The fact is, it wouldn't be Jack Daniels, for better or for worse, were it made elsewhere.

    That's marketing hype; not fact.

Aging whisky in barrels in a different location will impact taste. If storing barrels on different floors of a warehouse matters, then certainly a different state will mater more.

"Where the barrels are stored also makes a big difference. Is the warehouse brick or stone is it an iron clad warehouse? Brick or stone warehouses are often heated with steam in the winter. Brick or stone warehouses do not reach the extreme temperatures that the ironclad houses do in the summer and the winter. What floor is the barrel stored on in the warehouse is also an important factor. Heat rises so the top floors are going to get hotter in the summer. The rising heat also creates a chimney affect pulling cooler air in at the bottom keeping the ground floor cooler in the summer. "

    1) Water: Is the water processed city water or from a deep well? Well water is going to have more minerals in it than the processed water. It is also important that the water be free of iron. Iron turns the distillate black and gives it a fowl taste.

7Titles, don't bother. Perham seems to know everything about everything. I'm not sure your links will disabuse him of that notion.

Look, water could be imported from Lynchburg to New Jersey. Aging conditions in Lynchburg could be recreated. Casks can be imported from Lynchburg.

I'm telling you that the exact same-tasting Jack Daniels COULD be made in New Jersey. But people wouldn't buy it because of what Jack Daniels has established, and part of that myth is Lynchburg itself.

So both the distillery and the town have a vested interest in Jack Daniels remaining viable on the world market.

    Wow, derail much?

    My 2 cents:

He's a lot younger than the company, so did he grow up there and all of a sudden get a stick up his *** or did he move there later in life and is trying to make the place better for himself like those self rightious bastard retirees ruining New Braunfels? Either way, the article failed to mention the roads this guy wants improved, so we don't know if this is a real issue or if the guy is just trying justify his attempted money grab.

Either way, I doubt very seriously that in a small town with a billion dollar/year plant that employs 1/3 of the townfolk direct,ly ANYthing that is remotely detrimental to the business will make it on the books.

....trying to make the place better for himself like those self rightious bastard retirees ruining New Braunfels?

You mean the people who actually own property and live in New Branfels who wish to limit pollution, mostly in the form of beer cans and drunken slobs vomiting and urinating on their property?

If that is self-righteousness we need more of it, brother.

That beautiful stretch of river does not exist for the young and crude to befoul in their never-ending quest for a good time.

Also, hell yes people would still buy JD if it were made in New Jersey.

I agree completely with BI on the Lynchburg angle. Lots of companies have made huge mistakes by undersestimating things like this.

When you begin to outsource you lose certain controls. It is inevitable. There will be certain differences in taste. They might be very subtle and they might even be better. But that is a huge, huge risk for a company like JD to take.

Products like whiskey have pretty ardent followers. If anything goes wrong in a move like this (taste differences, perception differences, heck even unsubstantiated blog reports that claim JD is now using polluted water from New Jersey in their whiskey) and they market share can erode quickly. Plus, the costs to build a plant somewhere else would be substantial so that you couldn't just shut it down if it doesnt work.

For better or worse, they are tied to Lynchburg for their base product.

As to the article, I wouldn't call the man quoted miserable, but I would call him misguided, short sighted and potentially pretty dangerous to the town as a whole.

An interesting note from the article was that already 60% of the cost of a bottle of JD is paid out in some form of a tax. That is astonishing.

As to his point that the poor people of Lynchburg were taken advantage of by JD's marketing is laughable at its kindest.

JD annually gives tens of millions to charity.

last point, why in the hell do news services even give guys like this a voice? I might think Mark Cuban has enough money that he could build a really nice park for the kids in my neighborhood. I mean, I only want it for the good of the kids and he can surely afford it. Why shouldnt we force him to give it to us?

I dont think it is a bad analogy. First, there have been no accusations or evidence that anything you mention (roads, water plant- JD actually has their own internal water purification plant- etc) has actually occurred. Second, JD already pays 1/3 of the taxes for the entire county directly. Moore county has a 6.75% sales tax and an annual budget of $3 M. Lets say the 250,000 folks that visit annually to go see JD spend say $75 per person (this is being generous when you consider gas, food, occassional lodging and whatever they buy from the plant) that represents another almost $1.3 M in tax receipts, or more than another 1/3 again just from JD. I'd say that is more than their fair share.

They just have a lot of money so this guy thinks they should pay more. Just like I think Cuban has a lot of money and should pay more.
