to blow-u 77-0, I suppose just to appear equal (in their eyes) with major programs.

These kinds of desperate actions by aggy represent something they are famous for.... and they are not unfamiliar to anyone who has observed their antics over more than 4 or 5 years.

If you are right, geezer, then PAC whatever here we come. I don't like it but it's either work it out with the farmers or go west. I see these as our only viable options. Damn. I just cannot get excited about being in a conference out west.

Now that aNm has petitioned to leave, I believe UT, tech, ou and o$u should seek membership in the sec west with LSU, Ark, Miss, and MissSt. Let aggie go Indy or Pac13

This is the third or fourth year for June Jones, SMU has a ton coming back on an offense that racks up a ton of yardage.

I wouldn't be surprised if SMU gave them a game.

UT, OU, TT, OSU to the new PAC-16. The first superconference. I can feel it.
