Ash is not the answer!

Here are some observations on Ash:

    1) He is a back up QB at pretty much all other Big-12 programs.

    2) He has not improved as the year has gone on. 9 games in, he still cannot find open receivers, throws poorly, and his reads are just marginally improved. I have lost track of how often the announcers said his reads were wrong, or his throws were bad! It was disgusting.

    3) If Texas ever has the good fortune to recruit even a decent (let alone exceptional) QB, Ash becomes a bench warmer. He has shown nothing to engender confidence in his abilities.

    4) Between the OU game (when I first saw him play on TV) and today it is clear that he cannot be counted on to win games with his passing.

    5) If you compare the freshmen campaigns of Major, Simms, Vince, and Colt, to what Ash has produced so far, what would you say?

True freshman or not, when you see the player make the same mistakes now that he made earlier in the season, its hard be confident that he will get seriously better.

Finally, not an Ash issue, but an indictment of Mack and his recruiting, every QB that Texas has recruited after Colt, has turned out to be a bust. The same school that once had Vince Young on its roster, now cant get the likes of Franklin or RG III!

I'm sure Ash will feel better after having read your post.

So you're saying that the coach's current plan to not recruit any more quarterbacks and hand the job to Ash for three more years should be put on hold?

I guess I'm not seeing what your issue here is other than complaining about past recruiting classes. I think that horse has been beaten to death for about two years now. Ash is the QB for the rest of this season - either deal with it or don't.

I think both the QBs deserve a little slack. Neither was playing with any semblence of a running game. Their top WR was out. Hey, even Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin proved how difficult it was to win without their top running back playing. Then again Colt was pretty good without a great running game.

Apparently Harsin agreed with you when he (temporarily???) gave up on Ash and
tried Case. That, too, did not work. We are in serious trouble.
I never thought that this year was anything except a rebuilder. Now, with no QB
developing, next year may be more of the same.
And for those that blame Mack for these gaps in recruiting (evaluating??), count
me in. This should never happen here. We went through the Mackovic years and
thought that that was past us. It isn't.

I'm willing to give Ash the benefit of the doubt. He's a true frosh who backed Garret and Case at different times this season. He got his first true start at almost mid-season, so he's been behind the development curve. He's struggled to gain his footing.

For Ash, an iffy O-line, a weak receiving corps, and fresman RBs have made it more difficult (although the emergence of Brown and Bergeron is a real blessing) for him. Major and Chris Simms had consistently good O-lines, Cedric Benson, and Roy/BJ/Sloan to throw to. I don't think its a completely fair comparison for Ash.

As I said in aonther thread, I hope Harsin simplies the offense to highlight his raw talent. A heavy dose of zone read/option play with a short passing game would go a long way. [IMG]

We have no other option in 2011.

Case mcCoy literally cannot set his feet, its like he's never played Qb in his life. Ash throws everything like a fastball, but at least he sets his feet.

I think Coder summed it up well. I think our current situation is not ideal - our only two active quarterbacks being a freshman and sophomore. I do like the fact that both Case and Ash have had ample opportunity during game time to show that they are the "one" this year.

The Missouri D-Line pushed our O-Line so far back, the QB's could rarely set their feet and step into their throws. We pretty much got man-handled up front.

If our passing requires such an education then why is Mykkele Thompson playing D?? I mean WTF? Why not play a system featuring your backs and have a guy like MT play QB for you. He can move, make the O-Line look slightly less horrid and make a few throws on the run.

I don't understand why he is playing D. We could have a RGIII type player being wasted here. And for what? So, that we can watch and pray that the current players "develop" out of this mess. Why not develop a player like MT at the QB position?

    Slugga,

Did Greg Davis run over you dog with his truck or something? All you do on here is blame Greg Davis for everything. You sound like these posters on TexAgs who blame everything on Franchione.

This RGIII for safety thing was a Greg Davis problem.[IMG]

Let go of it. We had a great run of some great offenses and BCS games, 2 championship games, and a national championship. He's moved on, we moved on. Let's move on with our lives.

...lets see Ash was tasked to manage the game within the context of a very specific run first game plan...that game plan was thrown out the window the day of the game....in his first road game start with windy conditions...this one was on the coach who made the call to run bergeron 29 times against tech with the game well in hand,..and ironically, resulted in Fozzy going down because it would have been Bergeron running that play

No OL pass protection + heavy wind = True Freshman having a bad day.

Really there has been some concern by a small few before Missouri, and now after Missouri in the heavy wind and a team that exposed our OL we have them coming out of the wood works. And who ever is the poster that is trying to compare Ash to those other QB's, how many of them were playing HS football just the year before being the starter at Texas?

A David Ash thread has GDGD supporters. Wow.

It was one bad game. In the wind. With none of our top 4 playmakers. I bet Ash comes out on fire Saturday, and I will be looking forward to it all week.

Like good qbs come out fully formed as freshman.

It can take time, grooming, nurturing, patience.

Some of you aren't UT football fans; you're only entertainment junkies. You want instant gratification.

Ash would be getting rave reviews on teams that run exclusively (think Air Force, Army or Navy). However, for a QB to be productive at the level Texas wants to play on, he has to be able to throw the ball down the field accurately and consistently in order to keep the back six or seven defensive players off the LOS. Can Ash develop this between now and next season - maybe, but it will take long days, dedication, and a good teacher.

Please step away from the ledge. UT is 6-3, bowl eligible. They have a true freshman starting at QB. The top WR was OUT(Shipley)
    The top RB was OUT(Brown)
    The top RB was OUT(Bergeron)
    Fozzy went OUT
Case, after a long thread of him needing to get his "chance" got to show why he doesn't need another "chance" to prove that he is not the answer.
O line problems are still an issue, which you figure could be the result of youth. Some of you need to find something else to gripe about. This is getting old. [IMG]

My recollections may be wrong, but neither VY nor McCoy played as true frosh. They both redshirted. Moreover, VY split time with Mock, and his passing was, shall we say, erratic. He had more INTs than TDs. He was a better runner than Ash, however, and really contributed in that area.

McCoy was obviously better as a RS frosh than Ash has been as a true frosh, but he was a year older and had a better supporting cast. Ash has a true frosh LT (ridiculously rare, and an indictment of our OL recruiting), another RS frish and two soph OL starters, his best RBs and WRs are all true frosh (and all out injured), and does not have a legit receiving threat at TE (Irby is a shadow of his former self).

All of that said, he clealy has not taken the job by storm nor had a frosh campaign for the ages. His inability to hit open receivers is a dissappointment. The real shame is we apparently did not recruit a better player between McCoy and Ash 6 years later.

I have to say that I agree to one thing that is said above. HPS needs to stop going back to GD.

A lot of people agrees with you, HPS. So just drop mentioning it. It's ok if you give GD as the reason for many of the problems (and he is a big reason), but more importantly, we want to know what we can do NOW.

I saw that you had the last post here right now, and actually came looking to see if you had some good thoughts on where Ash is going, or if you see more positives or negatives in him than us, from the standpoint of somebody who knows football so well.

Instead, I find another GD discussion [IMG] ... Please, tell us some of the good stuff you know. And you know a lot. I think you are wasting your time arguing with the precious few left here who even want to think of GD. We want to just forget that chapter and see what do we do from here on.

Is the all-world recruit from next year the answer, or is there any hope at all in Ash? Can his passing accuracy (and the feel for passing) improve? Do we see things that scream out that it won't improve, or is it just a "true freshman - needs time" stituation?

    R.J.
