Horns get a verbal commitment from Jalen Overstreet to add depth to QB position. Welcome to Texas, Jalen. Link
An interesting pickup. He reminds me a lot of Demarco Cobbs from the clips. Man-among-boys syndrome. Not too fast and his arm isn't the highest caliber, but he's definitely a football player. He's the kind of guy you could see playing 10 different positions, kind of like Cobbs. If he's given a shot at QB, it'll dispel the rumors about Mack only wanting strong-armed QBs.
Good solid recruit. He definitely has the blood lines. I heard his uncle David Overstreet was a great player at OU and was in the NFL until he tragically died in a car accident. Also a good addition because I think Mack learned his lesson in not putting all of your eggs in one basket like he did with Gilbert.
I like that there are 2 different styles of Qb's and which adds a different dimension to the offense coming in 2012! Good stuff....
What Rider said, to the nth power... I just heard on 104.9 FM (Austin ESPN) by Geoff ... emphasizing that this is directly a Harsin pick. Bodes well. He sees something he wants to put on the field, and I'm very much in agreement of having a mix of styles at a top level for this program!!
Great article on Overstreet's recruitment (and verbal) on ESPN. Wow, Jalen comes across as extremely thoughtful and well spoken. I'm older than Mike Gundy and will be darned if I've ever been that well spoken, let alone in high school or college.
David Overstreet was the best high school player I have ever seen. I realize it was Big Sandy and 1-A football, but he'd have 275 yards and 5 TD's on seven carries ----- at halftime. They wouldn't play him at RB during the second half. Big Sandy won state and it was like they were toying with other teams. David Overstreet would be the all-time Texas yardage leader, ahead of Kenneth Hall, had he not been pulled so early in so many games.
I hope we don't play LSU then... I kid, but this is a great add and I like that Harsin picked this one for his offense. I have always wanted dreads at the QB position.
Okay, I'm going to go down as the contrarian. There wasn't much to take from his highlights except good speed and balance and bullish strength for a QB. There is a 20 minute film of the Tatum-Gilmer game from Sept '11, though, and in that game he shows that he cannot pass whatsoever: he has no good sense of leading a receiver, and no touch. He threw 2 INT's, was WAY off on most of his passes, he fumbled three times, losing 2, and his team lost 34-0. (I think Tatum is 2A and Gilmer a top-level 3A, so there's that.) I don't see how he could come close to playing QB at Texas. We have Mykkele Thompson on the roster already, who ran for 2800+ yards in 5A ball last year as a dual-threat QB. I would rather make a project out of him if we want a project.
VYFan, I suspect the difference is that many expect Thompson to be playing Sundays at safety. I'm not sure if Overstreet has that kind of speed.
With Gilbert and Wood both leaving we needed another QB. If we don't get any other transfers, he may decide to try safety. Doubt he'll ever be first string, but there's nothing wrong with a kid wanting a shot and a great education is there for the taking. With these coaches he'll get his shot which is all he can ask. And if he moves, 4.55 is not too slow to play strong safety and that assumes he never gets any faster while on campus. Sounds like a great kid and glad to have him aboard.
I remember hearing that Ole Miss back in the fifties when they were competitive used to offer a scholarship to nearly any small town quarterback figuring that he would be the best athlete on the team.
Mykkele cannot throw. In fact, I haven't seen that kid throw ever. Like... EVER! If you have a clip of him throwing, please provide a link.
does this mean we are out of it for tyrone swoopes? would love to have as many athletes as possible! skc
