Looks like DFW might not be as interested in the SEC as aggy thought: Link Typical ag response to a new series, strong at first then dwindling as the losses mount.
but, but, this was to be the mother of all rivalries, a money tree planted in brand new Jerry Jones Stadium. It was to over shadow the RRR played in the old Cotton Bowl with no bath rooms. WHAT HAPPEN?
So A&M entered a 10-year deal with Arkansas to play in Jerry World, has gone 0-3 against the Razorbacks so far, and has made less than the $5 million per year which Bill Byrne predicted. Now, having moved to the SEC (where they're confident they will make more money than in the Big 12), the Aggies want to switch to a home-and-home series even though Bobby Petrino and the Arkansas AD want to continue in Dallas. What about the 10-year contract, will A&M have to pay any penalties for breaking/cancelling it? Perhaps A&M's "100-year decision" to join the SEC goes more smoothly than their 10-year commitment [to play Arkansas] at Jerry World. Low A&M-Arkansas game revenue threatens DFW matchup
The Hogs want that game every year in Texas for recruiting. Aggy will learn this soon, because this is the reason they were allowed into the SEC. All those teams want to recruit in Texas.
Remember, the Pigs created the opening in their schedule for the inaugural A&M-Arky game at Jerry World by backing out of their home game in the non-conference home-and-home series with us. Shortly after we beat them 52-10 in Austin. Probably not apropos of anything, but I just like remembering that fact.
What I have read is Arky coach Petrino wants it to be a home and home and Byrne wants to continue it in Dallas. Either way, it is a lose lose for both teams. A home game every other year is worth more money. Maybe they should look at the less expensive Cotton Bowl.
aggy needs to learn a lot about business (especially Rule 1 - when doing business with Jerry Jones, the only person who is going to make money is Jerry Jones). They need to talk to LSU about an annual game in Houston. LSU might bring in some sponsorship money, but also LSU would be showcasing for recruiting purposes.
Arkansas wants to keep playing in Dallas. A&M has trouble selling their alotment of tickets. Hogs have outdrawn them bad the last 2 years. Aggies are also butthurt about going 0-3 in Jerryworld. Petrino and AD Jeff Long have stated very publicly they want to continue in Dallas. A&M has stated publicly they want home and home.
Watching the Purdue/Western Michigan game today (some 5th-tier bowl, don't know which one). ESPN had a blurb that aggy is the one that wants out of the game. Their excuse? Apparently the SEC has a rule that in conference games at a neutral site, neither team can host recruits.
wow, I thought this game had surpassed TEXAS/ou as THE PIVOTAL RIVALRY GAME of COLLEGE FOOTBALL...this comes as a huge shock to me...
Joe, Tickets to the Texas/OU game are higher face price than that, and are easily re-sold for upwards of $200 each for end zone seating. There is not an empty seat in the house, ever. Parking may not be $30 but it isn't free either, and beers at the State Fair aren't exactly cheap. My point is, there is simply more interest (from both sides) in the Texas/OU game than aggy can muster up for Arky. If you guys don't puss out and quit after a measly 3 years of ugly losses, you may find that eventually a deeper level of interest in playing a neutral site game develops in your fanbase, and the Piggie game might just become an annual highlight for you. I can't believe I have to say this to an aggie, but it takes time to develop a tradition.
A&M/arkie in louisiana makes no sense. and i have no urge to go back to the independence bowl. the 2009 game against georgia was a terrible experience. then again, damn near every bowl i've been to in my life time has been a terrible experience.
Joe, did you go to the snow bowl v. Miss. State a few years ago? That had to be near the top of sucky weather experiences for a game.
i did. and it was terrible. not ashamed to say that i left that one early and watched it back at the hotel.
