With fall out from the Penn State scandal still unknown, and how badly it will hurt Penn State athletics, and with OSU in the NCAA doghouse for football and losing scholarships, the B1G could soon be in serious sewage with its football TV contracts. At the worst case Penn State does the honorable thing and kills its football program for a year or two and does a complete house cleaning. Even without this drastic step PSU football could be seriously hurt. I think that puts Notre Dame in a very strong position in its negotiations with B1G. Particularly if B1G gets desperate and has no choice but to make concessions to Notre Dame. Man I wish Texas hadn't signed over its TV rights to the Big-12 for 6 years just yet, because Texas too could have been in pretty good position for the B1G. I think the odds to Notre Dame ever joining the Big-12 in any sport just went down significantly.
I'm not so sure. Given the nature of the scandal at Penn State, Notre Dame may want to stay away from the Big Ten for a little while, giving another conference (i.e.- the Big 12) a chance to jump into the mix.
My first thought regarding the B1G without PSU was that Mizzou is probably kicking itself for not delaying a decision for awhile longer.
I think I lean toward TGG on this one. The B1G is tarnished, not embellished, with the PSU scandal. Besides, what kind of concessions can the B1G make with respect to ND's television independence? Enough to join? While they may or may not be in the majority, there is a very definite ND core that absolutely despises the B1G.
I just don't see Penn State killing their football program. How would they fund all their money-losing sports programs? Now, if the new rumor about Sandusky is true (i.e., that Sandusky pimped young boys out to PSU donors), well that's a whole other matter. Under that scenario, I could see the PSU football program in deep water.
where did you read/hear about sandusky's pimping? that is ridiculous. how are people like that in positions of influence/power to begin with? and the donors--how did they get to where they are? disgusting the world we live in sometimes. skc
I don't see the football program being torpedoed. A&M killed 12 students on-campus thru negligence, and all they did was move Bonfire off-campus. Can't recall if any big name administrators lost their job over that either. What's needed is a heavy dose of perspective with this sport. Just like when Aggie students booed the outcome of the State report, and verbally attacked the parents of the kids who were killed when they tried to sue the university...Penn state student friggin rioted when there coach was fired. I pray that nothing like this ever happens at UT. But if it ever does, I hope to god we don't act like a bunch of douchebag fans.
I personally don't see a single grain of truth to the pimping boys to donors story, but the Huffington Post thinks so. I haven't seen the story anywhere else, so that says volumes.
If Notre Dame joins the Conference, it will be the same relationship they have w/the Big East now - everything but football. They'd be a great add, but night/day with/without football.
