Vince Young doesn't scramble for a first down on 4th and 18 at Kansas? Would Mack Brown still be here? I'm not a "hater", but it makes you wonder. That single play may have shaped UT for years/decades. Things to ponder during an off week.

I think if VY does not get that first down at Kansas, he stays at Texas and we roll the nation in 2006.

J-Finley, Vince Young, J-Charles, S-Young, Q, Ship and some others I am missing, most of the O-line. That offense would have been real scary.

Where would we be if VY had stayed for his final year?
    - Beat tOSU here in Austin
    - Colt is never injured in the K-State game, cascading into that home a&m game
    - win second straight nat'l title
    - Colt goes into first true year as starter his true soph year (getting PT during VY's last year)
    - Colt never gets the 45 wins, but is set up to win one or two more titles... because....

Jamaal Charles does not leave for his final year, putting him here for the 2008 season...
    - that year gets past the Tech game with Charles on the field
    leading to....
    - a national title for 2008.. and then
    - 2009 Colt's senior year and a second straight title...

    VY stays and Charles stays...
RESULT: two back-to-back titles... 2005 and 2006 seasons
and 2008 and 2009 seasons. I'm factoring in that the game at the Rose Bowl also does not end up with that injury.

    So, make it three things.
VY stays, Charles stays, Colt never gets injuried in Pasadena...
4 national titles across that span.

Assuming the Butterfly Effect does not cause Colt to under-develop and under-achieve by only getting a little PT during VY's final year.

An added result would be that instead of ending up going to the SEC by now, A&M would have just quit playing football all together and torn down their tackle box stadium and built an academic facility in it's place. And be better off and more respected as an institution.

What if Vince had been a competitive eater rather than a football player and Mack Brown owned a successful auto repair shop in Tennessee?

You all are ignoring the obvious. Vince Young keeps Ramonce Taylor in line, and gets him serious about football. Ramonce gives up weed, and puts up ungodly numbers in 2007, winning the heisman and taking the pressure off of freshman QB Colt McCoy. Texas finishes 13-0 and wins its third championship in 3 years, and 3rd of a 5 year run of national titles. ESPN declares Texas the team of the millineum.

On Texas being crowned national champions for a record fifth straight season, the heads of all living A&M alumni spontaneously explode, causing a shift in the rotation of the earth and offsetting the effects of greenhouse gas emissions. With the threat of global warming thus ended, Al Gore claims to have invented Texas Football.

In a surprising twist, Rick Perry who has been dead for 2 years after having his head explode in response to Texas success, is still selected by the republican party as its nominee for President in the 2012 election. Perry wins the presidency over Obama by a narrow margin, and is immediately succeeded by Dick Cheny who achieved vice presidential nomination after producing a hand-writ letter of succession penned by President Perry.

At his inauguration, Cheney swears his oath of office and immediately turns to the camera and flashes a hook'em horns sign.

    Since we're all what-iffing:
    1) Gideon catches that interception at Tech and seals the game. Horns go on to title game against Florida and roll them.

    2) Colt doesn't take that hit at that precise angle at that precise point on his shoulder, stays in the game and puts up his regular numbers and beats Alabama.

    2 single plays
that had they gone the other way would have given Texas 2 more National Championships.

I am confused. 4th and 18 occurred in our Michigan Rose Bowl year. Why would that have affected whether Vince stayed after winning the NC the following year?

I often wonder where we would be if, after Mackovic's fall, Dodds had listened to my well reasoned emails (two to be precise) urging him to hire the then DC at Florida and if not the then DC at Florida, the then HC at Northwestern.

He was kind enough to respond to my emails. I was just a second year student then. The fact that he responded made my year.

I forgot that this game was in 2004, not 2005! Still makes for good conversation! The recap is below:

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Stirring rallies are becoming the Longhorns' specialty.

One week after scoring 49 unanswered points in the biggest comeback in school history, Texas (No. 7 ESPN/USA Today, No. 6 AP) the Longhorns got a touchdown run and a scoring pass from Vince Young in the final 4:11 to beat Kansas 27-23.

Young had 409 yards total for the Longhorns (9-1, 6-1 Big 12), who rallied for a 56-35 win over Oklahoma State the week before and still have hopes of playing in a BCS bowl.

"One of the great things about Vince Young is that he can beat you both ways," said Texas coach Mack Brown.

Young scrambled 22 yards on a fourth-and-18 play and then scored on an 18-yard run to pull Texas within 23-20 with 4:11 to go.

"We expected that they were going to play the pass, so I just used my God-given talent to use my legs," he said. "In my head I refused to let them make that tackle. In my head I had already planned to make (Kansas) miss."

Then, with 11 seconds to go, he connected with Tony Jeffery for the winning TD, denying Kansas what would have been its biggest win in almost a decade.

"Vince threw a great pass," said Jeffery. "It was the biggest catch I have had this year."

The Longhorns got the ball for their final drive after a controversial offensive pass interference call on Kansas that left Jayhawks coach Mark Mangino fuming.

Mangino, in remarks that could bring a stiff fine from the Big 12 office, implied that officials wanted Texas to win so it could bring a BCS windfall into the league.

"You know what this is all about, don't you? BCS. That's what made a difference today in the game," Mangino said. "That's what made the difference in a call in front of their bench. Dollar signs."

The Jayhawks (3-7, 1-6) still led 23-20 after Young's 18-yard TD run but faced a third-and-7 from their own 26. Quarterback Brian Luke hit Charles Gordon for a 16-yard gain that would have given them a first down.

But officials called Gordon for a penalty, making it third and 20. A moment later, Kansas punted out of its own end zone and the Longhorns got the ball on the Kansas 47 with 1:53 to go.

"All of America sat at home and watched the play," Mangino said. "All college football fans who watched the game, we'll let them be the judge about that call."

Mangino backed off from his comments in a statement released Saturday night.

"After an emotional loss, in our seniors' last home game, I made remarks that I regret," Mangino said. "Any implications that BCS standings played a role in Saturday afternoon's game was inappropriate. I have always supported the BCS system and will continue to do so."

Brown said he did not want to get drawn into a controversy.

"I know he's really proud of (his team) and I also know he's really frustrated," Brown said. "The other thing I would say is I think we had 100 yards more penalties than they did. So obviously, those are comments for the Big 12 office, not for me."

The Longhorns were penalized 10 times for 103 yards. Kansas drew three penalties for 23.

Kansas, a 22-point underdog, took a 23-13 lead with 7:41 left on a 1-yard touchdown pass from fourth-stringer Luke to Lyonel Anderson.

Young finished 22-of-40 for 289 yards and added 114 yards on the ground. Cedric Benson, the Big 12's leading rusher, had 161 yards on 28 carries and set an NCAA record with his 36th game with a touchdown when he went in from 16 yards out in the second quarter.

Luke came into the game in the second quarter when starter John Nielsen became the third Kansas quarterback in three weeks to go down with an injury. Luke finished 14-for-25 for 225 yards and a touchdown. His 73-yard completion to Mark Simmons set up the final Kansas touchdown.

Johnny Beck kicked three field goals in the first half for Kansas.

No. I don't worry about the "what if's". 'Cause, if I did, I'd constantly be looking back and dwelling on missed opportunities and never able to move forward. Upward and onward.

I remember the Kansas game as my first experience with DVR. We watched the game at a friend's house but showed up after kickoff. He paused it for us and we forgot that we were delayed. Just before the 4th and 18 during what I think was a timeout my brother-in-law called talking about the awesome play. After a few confused seconds, I realized we were time shifted, turned from furious to smiling, watched the big play. I did not realize until a few minutes later that he had called after the great TD grab.

BTW, who was the LB on that play that wae pretty good and VY faked so well?

i like to ask where we would be if Mack Brown had not been hired. You would probably still be able to buy $5.00 end zone seats at HEB in our 84,000 seat stadium.

Nick Reid. Witnessed the Texas two step. And to answer the question we'd be 10-2 and would have destroyed LSU or somebody in the Cotton Bowl again for the 2nd year in 3. And still would have won the MNC the following year, where we destroyed KU. This thread was initiated with a bad memory.
