Can we close the Gilbert chapter now?

Mack may well have saved GG's career, as he could make a wonderful tightend, like his brother at TCU.

Just hate it when our fans boo our kids. Support the team on the field or shut up. I want the young guns out there too but Gilbert does not deserve to get bood,

GG should have never been put in a position to be booed. He should have been replaced in the Kansas State game last year, and then shared duties with McCoy for the rest of the season. He came into the program as the heir apparent, and into this season – regardless of the spin – as the anointed one.

We can blame the fans for being insensitive or classless but, well, they’re human and they pay good money to see a competitive product on the field. With GG at the helm, they were not getting their money’s worth. It is my belief that MB hung with GG way too long, ultimately resulting in his being the object of the fan’s wrath. It’s sad, but probably true.

My guess it that GG just might be the most relieved person in Austin tonight. The pressure’s off.

It is now a new day, and there is enthusiasm everywhere. We’ve had the talent. Now we’re gaining the confidence. This could be a wild ride.

The studio crew after the game said point blank "The GG experiment is over". I agree.

It has been apparent during the open scrimmage in the spring and from the scrimmage reports in the fall that GG wasn't getting it done. McCoy and Ash were. But we were told that Ash was too young and didn't have enough of the offense down, and that Gilbert had more experience and could manage the offense. I have been telling everyone that I know that the best QBs will come to the top in the process and that even if GG started the season that he wouldn't be the starter by midseason. Now we are to game 3 and I think he has already moved down to #3. He had his opportunity and the Texas team had to bench him in order to barely win this game.

I thought they should have pulled him for sure after the 2nd drive when the Texas offense wasn't getting a first down. I think what has seemed obvious to most fans is now obvious to Mack. He saw it right in front of his eyes how a true freshman and a sophomore QB with limited snaps last year took a team down by 13 points on their backs and made the plays needed to win. The same plays that cost this Texas team 3 or 4 wins last year and would have made a mediocre Texas team in 2010 look like the worst Texas team under Brown.

Mack said the guy who moves the chains and sticks the ball in the endzone will play. It is clear who that is and who that isn't.

Mack's sense of loyalty has long been his Achilles's heel. He tends to not recognize when personal loyalty is interfering with his responsibility to serve the team's best interests. Most of the time this works out to be a plus, as a certain amount of loyalty is crucial to team-building. But occasionally it doesn't, and Mack seems to be the last person in the world to realize a change needs to be made. We've seen it with players and coaches.

But hey, he's much more successful at what he does than I am at what I do, so I can't really criticize. I just think its something that bites him from time to time.

I have never thought GG was beating out McCoy in practice and have said so many times. GG is a solid QB if absolutely nothing is going wrong. The Texas OL is mediocre, at best, and McCoy is much more cacpable of making things happen despite that than Gilbert which is why he is a better fit for this offense. Not to mention he and Ash are leaders and GG simply isn't. I have told y'all that for 3 straight spring/summers and it hasn't changed.

Have you forgotten the regime we play under? MB still places a huge emphasis on loyalty and experience. Ash and McCoy have never played a game on the road. I'll be shocked if we don't see GG not only start, but play at least half the game.

On a different note, Ash needs to learn the 'Read' part of the Zone-Read. If he keeps it EVERY time, all he's doing is putting our very mediocre offense in a hole to begin with.

But watching another Shipley out there is phenomenal. He runs routes and has hands just like his brother...unreal

David Ash reminded me of John Chiles, with his tendency to tuck the ball and run at the first opportunity. And we all know what happened to him. If Ash cannot learn to control this tendency, his destiny may be a similar one.

It is time to hand the reins to the younger QBs.

Ash is a true freshman and was in high school a few months ago. He actually made the correct read on most of his plays. He made positive yardage. He is there to protect the ball and not turn it over. He had a 2 play package. He did what the coaches wanted him to do.

GG was a system QB at Lake Travis. He committed early to Texas, played ok in his system, and then showed up to campus. It all went down hill.

GD and Mack turned him in to a head case by "renewing the run game" that didn't work and having McWhorter continue to swing and miss on OL coaching. If they had stuck with what was working with Colt in 2008-09, we might have actually had a fighting chance to win 8 games last year in spite of our deficiencies.

I guess the other side of the argument is that GD would still be here and we'd still be without hope for the near future.

GG either needs to take on a Richard Walton role (be the smartest guy on the team that doesn't get on the field unless there's an emergency), or transfer. With Brewer coming in, we'll have a three deep for 2012 and beyond.

All 3 of our quarterbacks are highly capable- let's stop with the GG criticisms. He has NFL capabilities- the issue is that for years we treated our QBs like they were 5 year old girls, afraid to hurt their feelings and make them compete like we would the LBs.

Our issue is coaching- few teams have done so little with so much talent as we have. That may be about to change for the better..

I usually thought the hallmark of an NFL QB were accurate throws at all distances (not just the deep ball). GG doesn't seem to have good touch on the short/intermediate routes.
