This is sick and perverted. A school wants its best donors and alums to die.

And you expected more? They need to money to get a leg up on OU. I know they beat 'em last year, but that doesnt happen very often. These people are just as obsessed with OU as aggy was(is) with us. They just dont do the goofy ****. I lived up there too long. They're nuts!!!

Meanwhile, the cats over at UTIMCO bought hard gold and made a TON of $$$ for Texas.

The rich (and smart) just get richer.

    We ARE the Joneses.

Why did they think it was going to work? Insurance companies aren't in business to lose money. The premiums would presumably add up to more than the payouts. This is like going into a casino and suing when you didn't win at roulette.

The only thing that could make this any funnier would be if Joe Jamail somehow sold them the policies.

Hey, UT is not as bad, but I recieved a request in the mail last week asking me to put UT in my will so I can give part of my estate to UT. If I did put UT, then UT would also be waiting for me to die.

    Ivan,

Did UT say it would pay your premium and be the sole beneficiary??

There's a huge difference between leaving an estate to a party in your will versus buying life insurance policies on old folks. One is commonplace, and the other is a twisted form of gambling with huge risk/return.

It doesn't really matter for OK State in the long run. They might be responsible for the $33 million in premiums, but T. Boone will die within about 10 years anyhow and leave them close to $1 billion. Drop in the bucket.

I don't care for the ides of my alma mater asking for my money when I die. Ask me for money now and quit acting like a grave robber. It is a classless, tasteless move by UT.
Different from what OSU did, but still waiting on alumni to die to get money. Classless.

i dont think it's classless. the purpose/role of fundraising folks is to cultivate a relationship that makes someone want to donate, then facilitate conversations about options related to how they can donate. i doubt that UT development (or any development folks) are saying "so when you finally die, we can has your moneys?", but rather they likely wait for the donor to bring up the possibility, then talk them through what it might look like.

if people want to donate that way, what's wrong with it? completely and totally different from the death lottery that okie state was trying to win.

A lot of non-profits do the same thing, providing an expedited way for people to bequest money or set up an annuity on their death for people that feel a cause is worthy. Ducks Unlimited, for example.

I'm on the board for a non-profit, and we have had several people that have bequested donations to us from their estate. They were donors in their lifetime. And while we didn't solicit their bequests, we are considering whether or not to make estate planning information available to those that might feel so inclined.

I think most people, especially very successful and wealthy people, find comfort in leaving a legacy. Something that keeps shaping the world in a way meaningful to them after their death. So I don't think UT was being out of line, they fund a lot of their schools and programs through donations, and these turn out men and women that make our world a better place. If my family was taken care of, and it became a question of what else do I want to do with this money, I can think of a lot worse destinations.

    Maybe their message needs refinement?

Prop Joe, UT has solicited my death money. I took the solicitation pretty much how you said it. "Can we has you money when you dead???" But I have to admit you made me spew coffee when I read your post!! That was funny, but yeah, UT has mailed me literature asking to be remembered( in the estate planning).
It is classless. I along with any other alums do not have to be asked to leave something to the University as most of us plan to anyway.

It is not classless. There are numerous environmental groups that do the same thing. The Nature Conservancy is one, for example. You can leave land or an estate to them and stipulate that it will be preserved as wildlife habitat, if suitable.
Some people don't really have heirs, and they may want to leave part or all of their estate to their favorite charity, university, or cause.
That's a lot different than buying a life insurance policy on a bunch of elderly athletic booters by a university. Seems crazy. Okie State lost $33 million on that deal. Think DeLoss Dodds would do something that dumb? No way.
