""There are things the president can do, and we'll be expecting that leadership from President Obama," AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka told reporters after the election.and But unions are also pressing for new measures that might help boost their sagging membership rolls. New investment in infrastructure would bring construction jobs for trade unions. Immigration reform - and a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented Latino immigrants - would create a vast new pool of potential union members. And new regulations could remove some obstacles to union organizing. "A new rule expected from the Labor Department would force companies to reveal relationships with so-called union-busting consulting companies even if the companies have no contact with workers. The National Labor Relations Board is expected to start work on a rule that would force businesses to turn over workers' phone numbers, emails and shift times to union organizers. The Link
For conservatives this kind of gov't intrusion boggles the mind I would guess it would drive libertarians crazy. I am surprised the professed libertarians on WM haven't weighed in on this abuse freedoms by the BO admin
NJ I agree with this The employees should be allowed to decide for themselves whether to organize" which should include whether to give out information to unions. If the employee wants to give that information out they can. What if I as an employee don't want all that information given out?
NJ UH Were you aware of this? starting in late 2011 “The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has finalized its administrative rule requiring all employers within its jurisdiction to post notices informing employees of their rights to join a union free of threats and intimidation by the employer. The advance notice of the finalized rule has been published on the internet and the anticipated publication date of the final rule in the Federal Register is August 30, 2011. The rule is scheduled to take effect 75 days after its publication in the Federal Register. and “In addition to physical posting at ‘conspicuous places…readily seen by employees, including all places where notices to employees are customarily posted,’ any employer that ‘customarily communicates’ via intranet or internet with its employees as to ‘personnel rules or policies’ must display an exact copy of the Notice on such site(s), or a link to the NLRB’s web site which reads, ‘Employee Rights under the National Labor Relations Act.’” Maybe BO would make his union bosses happier by just forcing people to join unions.
Good grief, Horn, now you have given BO an idea. I think that could be done by Executive Order to bypass that pesky Congress. As someone who is starting to get the SS that I paid into, I think all retirees should be able to start a union ( no, not AARP) to bargain for higher monthly benefits.
AB I'd like to take the credit ( blame) for that but did you see the picture of BO with Trumka and a Moveon executive at the WH 3 days after election? Think it is any coincidence that Moveon and unions are staging the Walmart protests Friday? No the community marxist is one step ahead.
NJ?? Read again the quote you posted and show us wehre in that posting it limits it to a union already in place at the company? does it not say "A " union? Why would you interpret that to mean only the union already operating in that company?
A poster saying "you have a right to join a union" doesn't do anything for employees of a company that doesn't have a union. If there is an active effort to form a union for such a company, I see no harm in making sure that all employees know about the effort and get relevant information so that they can make an informed judgment about whether to join.
NJ so the employer posts in public places where all employees can read that the employee has a right to join a union with no hassle from the employer and you think the employer isn't doing enough? You think the employee needs more help from the employer? It doesn't seem like you have any confidence the employee is smart enough to figure it out? You may be right.
No company should be required to post nor give out union information. If the union wants them they'll get them.
"I don't know enough about either of these issues to form a firm opinion" If you are going to take that attitude you're just going to have to find yourself another place to post.
I'm not suggesting that companies should be required to give away the house, like a casino would be doing by disclosing what card is next. I'm just asking that companies be required to compete on a level playing field. A slightly better (although still weak) analogy would be that it is akin to requiring the casino to disclose the distribution of cards in the deck. Yes, the union organizers are allowed to distribute information to potential members. But that is easier said than done when they don't have contact information for the potential members.
