A looming tug of war over future presidential strategy? Or more like a catfight between a rigid absolutist mom and an equally stubborn and intransigent 14-year-old daughter? Only time will tell.

On the one hand, Meagan McCain is stating that the GOP must evolve and moderate its stance on abortion on LGBT issues - (if it wants to have any hope of winning presidential elections, that is)

Of course, there's no guarantee that the GOP can still win presidential elections even if it has a good turnout by evangelical voters::

Apart from the ad hominem attack, discuss the merits of her viewpoint. Do you agree with her or with Jeffress?

I've said it before, I'll keep saying it: the GOP needs to kick creeps like Jeffress and all the other creationist idiots out of the party. Same with the anti-gay bigots. Let these evangelicos start their own party. Get the hell out of the GOP. You've damn near ruined it. Find your rock and crawl back under it.

Apologies I didn't even read past the McCain quote. I just googled Jeffress and the guy is an asshat.

But if you're saying that either one of these people speak for the GOP, then you're mistaken.

Completely agree with McCain. Fat chance evangelicals vote Dems over GOP - ever. Social issues of the day quite frankly mean little to me or anyone not gay. As a conservative Christian I only care about the economy and our fiscal health and not starting wars. It's extremely simple. I would imagine that 75% of GOPers agree with me. And the other 25% aren't going to vote against me. Screw em.

I'm not a big fan of either one of these folks. Meghan McCain's a spoiled diva who thinks she's smarter than she is. (Just look at the sloppy grammar in her article. I've written better stuff after drinking a six-pack of beer.) Jeffress is a Southern Baptist preacher, and so my issues with him are self-explanatory, especially after my beer comment.

However, there's an element of truth to what both of them are saying. Those who say "ditch the social conservatives" are idiots. That truly would destroy the Party. It wouldn't have a base anymore. It would be like telling Democrats to drop union voters and black voters.

Furthermore, we should also be catering to Hispanics. Telling them you're going to ditch social conservatism to try to lure in a handful of smug, God-hating white people isn't a smart strategy. Furthermore, I don't think the GOP has to completely abandon the pro-life cause to get people who are more moderate on abortion. Certainly most pro-choice people I know don't like abortion, and they understand that there's a moral issue at play that isn't at play when you get a mole removed. They're pro-choice because they don't like a rigid, no-abortions-at-anytime view some members of the pro-life community often take.

Having said that, I agree with McCain that there needs to be a focus-shifting on abortion. There needs to be more focus on letting states decide the issue and less focus on a constitutional amendment banning abortion. That's a non-starter, and it's contrary to our basic system of federalism. To the extent pro-lifers are going to push the issue to the national level. they need to get a hell of lot more disciplined in discussing their position. Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock should never have been allowed to spew ******** like they did.

As for gay marriage, drop it. We're losing, and even if we weren't losing, the federal courts are going to force us to lose. Just drop the issue.

I hardly think it's appropriate to describe the search for a winning electoral strategy as "soul searching". As if opting for what will win is a more soulful alternative than opting for what you truly believe in.

Soul selling, perhaps. But not soul searching.
