Speaking of idiots- do you know anything about MF Global and what happened? Corzine's fund made very bad investments in EU securities and debt. They lost lots of client money. Their clients were primarily other institutions, funds and wealthy individuals- not the 99% as you noted. However, I believe around $15MM has not been located when refunding the remaining capital to these institutions. The moral of the story is- Corzine and his partners are lousy investors. Rich people lost the money of other rich people and funds. $15MM is unfound at the moment- could be anyone in the fund responsible, a crook or really bad accountants. No info is available yet. Corzine is also not exactly the DNC chairman- he is a former politician. His ties to Obama only exist for those who wish they did.
Not sure about Corzine's direct ties to Obama but agree with Mcbrett in that this isn't really a political story other than Corzine was a former Democratic politician as US senator and governor of NJ. This story is about Corzine being a moron. There is a reason he was ousted from Goldman Sachs' top spot in favor of Hank Paulson, who is not a moron.
brett, maybe you didn't see the Reuters article today, but it mentions a larger figure than $15M--saying closer to $1.5 Billion in unaccounted for funds, some of which CFTC regulators claim may have been diverted from customer accounts back into broker-dealer accounts of the firm to cover liquidity issues. I'm not of the mind that Obama was implicit with Corzine on any illicit transactions, just find it odd that he's not doing more to distance himself from this mess. Corzine sounds less like an idiot, more like he ran a loose ship that didn't police it's own institution.
How laughable is this... 1. yes, being that i am in the trading business, I have clients who had money frozen by this both here and in Germany. No one really knows what happened yet, but we do know that MF Global employees are now accusing Crorzine of dozens of felonies. 2. There is a huge tie between Corzine and Obama. After he left office, he became one of Obama top fundraisers. He freaking had investmens tied to possible White House appointments by Obama. No, no tie here at all. he was being looked at by Obama to be the next Sec of the Treasury for Pete's Sake. I honestly wasn't even aware that a brokerage firm could expropriate customers' money to gamble with it. How does that work? If the gamble had paid off and the money was put back in would anybody have ever known?
I think this case points out the need for government regulation and enforcement. I don't think government should make rules so complex that you have to pay lawyers $100,000 to build a Carl's Junior. However, i also think that the government should not allow rich big wheels on wall street make big gambles where they are the ones in line to reap billions while shifting the downside risk to taxpayers or someone who has a $30K investment account. I listened on NPR to a rancher last night talking about how he had a $30k account there that he used to lock in a price on sales of his wheat this year -- the very opposite of gambling. The real travesty here is that people with hundreds of millions in personal assets were making big gambles didn't put their personal wealth at stake and they STOLE money (i think "lost track" is too nice a term for it) to cover the margins when the deals went south. You don't think Mr. Corzine would have given an unexpected bonus to the trusting souls who put money in his firm if somehow he came out ahead after meeting his margin calls. I could care less what his politcal party is. The thing I hate to see in this country is people who have to put in a lot of damned hard work to make their money getting fleeced by people who have to put out considerably less sweat to bank hundreds of millions.
