There is a SPOILER IN THE LINK!

If you've seen the series or read the book, no worries and the article is interesting. Otherwise, the piece reveals an important development late in the series and the first book.

Thanks for posting the link, BIG ESS FRO. I watched the HBO series and then all but the last of the books. Great stuff.

I'm torn between reading the books ahead of time or watching the HBO series first. I watched season 1 and am now reading the book. What did y'all do?

I'd never heard of the books. I saw a few episodes on HBO when I was at my father's house helping him after a surgery.

At Costco last summer they had the first four books on sale for $20: probably the best bang for my entertainment dollar ever.

As to your question, I think I benefited from watching the series or at least most of the episodes. There are a great many characters and it was nice to have a visual idea of who they were as I plunged into the books.

Game of Thrones matches the series pretty closely, so there are not a great many surprises when you read the book. Still, it was a fun read.

Bottom line: Maybe watch the first 4 episodes or so and then start the books. That way you still get the surprises. Harris is very good at unexpected plot twists.

I look forward to seeing how the series plays against the books. However, reading the books is a richer experience.

Can I be anymore long winded?

Ever since the opening scene of the the 1st episode of the season 1, I have been wondering what the White Walkers are?

Hope they are revealed in season 2.

Im surprised that curiosity didnt get the better of you like it did me. I had to know what happened. Further, I was so concerned about bumping into a spoiler that I plowed through them in a fee months. Definitly glad I did.

As to the walkers, there is no definitive answer yet. They are simply this universe's boogeyman. Demons of the night and presumably makers of wights...the zombies. Whether they are the captains (so to speak) of some greater evil, or the greatest evil in the land is unknown up through Dances.

I can't wait. I hear they are making a game too, but no way it will compare to Skyrim.

Its been awhile, but I am still surprised they killed off Ned Stark -- I assumed this guy would be one of the main characters going forward (obviously I didnt read the series). The fact that any character can die makes for an interesting show. Breaking television formula. I like it.

It wasnt the show that did the deed but the book, and is the event that essentially triggers the events for the next book, A Clash of Kings, and sets up the rest of the series. It may, look like Brans fall was that event, but things could reconciled and peace made up to that moment.

Lol, he's saying that even Bran's fall could have been reconciled. However, the execution of Ned Stark could not be and it is the "trigger" of what is to come in season/book 2.

The great thing about Game of Thrones is you think you have a handle on where things are heading, and then Martin throws something you could have never guessed which changes the entire direction of the series. I have never seen a book/movie/TV show do it so often and so effectively. It makes things far more suspenseful and entertaining. You don't really know if things will work out for the good guy in the end.

How many differences are there between the book and movie? Thus far I have only spotted three
1 The hooker chick from the show isn't in the book
2 related note...the awesome chick on chick scene isn't in the book
3 the aforementioned tyrion perspective from the battle is different in the book

For the most part, they are minor, and the Tyrion no battle scene was probably the most glaring. There are some character deletions, and a few scenes added to portray a sense of a character noted in the book that would have been more cumbersome otherwise on screen.

This should keep you busy for a while:

I just got the last book from Amazon. I am embarrassingly pumped about it.

As for the Tyrion battle scenes in the book, I don't think they would be believable on screen. I think it was a wise production choice.

That particular character who is shown to be gay in the show is more like tom cruise in the books. He leads a straight life, but there are comments aplenty from those who know him referring to his lack of interest in women.

I feel more optimistic the books can be made into television than I did last Fall. The latter books moved very slowly for me, but there was so much material surely the producers can condense and thereby speed it up for television.

There is strong speculation that the last 2 books will be woven together as its the only thing that makes sense to mere mortals. DB is fairly bad *** tho, so who knows what he comes up with. My guess is that they will be broken into 2 seasons.

The trailers that have come out have me so ready for the show to resume. I like the 3 horn blasts in the trailer in the OP - very ominous. Three horns means....

From the show perspective, they are going to have a hard time keeping the kids looking young. If they are going to take a couple of years to get through the books that are already out, Arya, Bran, etc are going to age out pretty quickly.

Potential spoilers below (I have read through Book 4):

Also, I hope they can either bring Sean Bean back to do some flashbacks or they already shot some of those scenes. I would love to see them show Ned & Co. going up against the 3 Kingsguard knights where only Ned and Howland Reed survive.

Rumors are that they are going to cut Jojen & Meera Reed from the show. I hope that is not the case because I have a feeling they (or their dad) can provide a lot of backstory - particularly around Jon Snow's mom (my guess - he is actually the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen).
