I need some suggestions for meaningful country songs from y'all. My current ipod list: "She Calls me Raymond" by Brett Eldredge (I'm a grown man, but this songs tears me up always!) - It's about a hospice worker who takes care of a senior lady suffering from alzheimer's, and thinks he's her son "Amelia" by Straw Dogs (not pure country but country/rock) "Traded her love" by Straw Dogs "Unanswered Prayers" by Garth Brooks "Cowgirls don't cry" by Brooks & Dunn I've got a few other I can't remember. Any others in the same class as the ones above? TIA!
George Jones - She Thinks I Still Care George Jones A DEAR JOHN LETTER ~ Jean Shepard & Ferlin Husky My man Ferlin. On The Wings Of A Snow White Dove is another great emotional song by him. Faron Young - Hello Walls. o hai, walls The Statler Brothers - I'll Go To My Grave Loving You Statler Bros. As you can tell my taste in Country music is old school. Hope you like and recall these as a jump off point to what you seek.
You can't go wrong with "Cruel Lips" by Graham Parker (with Lucinda Williams) or (if you dig "progressive" or alt-country) "You Were Born to Be in Battle" by the Old 97s: The Link and The Link
Oh man, I still have my Dad with me and hope to for a long time but boy, "that's my job" made me cry! Thank you, thank you for sharing it! I looove Lucinda! How the heck could I not have her on my ipod?! And loopy, those songs bringns back memories!
If "That's My Job" made you cry, you'll bawl when you listen to "The Walk" by Sawyer Brown "Where Have you Been" by Kathy Matea is a tear jerker. I don't know the title or artist, but there is a song I heard a few times on the radio and if you google search something like 'because I was her baby' you'll probably find it...being something of the black sheep in my family really makes that song hit home.
Saw The Statler Brothers mentioned, and it reminded me of "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories" ...about a woman who loses her husband in war while pregnant with the singer of the song.
Little Rock And I'll have to try and rewatch that Raymond video later. I think someone's cutting onions near me.
Gonna try to not repeat anything....just my opinion of "meaningful songs"....so, here goes (no particular order): Brooks & Dunn - Believe Kenny Rogers - The Greatest Kenny Chesney - There Goes My Life Rascal Flatts - Here Comes Goodbye Willie Nelson - My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys Lee Brice - I Drive Your Truck Tim McGraw - Don't Take The Girl Tim McGraw - Live Like You Were Dying Brad Paisley - Whiskey Lullaby Alan Jackson - So You Don't Have To Love Me Anymore Blake Shelton - Goodbye Time Brad Paisley - He Didn't Have To Be Craig Morgan - Almost Home Dwight Yoakam - The Heart That You Own Eli Young Band - I Love You Gary Allan - Smoke Rings In The Dark Keith Gattis - El Cerrito Place Randy Houser - Anything Goes Rascal Flatts - Bless The Broken Road Trace Adkins - I Can't Outrun You Randy Travis - Three Wooden Crosses Diamond Rio - One More Day Lee Brice - More Than A Memory
in my head recently, "I'm No Stranger to the Rain"--Keith Whitley "The Man Comes Around"-- Johnny Cash-one of his last songs written before his death. Almost like he could taste his departure in that song. "These Arms"-- Dwight Y. Simple lyrics. Where/when did country music take a wrong turn?
He Stopped Loving Her Today -- George Jones. You Couldn't Get the Picture -- George Jones. An ex-gf broke up with me in college by putting a CD with this song on it on my truck. While I was sad she was gone, I loved the song. Best gift she ever gave me.
"Angel Flight" by Radney Foster Darden Smith and Radney Foster talking about how they wrote the song (with a guest appearance by backup vocalist Darius Rucker)
Trying to add a couple that have not been listed: Johnny Cash channeling his inner Trent Reznor in "Hurt": The Link hate to do this, but actually good. Toby Keith before he became a fat idiot: "Who's That Man" The Link "Long Black Veil" -- lots of versions. Two favs: Cash :The Link The Band :The Link
Not a country music buff, but love: Down that Dusty Road - Robert Earl Keen Feeling Good Again - also REK __________________________________
"Between Heaven and earth, you're never alone, on the angel flight, come one brother I'm taking you home" - Radney Foster is awesome! And red river 44 soldiers!
There's a lot of emotion where folk meets country. For example Joan Baez's Diamonds and RustThe Link I liked her version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down though a lot of folks like the original performed by The Band. Personally I think Levon Helm sang it with too much emotion. The lyrics were touching enough and Baez's understated performance touched me more deeply. Johnny Cash could really tell a story. My favorite of his is Folsom Prison Blues, followed closely by Understand Your Man.
I predict this WILL be a #1 hit. Luke Bryan... You don't know Jack. It will likely follow his song... DRUNK ON YOU. The Link
