Dodds is probably an awesome poker player, but he's a terrible diplomat (which a large university athletic director needs to be, at least somewhat). Fortunately for UT, Bill Powers is a much better statesman.
Nah. You don't have to be a diplomat to be a good poker player, just play your hand, which - depending upon your POV - DD has done well or not so good. I still think it's too early to tell how good his hand is (despite what T. Bone says), but I do know he has ridden us of the aggy, which I much appreciate.
We are who we are. People say what they say. We're proud of ourselves. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- that's hilarious--especially "we're proud of ourselves". sounds exactly like it was written by jack handy. play amateur psychologist for a moment. what would motivate someone to say something like that? (a la jack's doggone it, i'm good enough, etc). somebody may not be feeling too good about things?
What Dodds is saying is why waist time with BS like what others think of UT. There's money to be counted and we need to get back to it!!!
I agree that Dodds probably doesn't give a ****, but the point (at least to fellow Big 12 conference members) is that he should at least appear to give a ****. Being a good poker player and being a good diplomat are completely different skills, but lots of high-power jobs require multiple talents. Mack's job is a perfect example: he has to understand what motivates recruits, what motivates their parents, how to evaluate recruits, how to get the best out his coaching staff, how to give good interviews to the media, etc. which are all distinct skills. Some good quotes about diplomacy... Diplomacy is the art of telling someone to go to hell and making them look forward to the trip. Diplomacy - the art of letting someone have your way.
Few minutes ago on "Outside the Lines" a chap -- media chap from I think SEC territory... alongside Pat Forde and someone from CNBC -- referred to Larry Scott as the Gordon Gekko of it all. Perceptions are growing as to the real value and principles of those involved in the melee. Texas stands strong, far as I am concerned.
Dodds is not the ******* conference commissioner. His job is to take care of Texas. What he says publicly and what he says behind closed doors to his peers (if he has any ) is probably different
No one said play with no hand you dolt. It takes some finesse in any business. You cant just bulldoze everyone and come out with a good result. That is all anyone is saying when criticizing Dodds
In reply to: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (a la jack's doggone it, i'm good enough, etc). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That was Stuart Smalley, not Jack Handy, you monster. ------------------------ right you are. oh well, the point is the same. your friend, the monster
I'm probably one of the few on this board who doesnt care for Dodds. Most of you don't remember the late 70's until Mack got here. Keep in mind that Dodds didnt want to hire Brown, he wanted to hire Barnett. His hand was forced to hire Brown by the behind the scenes boosters. Dodds wouldnt know a good football coach if one hit him in the face. He has taken credit for a lot of success of the LF and other fundraising activities that he personally had very little to do with. A lot of people are unhappy with Dodds. They blame him for the mess TX is in and they don't like all of this crap that has happened one bit. I won't be surprised if Dodds "retires" fairly soon.
General, lets not forget that within one calendar year Deloss hired not only Mack, but Augie and Barnes as well. I know you said he wouldn't know a good football coach but it's hard to argue against any of those hires.
I think Dodds has done a good job overall. However, let's not pretend that the man shits nothing but golden eggs. We have had a few misses during his tenure - who remembers "Dump DeLoss and Flush the John" back in the '90s? I'm not so sure Coach G is working out for women's hoops right now, either. We should be paying our women's hoops coach far less to suck this much. I do think he has played his hand regarding the LHN well, though. I just wish Bellmont would hire a better PR person to control the message a little more in our favor, without altering our strategy. As someone else pointed out, diplomacy does count for something.
General, lets not forget that within one calendar year Deloss hired not only Mack, but Augie and Barnes as well. __________________________________________________ its easy to hire the best when you have the most money. big deal, he hired one of the best baseball coaches in america. its least he could do after the way gus was treated. He also hired (6-22) Weltlich, Mackovic and McWilliams for football. he doesnt **** gold. everything we have right now isbecause of the popularity of the football program. if barnett gets hired, we dont have the new endzone and upper deck. and despite the internet fodder of those that want to go to the pac-10, a lot of people that give a lot of money and own the luxury suites happen to enjoy the big xii and do not like the culture that has been created.
Penta..... When our womens coach was hired there was virtually no better qualified coach, with a better record at a great school (Duke) available. The fact that Baylor and aggy have excelled and Gayle has faltered is in no way reflective of Dodds decision. Gayle may yet do well and her history supports that.
